ATTENTION CLASS

As I have watched the blogging on this site degrade from informative to "re-formative", I will now be monitoring content. If a post uses language that a normal individual would consider foul (you know what I mean) and racialy inciting I will delete it. This people is why nothing gets done in this town. Work together and move in the same direction -- cooperatively. No one has ever been won over by being insulted.

The content in this blog can put the most jaded journalist off, with that said, there are some interesting items and it is at times very entertaining. Of course, I want to take this opportunity to ask the bloggers here to attend the KALB-TV Meet the Candidates Mayoral Forum, Tuesday at the Coughlin Saunders Performing Arts Center. Doors open at 4:30. The more people there, the hotter the fire under what is now becoming a much more agressive political season.
By the way...your questions have been noted.

Thank goodness there is a forum like this so the truth can come out. I agree that the language and childish name calling has gotten a little bad, but some folks just feel passionately about the destruction that John Sams has caused in the Rapides Parish school system. To them, I say: RANT ON!

I would like to ask a question of all that contibute and view this blog. Does it appear to you that people in general have a greater level of interest in this mayors race than in the past? Is there much talk on the street about city politics?

Liberty or death said...

Free speech is essential for free people. Censorship is the cornerstone of every dictatorship and that which little minds hide behind. There is no word so immoral as the concept of censorship. George Carlin had seven words you could not say on TV. Are those not allowed on this site? Can one discuss fornication but not the euphamisms. Must I now call a redbug a Chigro? Will you just eleminate words or the whole posting. Are those who agee with you offered a chance to post their views and those who do not have to jump through hoops. You will not improve any community by denying the amendments of the constitution to its citizens. I assure the readers here that the great censor of this blog is far more evil and dangerous than any who have commented in a manner offensive to some. If you don't open this blog up to totally free exchanges of ideas tendered in any way one wishes then there is no hope of free discourse. Only a backwood, religiously repressive, conglomeration of ignorant uneducated, immoral, dishonest hicks could pander to one who would deny them their rights derived from the fact that the individual exists and needs absolute freedom to continue to do so. I hope that this is not the community that this site would have us become. How the framers of the Constitution would turning over in their graves to see what some would have done to their creation. If our freedoms are not restored I shall have to refuse to participate and I can assure you will find that the moral and intellectual honest commenters will flee one by one, until only the despoilers of liberty are left. I hope you come to your senses.

Spanky said...

Uh, there has been no censorship to date. Only a request to try to do more better and not use foul language as it is not really necessary to get a valid point across. Vulgarity is actually a turn-off to most folks and does not further the aim of this blog which is to stimulate conversation in the community. Lenny Bruce made the point long ago and it has been noted.

Spanky,

I do think there is a higher interest in politics right now...especially with the Mayor's race. I work for the city and people are asking me about it constantly. I know a lot about what has been happening at the city...a lot more than I probably need to know because I am around it all the time. But, I still think the average "man on the street" doesn't really understand whats at stake. I'm afraid that once they do figure it out it will be too late.

Scarlett said...

Good Lord. The rant on censorship took me back to my college days when those liberal professors tried to convince me that common decency was censorship. Are you also the type that thinks "Under God" should not be in the Pledge of Allegience? You guys really need to come up with some fresh ideas rather than repeating the same nonsense. However, I'm sure Dr. Sams would agree with you since he is so closely associated with the ACLU.

Spanky said...

It may seem like a dumb question, but I have only my experience to go by and it seems that a lot of people are getting stirred up. I just want them to get stirred up enough to participate. It is bad enough to get a poorly functioning government, but even worse is when 10-12% of the registered voters made it happen while the rest did not even vote. I will be at peace with whatever the results are as long as we have at least 65% voter turnout. Any less and I will hang my head in shame.

Spanky said...

Hey Scarlett

Scarlett said...

Oops!!! Sorry....that should have be Allegiance.

Scarlett said...

Spanky - If we were to get 65% of the vote out, there would be dancing in the streets. That won't happen until something really terrible happens. If things don't change, we could be headed there.

Anonymous said...

Did everyone get the Delores Brewer mail out today??

With all the consulting fees, you would think her information would be correct. (it isn't)

Spanky said...

Isn't that terrible that 65% turnout would be earth shattering? People wonder why government gets out of hand. Nobody ever connects the fact that all you have to do is satisfy the 10-12% segment of voters that constantly go to the polls and that is who makes the decisions. It is true that most officials represent a minority view, but that is who votes.

Liberty or death said...

Scarlet, when I was in the fifth grade, one day I said the pledge of allegiance and the next it was different. It had been changed to include "under God" so it was not the original intent to have it included. The reason was that this country was not designed for any group i.e. theists, atheists, agnostics,Catholics, Jews, Christians. Freedom of religion means religion is not essential in a free country but individuals are free to practice theirs however they wish. You are so quick to deny free speech so as not to offend, but you have no problem offending Buddist, atheists, Hinduist, Muslims and others who don't want to recite the Pledge without the addition to the original of a phrase that is offensive to some Americans who are just as moral as you. Hippocritical and contradctory don't you think? Individual rights that you enjoy will not be there if you so easily give them away. When you want everyone to speak as you wish and worship as you see fit, there may be someone with more power than you that can force you to speak as they wish and worship as they wish or not at all. Think about what you are saying or you may not be able to say anything. Also ad hominem attacks hold no weight with me. If you have logic to back up your statements, hit me with your best pitch, but I'm no liberal, Sam's supporter or ACLU advocate. Even if I were my statements are factual. No rant just the facts. The first amendment is a big deal.

Dr. Sams letter in the TT should clear up the matter of the ACLU. It again shows that he has the backbone to stand up for his convictions. He is blunt and plain spoken. I believe He will have the best interest in good government if He becomes Mayor. By the way, what was so great about Bolton since Jessie Doyle retired. I personally think that it has been helped by the changes.

