"and so the end is near, and now we face the final curtain ..."

Twenty-four hours left to the first round. Who will be the two? Hopefully the terminally embittered will find solice and stop carrying on as the hopelessly clueless. This blog was started as an exchange of important information and ideas. What we have wound up with is an anonymous way to insult your neighbor. Beam me up Scotty ....

Republican Mom my butt. You don't know anymore than the "drive-by media" tells you. The emails that were sent broke no laws and noone was threatened. Let the investigation take place and let the chips fall whereever. You are just a little too trigger happy here without the facts. All the Speaker had were a few emails not the instant messages. And, it appears those may be false.

thanks anon thats very interesting news there. we wonder what spanky thinks about this? does anyone else know what this is about? is it for the payment for their "legal services" from the Special City Council meeting on Monday, September 25, 2006 at 11:30 A.M?

I could give a shit what Ned and Debra think. Ned Randolph is no God in my book. He has been nothing but a figurehead, who exercised little leadersip, for the past many years. Most of the time he was an absente mayor. As far as a lawyer, he spent almost his entire life in politics. So you are right, there is really no comparison between Jacques and Ned. Jacques is serveral notches above Ned.

We,

I suspect thats exactly what its for. This ordinance was introduced by Mr. Sanders on the Tuesday following the meeting with Mr. Hamilton. Right now it is on the "consent calendar" for final approval this Tuesday. Items placed on the consent calendar typically do not get discussed in committee prior to the Council meetings.

how can we find out how much they: Breazeale, Sasche & Wilson and Leo C. Hamilton are gonna get paid? and will their invoice be available for public inspection?

Anonymous said...

If Breazeal et al. are hired for ongoing litigation, their invoices, detailing what they did, may not be a public record until after that litigation is over. However, if they enter into a contract with the City detailing their hourly rates, that would be a public record. Also, try looking at at the minutes, if not a closed session, and see if the hourly rate or flat fee amount is discussed.

It should be an ordinance to pay the firm. I think I shook up the clerk when I called to find out about the ordinance and the final bullshit answer was that they were going to pass a resolution to pay the firm so I guess they figured I was going to give them hell if they did not follow procedure. At the next meeeting, folks can show up to protest the expense since it was proper for a citizen or a candidate to incur the expense to challenge the district maps. The city should approve the expenditure first before they incur the expense. They are actually trying to legitimize an illegitimate procedure, which is cause for removal also. If enough of you show up to protest the payment, they might have to table it and fork over the fee out of their pockets which would only be right and quite amusing.

Referring to a previous question I asked about utility billing. I am at a loss to understand how the La Convention center amassed a bill for $78,000 which by liberal estimates would have to be at least three months arrearage and more if the monthly charges were less. Bankruptcy protection does not extend to recurring expenses such as utilities so that is not a reason. There are two possibilities that could lead to this diversion from policy and they would be, (1) poor management or (2) policy overide. So, who done it?

Anonymous said...

Spanky,

Here's what I know about the LA Convention Center. Right after the current owners bought the hotel/center, Hampton Inn, their flag, essentially increased their standards and told ownership the hotel needed an additional 1.3 million in improvements to qualify as a Hampton Inn. The owners were unable to qualify for the loan, and they lost their flag. Although the convention business remained steady, the hotel business became terrible., and the group had to file for bankruptcy.

The story just hasn't been told correctly. They didn't fire these people because of their outstanding utility bills. They fired them because they hotel went under.

I think it's on the market for a cool $6.5 million.

By in large, attorneys make lousy businessmen. In just about every medium to large firm you will find a “business manager” position occupied by a non-attorney. Smaller firms and lone wolves don’t have the resources to hire such an individual and suffer for it. That’s why you see so many of the “lone wolves” starving to death. They have no concept of money management.

Please don’t misunderstand, in order to function in the courtroom, attorneys must be trained to think and react in a very narrow scope. Usually the best attorneys are tunnel visioned into this way of thinking. However, we must acknowledge that the courtroom is NOT the boardroom.

Survey says…… In picking a Chief of Staff, Jacques would do well to pick a seasoned, accomplished, local businessman to be his administrative arm. Stay away from another attorney, and stay away from a C.P.A. Bean counters can be just as ineffective in management rolls as attorneys because the bean counters focus on only one aspect, they never see the big picture.

The feathers and bones have spoken…

Anonymous said...

chief of staff is not a business manager, it is a policy maker and issue recognizer and a facilitator for the mayor's objectives. Many lawyers have a business education and background and are particularly skilled at recognizing, addressing, and solving problems. The business managers at large to medium law firms don't make financial decisions. They supervise personnel, payroll, collection and payment of expenses. They are usually hired so that you don't have a partner using billable hours to figure FICA or order toner for the copier. A law education and practice is a wonderful credential for the chief of staff position, though clearly not the only one. Here again, with a active functioning participating mayor, an attorney would make an excellent 2nd fiddle, particularly is the mayor is trained as and thinks like a lawyer.

Sooth likes to make up information then base his premise on it. That's OK for an alexandria blog but you dare not operate on that system of non-reason.

Anonymous said...