Anonymous said...

Bolton helped by the changes? One of the most academically excellent shools, in both student performance and teacher qualification, has been gutted. Biff, I am still in a quandry about the mayor's race but in answer to your question about Delores' slick mailout - it is totally bogus. How, in God's name, is she going to "lock up the drug dealers". She promises to come down hard on the drug dealers, reduce car jackings and stop break-ins in our homes and businesses. What horse shit. She doesn't vow to take on autism or cervical cancer. She just doesn't have much substance. Listen to her at any of the forums (fora?) and you see how truly limited she really is. He lack of substance shows in her pandering mailout.

Yeah, Bolton's better off now...NOT. The scores will tell the tale very soon. And thank goodness theres an emphasis on sports now. Otherwise the humiliating loss of 49-0 at last night's game against Pineville would have been even worse.

Well dear, I have. Oh, don't get me wrong, I didn't call her, I cornered her at the Hotel Bentley "on the street" press conference.

I asked VERY specific questions and got VERY vague answers. Seems to me that without her handlers passing her the answers, Delores hasn't a clue.

Survey says... The longer this race goes on, the more Delores' veneer begins to wear off. She will never sit in the mayor's chair.

delores should not be your choice for three, it seems to me, obvious reasons. first and foremost, if you DON'T want change, delores is your candidate. she was annointed by ned's supporters for the very reason she won't bring about change. she has, what 16 years with the present administration, the same supporters as ned, and of all the candidates is most likely to maintain the status quo. the issue is simple. if you like what has been going on with the mayor's office and the council for the last few years, delores is your candidate. secondly, she has clearly demonstrated on tape a decided lack of candor. she got caught lying. it's pathetic that you can't even produce a lie that will get past bridgett brown. ned, on the insistance of his counsel in baton rouge, the next day admitted the BR lawyer meeting was planned and not happenstance, effectively cutting delores' legs out from under her. in her kalb interview she showed her contempt for the voter by lying about the lie and calling it a figure of speech. just how insulting is that? finally, and maybe foremost, brewer has no chance of getting any black vote in a run off, thereby losing the run for mayor. her openly strained relationships with the council and with blacks in general insures she can not get any cross over vote. bottom line on delores. if you like the present regime, you will love delores. end result, on the unlikely event she makes the run-off, she loses in that race. insightful biff.

Just because Bolton lost a football game should not be blamed on Dr. Sams. One story that I personally know about Sams is when the evacuees were at Bolton Gym from a metal hospital in Lake Charles sleeping on the floor Dr. Sams saw the situation and went to Security Sporting Store and bought all the air mattresses there out of his own pocket and brought them to Bolton without fanfare, that showed me what kind of man he is

In regard to the comments by anonymous re: Liberty or death's defense of the first amendment to the constitution, Love it or leave---doesn't leave much room for dissention, What that really means: if you don't like what I believe get out. Men could have said to women before they got the right to vote that they could like the U.S. like it was with no representation from women or just move to Canada. Hardly a well thought out answer to Liberty or deaths comments, but principles don't garner many well thought out comments on this site. Hitler could have done wonders with the malleable minds who shouts platitudes as if they were absolutes. Remember, when anyone's rights are denied, everyone's rights have been denied. You are right about the ACLU. They have been used much more to purge our justice system of the concept of individual rights than they have been used to preserve them. Scarlet's and your knee jerk response to the concept of individual libery is very similar to the ACLU's. However, you are either for freedom of speech or not, period. It is OK if you choose to endorse censorcism, but have the courage to admit it and not hide behind transparant patriotism. Oppose freedom of religion all you wish, but don't 'in the name of god" cloak yourself in moral sanctity in doing so. It takes courage to stand up for freedom which is what Liberty or death is attempting to do. There were times when folks like he or she were hanged for such beliefs.

Dear Liberty or Death,

I notice that the Constitution does not include any foul language and to my knowledge does not insult anyones race or creed. I am 100% assured that the gentlemen who worked together in creating this document did not use foul language in the heated debates that took place.

You asked about what would be deleted ... the whole posting. Anyone can allude to something without outright, inflamatory remarks.

Next comment: The use of the word God would be considered all encompassing. Christian,
Jew, Buddist, Hinduist, Muslim, all worship a God. Atheists have a right to beleive in what ever they want. If they don't want to say it they don't have to, but according to the First Amendment if I want to I am protected ... is this true?

Three teachers (Fortenberry, Self, Gourgues) and Mr. Goff led the iniatitive to get help for the patients in Bolton's gym and called together good people like Sister Mickey Mangun and the Red Cross. If Sams helped at all, it was not as you say.

Biff, you forgot the most important reason NOT to support Delores--her husband John Brewer. Totally obnoxious guy. I've heard that her high priced Florida campaign staff has had to tell her to reign him in several times. Even pisses off her volunteers. If he can't behave now, just think what he'd do if she got elected. Some folks around town don't think it would be a very good situation. He'd be demanding free stuff like tickets, etc. and saying obnoxious things to all kinds of people. She'd literally have to hide him at home--or perhaps certain meds would help him act appropriately.

Liberty or death said...

cenla antics. It is true that you have the right to censor your blog however you wish. I just think to do so always reduces the expression of free speech and may be more harmful than any thing anyone says under the protection of the constitution. And incidentally our founding fathers used profanity profusely, Franklin even wrote a book about farting. The problem with god and religion is that no government sponsored religion is allowed and thus we should have neither an atheist country or a theist country, but a country that is neutral in regards to religious beliefs. That was the intent of the founding fathers even though some were Christian, some were deist, some were atheist etc. Difference of opinion on whether it is a good idea to censor your site. What about letting us know what was censored and why so we can see basically what we are missing? When you start censoring, will it actually have an effect of opinions of the readers? Will it skew the mayors race by eleminating some candidates supporters? Don't know but it sure seems possible. This is your home and I don't want to deny you your property rights, but I think a home devoted to ideas would be happier without compromising any of the guests' comments. Thanks anyway for inviting me into you home and I will abide by your wishes. If you wish to throttle my pronouncements, you have the right to do so. It does seem that everyone on this site agrees that consorship to the degree you suggest is perfectly sensible. This will be an interesting experiment tried many times before in countries that became dictatorships. We'll see how it works within cenla antics. The camel's nose is in the tent.

Which camp do ya'll think will be the first to sling mud in the mainstream media? I keep hearing that things are about to get nasty. Gotta figure Sams and Roy are gonna pick on the DB, the frontrunner. Another question is, if they do, will she stay on the high road or kick 'em back?

Anonymous said...

I received the Brewer mail out, and I have three questions.

1. Before Delores landed the cushy job as a secretary with Ned, what was her work and educational experience?

2. I noticed that Mrs. Brewer's key issues seem to be lifted directly from things Mr. Roy has both written and spoken about in the mayoral forums. Are we to assume that these are her original ideas or that they are just issues her consultants picked out for her?

3. Mrs. Brewer claims to be about honesty. I'd like to know what's honest about lying to the City Council and then having the mayor correct your statement in an open letter to the public the next day. I want to know what's honest about refusing to admit that she had lied. Mrs. Brewer would have a lot more political capital, in my opinion, if she had come out and admitted that she lied. She didn't misspeak. For those of you interested, KALB probably has archived video footage. Mrs. Brewer lied about the nature of a meeting with two lawyers in Baton Rouge. If she's all about honesty in this campaign, I'd like for this issue to be addressed, once and for all.

People tried to count Kathleen Blanco out, too. Called her a lightweight. Said she would not get elected. She proved them wrong. So will Delores.

Isn't there a candidate that has some affiliation with these morons. Supporting them in anyway shape or form is just plain irresposible.

TOP TEN REASONS ON WHY NOT TO SUPPORT THE ACLU or ANYONE WHO HAS EVER SUPPORTED THE...

10. The ACLU was founded by Communist, with communist ideals, communist goals, and they continue to impose a Communist like agenda on America daily. The founder of the ACLU, Roger Baldwin stated clearly…

My chief aversion is the system of greed, private profit, privilege and violence which makes up the control of the world today, and which has brought it to the tragic crisis of unprecedented hunger and unemployment…Therefore, I am for Socialism, disarmament and ultimately, for the abolishing of the State itself…I seek the social ownership of property, the abolition of the propertied class and sole control of those who produce wealth. Communism is the goal.”

9. The ACLU does not believe in the Second Amendment.

ACLU POLICY “The ACLU agrees with the Supreme Court’s long-standing interpretation of the Second Amendment [as set forth in the 1939 case, U.S. v. Miller] that the individual’s right to bear arms applies only to the preservation or efficiency of a well-regulated militia. Except for lawful police and military purposes, the possession of weapons by individuals is not constitutionally protected. Therefore, there is no constitutional impediment to the regulation of firearms.”ACLU Policy #47

#8. Their outright hatred of the Boyscouts. They are currently doing everything in their power to hurt this organization. They attacked their free speech right to exclude gays, and are threatening schools, and fighting in court to get their charters shut down. The oppose the military supporting them, and will sue the pants off any school that attempts to charter them.

#7. The ACLU are pro-death. Not only is the ACLU Pro-abortion, it’s the ACLU’s top priority. It most definitely takes a backseat to free speech for the ACLU. As a matter of fact, the ACLU has fought against the free speech rights of those that oppose it. If its abortion or euthanasia, as long as its pro-death you can count on the ACLU to support it. The only exception to the ACLU’s pro-death stance, is if it is a convicted criminal; in this case they are against death.

#6. The ACLU advocate open borders. Not only have the ACLU opposed the Minute Men, a group who are simply exercizing their freedom of speech, protesting and stepping up where the government is failing, but they have helped illegals cross the border.

#5. The ACLU is anti-Christian. The list is endless on this one. Under the guise of “seperation of Church and State”, the ACLU have made a name for theirself on being rabidly anti-Christian. This is one area where they are most hypocritical. They oppose tax exemptions for all churches, but fight for them for Wiccans. They are against Christianity in school, but oddly remain silent as our children are taught to be Muslims. Whether its baby Jesus, ten commandments, or tiny crosses on county seals, the ACLU will be there to secularize America, and rewrite our history.

#4. The ACLU Opposes National Security. The ACLU have opposed almost every effort in the arena of national security. From the bird flu to bag searches, the ACLU have been against it. No matter what kind of search someone tries to do to protect people, the ACLU have proved they are against them across the board. Its kind of ironic that they don’t practice the principles they preach.

Take a walk into the NYCLU’s Manhattan headquarters - which it shares with other organizations - and you’ll find a sign warning visitors that all bags are subject to search.

#3. The ACLU Defend the enemy. They have a long history of this one. They defended the P.L.O. in 1985. They defended Quadafi in the 1980’s. And they continue today. They have told Gitmo detainees they have the right to remain silent, as in not talking to interrogators. One issue that really disturbs me is their refusal of funds from organizations such as the United Way that were concerned the money would be used to support terrorism.

In October of 2004, the ACLU turned down $1.15 million in funding from two of it’s most generous and loyal contributors, the Ford and Rockefeller foundations, saying new anti-terrorism restrictions demanded by the institutions make it unable to accept their funds.

“The Ford Foundation now bars recipients of its funds from engaging in any activity that “promotes violence, terrorism, bigotry, or the destruction of any state.”