I agree that Sooth misses the boat in a number of ways. Lawyers are very accustomed to using experts to provide essential information and expertise in addressing a particular problem or set of problems. The Mayor and his Chief of Staff will hopefully be big picture guys and use experts to guide their way and to help make it happen.

I agree that Sooth's problem is that he is always willing to accept his own personal uninformed off-the-cuff opinion as the gospel. He gives himself way to much credit.

The main qualification for Jacques' chief of staff is loyalty and honesty. Our previous chiefs have had their own agenda (usually self-enrichment) and left their mayor in the dust.

Anonymous said...

On the Convention Center property et al - go back a few months and look through the classifieds - I seem to recall a Sheriff's Sale ad for a portion of the property being forced by Mrs. Hadnott. The new owners were not paying on the portion she "owner financed." These guys have been delinquent on just about everything.

Anonymous said...

Chief of Staff can mean many things. Depends on who is Mayor. Ned actually wanted a "city manager" but couldn't get our form of government changed. Funny - the Chamber of Commerce actually performed a study and endorsed what we have now. They seem to "control" a lot of things.

Anonymous said...

If you liked the Convention Center deal you'll love the Bently deal. I doubt there will be a press conference when the deal goes south or when we have to pick up the notes. I hope that now that the election is over and, as CFS said, the gang remained together, they will rethink the fast track stuff. The important thing is that we continue to fund David's & Moore's life style. How we do that doesn't matter.

Anonymous said...

Ok, let me refine the question. How does the city have a policy of disconnecting your utilities when they are approximately 10 days past due and yet there are businesses as we have recently observed that have gone well beyond that point and how many more are there? Some one had to provide the waiver or they were overlooked which I doubt. I am more concerned with the city's role and who is special and who is not. Are you special?

Anonymous said...

I'm special.

Anonymous said...

Let me address these claims by local attorneys one by one for clarity.

"chief of staff is not a business manager, it is a policy maker and issue recognizer and a facilitator for the mayor's objectives "

The previous statement is contradictory. The policy maker in any administration is the Chief Executive, in this case the Mayor. The Chief of Staff IS the facilitator and thus should not be an attorney accustomed to operating on a single stage.

"Many lawyers have a business education and background and are particularly skilled at recognizing, addressing, and solving problems..."

In my experience in the business world, 46 years of owning, operating, and profiting from an 18 million dollar a year company, I have never met an attorney who was "particularly skilled ay recognizing addressing and solving problems..." They gravitate to the arena they are most comfortable with, the court system. If the problem is a legal one they can recognize it...if not, they cannot see the forest for the trees. They are skilled at addressing legal problems, all others are beyond them, they have no frame of reference. Their only solution seems to be addressing the problem with threats and eventual litigation. This is not always the best course.

"The business managers at large to medium law firms don't make financial decisions. They supervise personnel, payroll, collection and payment of expenses…

This is true to an extent, however one must recognize that the Chief of Staff will not make financial decisions for COA either...the council will.

“They are usually hired so that you don't have a partner using billable hours to figure FICA or order toner for the copier...."

This statement is a perfect example of the limited vision of most attorneys. If the partner, or staff attorney were to expend their time addressing these tasks which are necessary rot the operation of the firm, they would indeed lose money. However he seems to relegate this position to one of minor importance. There is the short-sighted behavior I was describing earlier. ANY position within an organization which allows for the utilization of the organization’s resources for maximum profit IS VALUABLE. By the way, FICA ia a straight 1.45% of gross earnings in any payroll period. Even a lawyer can calculate this.

"Sooth likes to make up information then base his premise on it. That's OK for an Alexandria blog but you dare not operate on that system of non-reason...."

Not true, my opinion has been formed by a lifetime of operating, successfully, in the business arena. I would also venture to speculate that I have been in business longer than my detractors have been alive.

Survey says....any man who serves his own ego first will not serve the needs of Alexandria first. I believe that Jacques Roy has the temperament and heart to serve Alexandria first. Those who beat their chest and look to their own self-aggrandizement should be avoided at all costs.

Soothsayer is cybermasterbating again. He/she has not been embarrassed or subdued by failure to predict or understand our community dynamics this far.

He boast of his success, maturity, insight, and experience, with absolutely nothing but his questional word to go on.

He does not understand what lawyers do, how, or why, but, as in the past, doesn't hesitate to opine at great length.

Soothsayer = Blowhard

The good news is that Mr. Roy will make his choices to fill his top echelon without this blogs input.

Soothsayer jokes about relying on animal entrails for his information and inspiration and judging from its quality, it might very well be right. I am locking up my cat.

Anonymous said...

Surely Jaques is going to put an end to the countless lawyers representing different parts of the same government. The Charter does not say that the council should have its own lawyer to fight the mayors office. All this division and backstabbing must stop. One City attorney and two assistants. That's really all you need and all the law allows. There should be one governing body, not two.