The Rockefeller Foundation’s provisions state that recipients of its funds may not “directly or indirectly engage in, promote, or support other organizations or individuals who engage in or promote terrorist activity.”

#2. The ACLU supports child porn distribution and child molesters like NAMBLA.

As legislative counsel for the ACLU in 1985, Barry Lynn told the U.S. Attorney General’s Commission on Pornography (of which Focus on the Family President Dr. James C. Dobson was a member) that child pornography was protected by the First Amendment. While production of child porn could be prevented by law, he argued, its distribution could not be.

There is no doubt the The ACLU are perverting the Constitution.

#1. The ACLU fufills its agenda using my tax money. What more can I say on this one?

Anonymous said...

Oh, please. John Sams has written a letter in the Town Talk today saying he is not a member. So his son started a group. Big deal. I am not a Sams fan, and I will not vote for him, but enough is enough over this ACLU crap.

Delores made a mistake lying to the council. She made a bigger mistake by trying to gloss over it.

Whether you like her or not, there is no argument that she is an educated lady who knows right from wrong. She knew she was lying when she did it.

Why did she do it? Whether you want to believe it or not, here is the truth. Ned wasn't getting any information from his city attorney (that he can fire at any time) about the CLECO case. He asked Delores to go with him to Baton Rouge to meet with the REAL lawyers. Unfortunately, the word got back to the brothers (and sister Bridgette) that Ned was actually getting facts about the case. The danger in this is that Ned might find out that Bridgette was contributing absolutely nothing to the legal effort, yet, she was making a fair living by billing "expenses".

When the gang confronted Delores about the Baton Rouge meeting, Delores lied to protect Ned. She screwed up, she shouldn't have done it and now she's paying for it. While Bridgette was ranting and raving about not being informed, everyone in the roon knew that she knew everything that was happening.

Delores shouldn't have lied to protect Ned. Ned should have acted like a Mayor (leader)and told them the truth. Instead, he sat quietly next to Delores while she took the heat.

It's admirable that Delores tried to protect her boss, but, the lesson learned is that lying eventually catches up with you.

I understand her lying to protect Ned (I didn't say it was right), but, I'm sorry that Ned didn't come to her aid.

I am proud of Delores for standing her ground with attorney Brown. I believe Mayor Brewer will be strong willed and will have the backbone to be a leader since she will not have a weak boss to protect.

Anonymous said...

Only Delores can apologize for the lie that she got caught telling, regardless of the justification. If she does not plan on lying to us in the future, regardless of the reason, she should apologize and so state her intentions. To keep silent is to stand by her falsehood. Saying she misspoke is yet another lie and she should get it out in the public, tell the truth and get on with her campaign. Only then can she get it behind her. The longer she justifies her lies and urges her supporters to do likewise the deeper the hole she digs.

Anonymous said...

Delores was not standing her ground on principle regarding Brown, but on a lie. Hardly commendable!

Anonymous said...

You're right, anonymous. Screw people who get injured! They don't DESERVE representation. For that matter, who cares about the disabled? Or people who lose employment due to someone else's negligence? They're third class citizens and deserve to be treated as such.

By the way, what kind of law did Ned practice before he was elected?

What? He tried personal injury cases, you say? He did? What?

Lamar, I think these trial lawyer whiners need to put things into perspective.

Anonymous said...

Rather than standing her ground, she looked like a cornered rat who knew she was exposed and reacted with irrational attack mode in place. I don't know if we want that kind of representation.

biff said...

your analysis is correct but incomplete. everyone understands a loyal employee trying to cover for the boss. that is not the slam on delores. the slam on delores, after it was obvious she had lied, was not to come clean in the michele interview. instead, she glosses it over as a "figure of speech", showing her character flaws and insulting us, the voters. her interview with michele was outrageous in it's contempt for the voter. " figure of speech". give me a break. just like clinton, all she had to do was fess up and it would have gone away. instead, she lied again, compounding her original mistake. i will not vote for someone who is so flawed, almost childish, in refusing to stand up, admit the mistake, and say it was poor judgement. that is all that was needed, and she fell way short of that. even worse, it was not like she was blind sided by the questions. she knew it was coming and intentionally decided to call it a figure of speech, after much thought about how to handle it. i'm sorry. i expect more of my elected officials. anyone incapable of admitting mistakes, and in stead compounds those mistakes has no business in public office.

Can I interrupt the 'mayor's race' debate to ask about the unofficial reports and emails about people being robbed at gun-point in the parking lots of the Alex Mall. Don't read the TT often, but do tune in the KALB news and haven't heard anything about it....just warnings from emails and people who have heard the stories for other people. What do you know?

I don't think anyone is being schizo, Biff. The point I made is that if a picture in a phone book for Roy Law Offices is the best ammunition you have against Jacques, then you're running on empty.

The anonymous writer made an equally valid point about the some of the clients the Roy Law Firm represents-- people disabled and injured due to the negligence of someone else. Anonymous also made a valid point about Mayor Randolph's legal career-- that before he was elected, he also represented injured and disabled individuals.

By the way, doesn't Dr. Sams also treat and work with disabled and injured individuals? Isn't that a part of his profession as well?

Lamar White, Jr. said...

Concerning the ACLU brouhaha:

Andy Sams did indeed attempt to start an ACLU chapter at Bolton. However, he and his group refused to abide by the Rapides Parish School Board rules concerning school clubs and organizations. For instance, they refused to give the main office a list of their membership, which was required of all groups. There were other rules they refused to comply with as well. That is why they were denied their request to form a club. It was a RPSB rule, not a Bolton rule. So, Dr. Sams was basically suing himself. Why not just follow the rules and start a club? It's not like they were asking for DNA samples.

In addition, Andy Sams and some of his ACLU buddies caused quite a stir shortly after September 11, 2001. They refused to stand for the pledge. RPSB policy requires students to stand for the pledge. They are not required to recite the pledge, but are required to stand. Most of the time this is not a big issue, but at a time when emotions were high and most Americans were proud to show their patriotism, Andy Sams and his buddies decided to cause a problem. What they did wasn't illegal. It was just in very poor taste. I suspect they were doing it simply to stir things up. That doesn't sound like someone who is the son of a "patriot" to me.

There is now an ACLU chapter at Bolton, which is sponsored by Nancy Monroe (almost a contradiction in terms). They don't do much though. Signs around the school say "Fight for your right to party! Join ACLU." Very telling.

So, you see, Andy Sams was simply doing what his father taught him (by example) to do. Buck the system, even if there's nothing wrong. Cause a problem, even if there's no reason to. Scream and holler just to get publicity. Sound familiar?

I certainly don't want to see that happen to our fair city for the next four years.

Lamar White, Jr. said...

Biff, the reason is simple: Jacques practices family law. Again, you would be best informed by going to the courthouse and reviewing the cases Jacques has taken on. Legitimate personal injury and disability cases account for only a fraction of his workload. Jacques has also worked on a number of civil rights and employment rights cases, including the well-known Cleco case.

Well I see I didn't miss much the past couple of days. Still the same stuff over and over. Well the Give me Liberty crowd was interesting. Those of you taking up for Delores telling several lies to cover up for ned really ought to wake up. ned has used, abused, let abuse happen and just layed down on the freakin job for the past 4 years. Poor poor pitiful ned my aching arse. Anyone who was a part of his inner circle should not hold office. Yes she knows what was done to who and by who. Scarlett you are a loyal person and that is admirable. Please ask Brewer the hard questions and see if you can live with the answers.

If Alexandria is to have any chance of dragging it's self out of the pit, it will be with Roy or Sams as Mayor. Johnson is a truly good person but he won't be able to lead as we need. All the others are nothing more than self promoters and feather their own nesters.

This area needs fresh ideas and new people in office. We need people who will not do business as usual. Ya'll hoot and holler about who is backing who. Why not actually pay attention to what this city needs and forget about all the school yard my Dad can whip your Dad BS.

On the turnout thing, If the citizens won't go vote they deserve everything that happens. If the folks that post here would spend the same amount of energy in stirring up the people of this town, the turnout would set records.

So what ya'll gonna do? Whine and wail or do right?

Lamar, you sound like Jacques represents the downtrodden for free. Sorry, he's a lawyer and it takes a certain type to be attracted to that profession. I assure you he has sued companies for the fee at times rather than the principle. Let's not canonize him please.

I understand that Sams' son Andy is not running for mayor, but I also know he was put under a huge amount of pressure to please his father and to serve by example. Sams' destructive attitude, and its effects on his son, was never more apparent than on the morning of September 11th when a teacher informed Andy's class about the hijackings and attacks on the World Trade Center: upon hearing this news, Andy and his friend high-fived each other and said "yes!"....I am a firm believer that children live what they learn at home...Not such a good role model. No. Not at all.

biff said...

so now the issue is about sams' son, who recently graduated from one of the top schools in the nation, university of chicago. as churchill said, if you are not a liberal at 20, you don't have a heart. if you are not a conservative at 40 you don't have a head. that aside, it speaks very well of sams campaign that the best you can say is his son might be a (omigawd, dare i say it) a liberal.

blue eyes said...

Biff,
Liberal I can live with. Over-the-edge is a different story. Young Sams passed out necklaces for students to wear which depicted America as the KKK and as punishers of Iran. Certainly not the patriot his father claims to be. Makes you wonder.

Infamous video?

Anonymous said...

Who cares where Sams' son graduated from? No one said he wasn't smart. But intelligence is not the issue. Dr. Sams calls himself a "patriot" in the paper today. The son of a true patriot would not have acted the way the younger Sams did in his high school days. He would have been taught to respect and love our nation. I'm not saying that having an opinion either way is wrong, but I don't know anyone that is former military that would allow their son to do what Andy Sams did. Those men and women bleed red, white, and blue.

Oh, and Biff? My issue is not with Sams' campaign but with his character or lack thereof. And I can and have said MUCH more than just the comments about his son. That's just the tip of the iceberg.

Anonymous said...

Sams does appear to be rather a loose cannon.

Taking Dr. Sams' letter at face value I issue this challenge: What is Dr. Sams' "cure" for our "outrageous" utility rates? Once again Dr. Sams has ignored the documented facts. Yes, last year's gas debacle cost us all. But even if all possible proactive steps had been taken we would have still paid more for gas. Let's look at electric rates: I wonder if Dr. Sams is aware that City rates are comparable if not equal to Cleco's. Don't believe me. See for yourself. Call the PSC; call LEPA. Ask for their rate comparison tables that are prepared monthly. The proof is in the pudding!

Little Lord Lamar gets rid of the riff raff so more space can be available so he can justify the next savior of Alexandria.

Additionally, I wondered why Lamar was so excited about the downtown condo's. Brigette's brother - interesting. No wonder the non-African American community (scared to use the N word) has reservations about participating/

To the person who said Brewer was lying to protect her boss--
I am a part of the city administrative staff and let me assure you that Ned did not ask her to do that. He has said time and again that he does not have to make excuses for meeting with the Baton Rouge lawyers. That was his right as mayor. He was stunned when she said that in the council meeting and said he didn't quite know what to do at that moment. Knowing her as a good and honest person, he believed her when she said she panicked and misspoke. Later, he was forced to set the record straight. He was in a very bad position. He didn't want to hurt her, but more important, he could not be dishonest. Not his way.
There have been many good things that have happened during the Randolph administration. I strongly believe that he in leaves the city as a much better place than he found it. His leadership has been good for the city, particularly during the base closure years. Yes, the past four years have been more challenging as the make up of the city council changed and some city staffers got lax in their jobs and worse. Yes, it is time for new leadership. The mayor told us that himself and that it's why he's not running again. Is it really necessary to pick on him now? Have any of you served in public office? Do you know what it's like to be on the job 24/7? Yes, it was ultimately his choice, but I think the constant pressure and living in a fish bowl has made him old before his time. Come on guys, can't you leave him alone and stick to discussing the candidates?