The very fact that you own a cat says legions about your masculinity. But again, you take liberties with my words sir, so I will attempt to reason with the rabble once more…

My success is not boasting, rather the result of years of hard work, numerous mistakes, and persistence. You may call into question the veracity of my statements but this is of no matter to me, why should I care what you think…I don’t

As far as masturbation, cyber or otherwise, I’m past that point in my life. At my age sex is nothing more than a memory. Pleasant, but still just a memory. I prefer a good cigar and a smooth bourbon. They cost a lot less in the long run, and make absolutely no demands on you later.

I do understand lawyers, having dealt with them for more than 40 years. Perhaps as an attorney yourself, the reality of your profession makes you a bit uneasy. I am comfortable with the image I see every morning in the mirror…are you?

And, if by chance you are not an attorney, then it is you who speaks with no experience and authority, not me.

As to the farce of prediction via animal parts, it is a game Biff and I play, to inject a little levity into this blog. If this offends you…tough! Deal with it Junior…

The Mayor's Race (caucasion, by the way) is heating up. I understand that Roy has gathered a very impressive group of black ministers and leaders who have declared their support for him.

Brewer has the firm backing of Lou Howard and and the black dwarf with the Sams-attacking great danes which should potentially give them two black votes. There is talk of a reasoned withdrawal by Delores but certain desparate vested interests are impeding that line of consideration. I am told that the Roy campaign has put somebody to work just opening envelopes from former Brewer supporters. The main enthusiastic Brewer support and pressure to stay the course is coming from Albin and Roseanne. It looks like a really though fight.

Also in the wind is the rumour that Myron is trying to put together an army of black support for Delores but so far can't get a group any larger than the Temptations. Myron apparently has a thing for republicans now. Word is that he has been thrown off the democratic reservation.

uh, what was the question??

Anonymous said...

I hear that the Democrats have organized a little firing squad for Lawson next week. Seems that they finally have all they need to overcome his "pitifull negro" defense and are going to neutralize him to prevent future damage to the party. It would appear that generating an official party ballot that endorses a republican and excludes the democrat (even if it's an old rich republican) is over the line. It won't help Lampert or Hickman or Slatkin but it will help Jacques and Alexandria.

Wrong. Myron might not be bought but he is certainly rented by Albin Provosty. It's about keeping the gang together. If Brewer wins and the Provostys stay in charge, Myron's got big chops coming which will include protecting Kelvin and Bridget - his tennants and co-conspirators.

The minority population appears to have figured Myron and CFS out and if they can't deliver the black vote, Blanco and Landrieu ain't got any use for him. He will cry racism and get some traction but mostly he is found out and shot his waddddd.

Yes Jam should do well. He has been very careful on who he prosecutes, always keeping re-election as a consideration on whether or not to prosecute someone. A nightmare for Jam is having an influential accused with an influential victim. He usually winds up chasing his tail in such a situation

Anonymous said...

Has anyone seen Sams since the election?

Anonymous said...

I don't think that's fair. It's not that Sooth dislikes lawyers. It more a case of adoring himself so much that it is hard to accept the legal profession as being on a plain with used car dealers.

By the way, you can quote Churchill and still be a hick.

Anonymous said...

Albin is not stupid. Don't count him out. He knows Delores is finished but I guarantee he will land on his feet. I would suggest that Roy's keepers not succumb to the hundreds of new supporters' recommendations. I think Tommy and others will counsel him to resist the onslaught of "I wanna hep ya now guys." In fact, I think he should become very independent now, even from those who got him in the race. My suggestion, sit back, reevaluatate the situation, take a few days, and use the brain I think he has. and realize he is now the mayor. Don't take everything that those who got you in this race at face value. Just remember now, you are the mayor. Sit back, relax, and think about everything for a few days. Take control. If you don't, you will be a pawn for the rest of your political career. That is not what you want. Listen to the advice of your dad and all of your advisors, but don't fail to realize that you have a mind of your own, and a responsibility that your have never had before. Alexandria desperately needs you and I assure you will achieve much more by doing the best you can to provide what the taxpayers are paying for. Don't sell yourself out for even your family or friends. The pressure is there. When people contribute a quarter of mil. they want something in return. But you are the mayor and you can give them "good gov't" and tell them to kiss your ass. They have no where else to go, and you will increase you prestige and no one can touch you if you remain true to what you know you can do and to yourself and your wife and kids. Good luck and I'll be around to follow up on your progress.

Budget Deficit Drops to $250 Billion

The federal budget estimate for the fiscal year just completed dropped to $250 billion, congressional estimators said Friday, as the economy continues to fuel impressive tax revenues.
The Congressional Budget Office's latest estimate is $10 billion below CBO predictions issued in August and well below a July White House prediction of $296 billion.

The improving deficit picture _ Bush predicted a $423 billion deficit in his February budget _ has been driven by better-than-expected tax receipts, especially from corporate profits, CBO said.

The fact that you equate being gay with being a murderer, armed robber, alcoholic, or drug abuser really illustrates the extent of narrow-minded ignorance that embraces the christian right. Being gay in this century is neither a crime nor an illness.

Mr. Foley's moral defect is not that he is a queer but that he is a preditor. The republican problem is not that Foley is a fruit but that they protected and shielded him from discovery and responsibilty for his predation for their own selfish motives.