Anonymous said...

Mr. and Mrs. Brewer and their supporters should be grateful to the mayor rather than explaining her poor choice of words by saying she had to defend a "weak boss." How dare you try to blame it on him. He's not the one who said it, she is and she should take responsibility. Now, let's look at what Ned has done for them. Mr. Brewer's business was started by Brewer and Ned's ex-wife so the Randolph name could promote it. Ned appointed Mr. Brewer to boards, etc. Mrs. Brewer's capitol projects job was provided by the mayor. Then he promoted her to chief of staff. Now he's supporting her candidacy. Boy, looks to me the Brewers and their supporters oughta be VERY grateful to him. Fact is, Mrs. Brewer wouldn't have the opportunity to run if it were not for Ned. Then again, maybe they don't believe in "dancing with the one who brung you." Don't know if I can support her if she blames Ned for what she did. Ned is a great person and has been a great mayor. No one can take that away from him. I'd have voted for him again if he had run. I think lots of others would have too. I hope he enjoys his retirement. He deserves that.

To anon "part of the city administrative staff" - there you go again lies and coverup:

OUT AND OUT LIE -
"the past four years have been more challenging as the make up of the city council changed and some city staffers got lax in their jobs and worse."

THE TRUTH -
Before being elected to his final term, Ned was exhibiting symptoms consistent with dementia. This condition continued and worsend through the ensuing years to the point of incompetence. To blame the debacle of the city administration lead by Ned over the past few years on the council make up and long term city staffers is IMHO weak, small and characterless.

I hope we, the citizens, can elect a mayor/leader that will be able to work effectively with whatever council makeup we, the citizens, choose and not blame us, the citizens, for his/her inabilities (regardless of whether his/her inabilities are a result of ineptness or illness).

As for the "lax" or "worse" city staffers, these are the same folks that during the beter part of Ned's reign where the cornerstone of his sucess. In his good years he was never a hands on leader involved in the nuts and bolts of city operations. He was a visionary, an image builder and a successful leader as demonstrated by building a team of good, honest, loyal and dedicated "staffers" that in no small part helped him change the image of Alexandria and move it forward.

If in fact you are a "part of the city administrative staff" with any tenure at all - you know this to be the truth. And truth is what has been lost in Ned's eleventh hour as Mayor.

Glad not to be "part of the city administrative staff" at this point!

Respectfully,
A former city administrative staffer

Come on kids, stick to the candidates. Love him or hate him, Randolph will be out soon. It's a moot point whether he's sick or not. True that he's never been hands on. But it's all water under the bridge. From what I hear, the mayor was absolutely sick about dismissing those loyal men. I heard that if he had it to do again, he wouldn't have done it. Word on the street is that Mr. Provosty SWORE they had to go or there would be criminal prosecutions and the mayor would be open to being accused of cover-up. Then, turns out nothing was that bad, or if it was, we don't know about it. So why did they have to go? Maybe that question and all this venom should be aimed at Provosty. It's bullshit that the Mayor "just wanted to go in a different direction." Hey, maybe Mr. P had to clear the way for his blond candidate to succeed Mr. Chambers as chief of staff to put her in position to run.

Anonymous said...

Ken,
Does the city pay you under your contract to blog in the Mayor's defense?

A faction of the council led by Myron Lawson instructed Albin to go on the bogus witch hunt. The Provosty's legal business with the city (and other governmental entities) is too lucrative NOT to do as told by the ones who approve your contracts.

Yes, Ned now "regrets" being mislead and dismissing loyal staff. So that makes him what? A peach of a guy???

It's not like you guys are saintly figures in all of this mess. But again it's all water under the bridge now. One funny thing about all of this is that after dealing with Delores, a couple of the black councilmen have commented to folks that they long for the Harold days. Don't it always seem to go, that you know what you've got til it's gone.

So, Delores' social calendar is more important than working hard and doing what it takes to honor her supporters by attending necessary political events to get elected. Blame others for her mistakes and let others do her work for her. Some qualification for mayor!

Anonymous said...

Sad thing? Delores wont answer those questions and is NEVer IN A SITUATION where she will even be asked. She is the most protected candidate in this race. JUST LIKE NED. Its all she knows. NED has been protected by everyone and YES it is ok to take shots at him . If you have not noticed he is still the Mayor and is still being paid.
The fact is that Delores does a Picadilly on NED. SHE takes credit for EVERYTHING that might be good in his term and then BLAMES others, Harold, Ned, Kelvin, Everyong. She either IS or is NOT a part of the current administration. Life doesnt let you just pick and choose.
I ask again the same thing somoene else asked. NO BULL, what exactly can she say that SHE did in the current administration.? WHAT?

Anonymous said...

Why can't we have a city attorney or Albin? I don't think we need both.

Anonymous said...

Candidate Brewer cannot answer for the mayor whether he has regrets. She cannot answer about a conspiracy theory involving Myron. She can only answer questions about her own work in the city. The writer did not say there was a cover-up of anything. I heard some stuff that did not need to happen was pre-emtively stopped. That ain't a cover up. Plus, the mayor has the right to deal with personnel matters in the way that he did. End of that story. When the administration found out about stuff that did happen, people were dealt with, i.e, Dorsey and his merry bandits. So, stop making things up and find your dirt somewhere else.

That said, when I met Garry Brown, I did not know he was Bridgett's brother, but personally, it doesn't make a difference to me.

I met him when he first opened up his downtown Internet cafe. It's a really amazing space, and I wish him all of the best.

Cenla Antics

In reading today's issue of the "Town Talk, I was rather taken a back to find that this blog has attracted so much attention. Although I appreciate Mr. White's request of posting authors using their real names, he seems to not understand that it defeats the purpose of the blog. Would Mr. White stand and deliver if he had a problem with his neighbor? (use a scenario that fits here folks.")

Apparently the blog owner feels LLL (Little Lord Lamar) has requested eleimination of the anon capability of this blog site.

LLL you should be supporting Delores instead of Jaque. You spin facts as well as she does.

Where were all the Mayoral candidates Saturday night during Sheriff Slocum's fundraiser? Joe Fuller was the only one smart enough to be present when approximately 2,500 people showed up. Of course, they were not all voters in the city limits, but what a crowd!! Even looney Gloria Hearn supporters were passing out push cards. Kind of sad to think that only Joe Fuller had the political sense to attend and no one else.

if the sign debacle is any indication of what roy thinks is a big deal, I seriously doubt he's got a bombshell to drop on ms. brewer. what a whiney little boy. he's got a lot of growing up to do.

Been Around the Block said...

I'm glad to see all of the attacks on Delores-that's a good sign that is winning. See many attacks on Alice Hammond lately?

Looks like some of the faithful have gotten things a little out of whack concerning the actual numbers at the Slocum fundraiser.

Survey says...Here's the actual numbers. 3870 catfish plates served. Some of these were consumed in the annex but almost half were "take out" orders.
As to the after dinner auction, there were approx 1500-1700 people inside the annex when the auction began. Bottom line is the showing of support for Slocum was so strong that any candidate will have a tough time defeating him.

I wouldn't hold my breath that any consistent theme/string on this or any other blog is representative of the pulse of Alexandria. In other words, don’t rent the tux or buy the ball gown for the swearing in, if you plan to be with brewer.

Geez.

delores is in free fall. the only question now is if sams will get enough votes to sandwich himself between the two leading black candidates.

the soothsayer said...

Biff!
Hope your weekend went well!

Here's my opinion on the top four finishers. Keep in mind that this is a snapshot of the landscape today and is subject to change. The political front in Alexandria is VERY fluid. Since most voters do not begin to focus on the race until ten days out...anything can happen. Also keep in mind that about 60 % of voters admit to choosing a candidate only 48 hours before they vote. This means that the predictions can change up to the very last minute!

Survey says!

#1 Jacques Roy
#2 Joe Fuller
#3 Delores Brewer
#4 Almost a tie between Rosevelt Johnson and Dr. Sams

However, let me temper this with an observation of the Sams campaign. If Dr. Sams holds a press conference on or about the 25th or 26th and tells the voters these things, watch his campaign explode in the final days.
Sams needs to say:
1) That he has been investigating the corruption in city hall and has realized that the city is in far worse condition than even he immagined.
2)Announces that to correct the problem will take more time and effort than he first thought.
3)Tells the voters that he had re-evaluated his position on his medical practice and decided that Alexandria's future is too important to compromise his efforts on.
4) He has decided to put Alexandria first and suspend his medical practice until he can put Alexandria back on the right track.

The feathers and bones have spoken...

No science behind that prediction. Funny, funny how people just "think" they can make predictions based solely on intuition. Every poll conducted so far shows that the run off will either be Delores and Johnson or Johnson and Roy. Fuller's camp ain't going nowhere. Charles and Alice are jokes. Sams is finished. And it's not b/c he said he would still practice medicine. It's so much more than that. Going on the attack won't help him now that there are two other whites in the race. Nothing can salvage his campaign. The only way he could've won was to be the ONLY white in the race. People would have held their noses and voted for him.

Anonymous said...

Free Fall? I can't stop laughing: 1. at that rediculous comment
2. You actually support Sams

biff said...

and just what "polls" are we talking about? i sure haven't seen any.

biff said...

delores was in free fall the moment she lied to the council and then lied to the public about lying to the council. i meant "figure of speeched" to the council. sorry.

Anonymous said...

No she's not.

biff said...

most importantly delores surely loses in a run off with one of the black candidates. no possible chance of cross-over. they got a taste of what is coming in her six month tenure as chief of staff. her own supporters will leave her to cut a deal with her run off opponent.

Scarlett said...

Soothsayer - Obviously, your feathers are man-made and your bones are from a jackal. Delores is leading this race and has from the beginning. She spoke yesterday, along with Sams, Harry Silver and couple of others at a gathering I was a part of. She gave the best speech by far. Afterward, many people were talking about how impressed they were with her. You guys need to decide what your argument is. First you say she is part of the corruption and will be devoured by the City Council and then you say she will not get the black vote because of her contentious encounters with the Council. All you have to do is read some of your "rabid" comments on this blog and you immediately know who the frontrunner is. I have more confidence in Delores now than before. I already have my "gown" for the inauguration.

Anonymous said...

so you dress her too? Who feeds her? We already know who tells her what to speak.

Anonymous said...

Must suck to have to attack. You are wrong, your candidate is too far behind, is an arrogant prick who should have dropped out before he got in, and you are mad b/c she can win,and will win in a runoff.
Poor wittle guys. Maybe he'll say something funny again at the forums such as "lynching" or "nuking" something. Gets better evrey time!!

Anonymous said...

Scarlett, just for discussion, IF Delores does not win out right in the general election ,( lets assume for purposes of this to be objective) then which candidate of the others do you believe she can beat one on one?

Scarlett said...

Well, obviously, she believes she can win over any candidate. Believe me, no one believes this is going to be a "walk in the park". I believe that many of you have underestimated Delores. She is a fighter and a hard campaigner. She truly loves this city and believes she is the best person for the job. You really must look at this objectively. She is leading in the polls and has since the beginning. Roosevelt is also a hard campaigner. They both have cross-over voters. We just believe that Delores has more.

blue eyes said...

Alot of you keep mentioning these polls. Give it up. What's the real data?

Anonymous said...

nothing but flowery talk. I was wanting to have a real conversation about who she belives she can beat and not just campaign rhetoric. Certainly you do not believe that head to head she could be Roy do you ? I mean, he would draw from white and Black. Same for Roosevelt. So who would she most like to run against IF she even made the run off?

the soothsayer said...

Now Scarlet, what have I ever done to make you treat me so disrespectfully?

I have never attacked you. We just disagree on your candidate's qualifications. I understand you'll support Delores to the death, and I'm OK with that.

That does not change the fact that she is an empty suit as far as her ability to administer a 165 million dollar budget is concerned.

You said this:
" She gave the best speech by far. Afterward, many people were talking about how impressed they were with her."

and then this:
"I believe that many of you have underestimated Delores. She is a fighter and a hard campaigner. She truly loves this city and believes she is the best person for the job. You really must look at this objectively. She is leading in the polls and has since the beginning."

However Scarlet dear, you have not told us about Delores' vast knowlege of the workings of this city. You have not told us of her experience in dealing with the day to day problems she will encounter and how she has an indepth and independent ability to run this city.

I know you like her personally, many do, but the fact is that SHE IS NOT QUALIFIED for this job. Also Scarlet dear, to what polls do you refer? The ones commissioned by her Florida campaign handlers?

Bernie Pinsonat is the most accurate polster in this state for Louisiana Politics. He was the ONLY polster to accurately predict the outcome of the Winn Parish DAs race. I trust his numbers.

He has Delores polling second to Roy as of late last week among the WHITE candidates. In case you all did not know, a local group of business leaders have hired Pinsonat to track the campaign. These men are heavy hitters and have a lot at stake on the outcome of this race. Among the BLACK candidates, it's tough to beat Fuller's long time political ties. He is well known across the state and treats the local Black pastors well.

Scarlet, you may have no faith in the feathers and bones, and that's fine...but mark my words, Delores will not sit in the mayor's chair.

In deference to Scarlet:
The man made feathers and jackal bones have spoken...

And Delores cant even pick out her own clothes either it seems.

How can Delores claim credit for handling $280 million in Utility Capital projects. She had little or nothing to with Utlity projects. They were handled by the Engineers involved along with the various Superintendants. Not Mrs Brewer. If her name appears on an invoice it has the same meaning as Neds signiture, just a formality required for payment, nothing that helped with getting the job done.

I was at Bolton throughout the entire span of time that the nursing homes were there. When they arrived Thursday night they had no food or bedding with them. Four teachers (Gourgues, Self, Fortenberry, Stalcup) all three administrators, Coutee and the SRO were there and helped. The three female teachers contacted Mrs. Mangum and she came that night with a group of church members with food, water and bedding and other needed items. Some of the teachers bought food and others went home and cleaned out their pantry. They were all lifesavers that night and went above and beyoud. The next day the cafeteria workers began preparing three meals a day even when there was no power, anothe great group of ladies and then here came the student council and Mrs. Rozier who did a little bit of everything.( There are some great kids at Bolton)There was little or no help from the Red Cross because we were not a "Red Cross Shelter". The additional food supplies and water came from FEMA and the National Guard and generators from thr fire department. Dr. Sams came in about the second or third day and saw the patients on the floor and went and bought every air mattress he could find. He also helped the patients get the medications they needed. He just did it and did not even want people to know how he had helped. Some of you might think he is a sorry SOB but you do need to give the man credit for what he did. Actions sometimes speak louder than words. A number of people went above and beyond during this time and all of them did it because it was the right thing to do. if you are going to tell what happened tell it all and tell it right.

Blah, Blah, Blah. It is funny how much the most qualified candidate gets attacked on here. Why? Because she is the most qualified, leading out of all seven candidates, and that is all you uninformed, terrible people can do. Sit back, throw your immature comments, and watch as your particular candidates wither away.
It is sad that some people get on here and actually buy the crap that is posted. Lucky for everyone, not enough people care or read this to matter. Gives you somehteing to laugh at every day.

Anonymous said...

And who, praytell, is the most qualified candidate? Dr. Sams?

Hahahahahahahahaha...

biff said...

well, let's see. dolores was appointed by the present regime to insure business as usual, roy has zero experience and sams has 8 years on the school board with more employees and a bigger budget than the city, so that would be a yes.

Anonymous said...

dolores is a liar. period. on tape, not once but twice. if liar is considered a qualification, then arguably she certainly is the most qualified.

Anonymous said...

oh, wait, and i forgot, like most liars she has utter comtempt for her fellow man. "oh, really, my husband was selling the insurance to the housing authority? i didn't know that." "oh really, my brother-in-law was on the housing authority tit? i didn't know that." "oh, really, that b*st*rd wife of sander's undercut ME on my bid to the authority? "well, i will turn him in for doing what i tried and failed at". yeah, delores has qualifications.

Anonymous said...

I don't know Mrs. Brewer, but I would assume that if she is at all connected with the current administration of the city of Alexandria, she's a good old boy too. Mind you, I said "assume."

But, seriously, how could she not be?

Vern Kennedy is pretty well respected polster also. In recent polls, he shows Brewer leading followed by Johnson.

I know that most of you probably don't have the opportunity to drive through the communities surrounding Peabody or South Alexandria. But, if you do, you will see that Joe Fuller has the black folk sewn up and that he will be in the runoff with Roy.
