18 Days Left!!

The age of 18 in our society has been deemed the age of majority. Time for frivolity is dimished as we enter the "adult" world. Eighteen days are left until decisions are made for Council seats and Mayor. Please take time to calm yourselves and make a serene and educated decision before entering the voting booth. I have voted for several individuals who personally I did not care for, but none the less did the job for which they ran. They continue to receive my vote.

Your children are leaving, businesses are closing, the employment base leaves much to be desired and you complain on trivialities. These are the questiond that need to be answered: WHO will do what needs to be done? WHO will do so in an EFFECTIVE manner? AND WHO will stand and state "Althought the decision was a bad one, I made it" THIS is the individual you elect.

Good Luck Cenla.

Yes, with eighteen days left there is time for anything to happen in the Alexandria Mayor's Race.

Lets hope in the end, sanity prevails.

"There is nothing petty and "junior league" about Ms. Brewer. If you knew her well, you would not think that about her. She is a hardworking, grounded, kind person. As mayor, she will remain one of the people and won't forget who are her bosses--the people. She was not born with a silver spoon in her mouth. She and her husband have worked for everything they have. You are trying to paint her as a lightweight because she's a woman. You sound like someone who thinks women should stay at home barefoot and pregnant. Well, get over it. It's a new world."

Well, well, well...the girls have come home from the mall with a brand new bag of make-up. Trouble is, no matter how much lipstick you put on a sow, she is still a sow.

Brewer is the blonde headed face of the past inept administration. No matter how shrill her Junior League prissies become, it doesn't change the fact that she is an empty headed bimbo. Look closley and you'll see the puppet strings leading right back to the Provosty law firm and the rest of the silk stocking crowd.

Need more proof....look at her slick advertising campaign. Takes big money to put together an ad like that. Sombody is tossing money at her like there's no tomorrow. And you say she's independent? What a joke...

according to einstein's definition of insanity its: "doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results."

a look at ms brewers campaign contributors shows that she is controlled by the same crowd that has made their living from the city's teat for years.

Anonymous said...

I am truly amazed that people will vote for one of the other candidates. There is only one who is qualified. The other 6 are not even close.
No one is controlling anyone. The business people in this community know who the best person is so they give money. Whats wrong with that? When I see people like Lafe Jones, Charlie Weems, Roy Martin, Blake Chatelain, behind somebody, I think they know what they are doing, don't you?

Anonymous said...

no not at all. however, if ms brewer is elected mayor we will wish her the best and support her. time will prove us right or wrong with respect to the other but history and human nature already have.

I want a lucid, at least semi-intelligent response from one or more Brrewer supporters to this question: What bizzare set of circumstances or political "dynamics" has to occur for a white republican to win a mayoral race in a majority black city? Just give me one half ass logical response?

Anonymous said...

anon ~ ms brewers automatons in here can only answer that with she dresses nice or has a pretty smile etc...to get the real answer to your question you ask Lafe Jones, Charlie Weems, Roy Martin, Blake Chatelain et. al;

Let me see if I have this straight. In the course of 16 years, we have had an interstate bisect our town and shift many dis-placed people to other neighborhoods where by property values dropped and crime rates rose overloading the ability of the police department to cope with the increase crime rate. The river project was completed and we have a functioning port that brings trade to our city(?) and supports the riverfront center and two hotels as a convention destination, as well as a revamped air base that is being fully utilized to enhance our status as an international airport. All of which has served to decrease our population figures because this is such a great place to live. Therefore I want to continue the progress of the past administrations by doing what? Toto, can you please lick my glasses since they seem a little foggy?

Neither the Brewer supporters nor the candidate have ever addressed the issue of her public dishonesty and untruthfullness. There was some suggestion that her lies (which she lacks the character to acknowledge) were justified in defense of Ned. Is that their position. Lying is justified when it can do you some good or avoid some heat. Whenever this issue is raised, her coven attributes it to male chauvinism. I think that her honesty and veracity are central issues as is her connection to the present power structure. Do you really think the Provosty Firm is paying up for good government?

Thus far, I have not seen or heard, in print or on the web or in a forum or debate, a rational explaination for the Brewer lies.

Observation: When Mayor Ned Randolph was rumored to be considering retirement and then announced his retirement, everyone stood tall and said what a great mayor he has been including the black "leaders". Except for the ongoing Cleco audit/suits and removing 3 department heads, the great record has not changed. If Alexandria had many great things going for it under Mayor Randolph, why would you want to change to a complete unknown as your Mayor? As you look at the candidates other than Brewer, you find the following:
Sams will be Part-time mayor;
Roy doesn't have any experience;
Hammonds, oh well;
Smith can't talk;
Johnson is a parrot;
Fuller comes with the police jury experience of corruption & mismanagement.
Are citizens of Alexandria willing to turn over it's enviable future to the unknown? Put the city first and not your vested interest.

Anonymous said...

What about it Ken? How are you going to defend the lying by Martha Stewart? I know what you are thinking, just don't say a word and it will eventually go away. Don't think that is going to work this time. It is time to stand and deliver.

Anonymous said...

Seems like there are a lot more vested interests in Ms Speak Brewer's campaign than all the other candidates combined. I guess the people putting multiples of thousands of dollars in Ms Speak's campaign just are looking out for our city without any selfish motives. Oh Happy Day, we are now in La La Land. Thanks for the civics lesson from a real seasoned in the know political veteran.

Anonymous, would you like me to read a bedtime story to you? It is called "The Emperor's New Clothes" and in it there were people that talked nice and did not want to be offensive at any cost ( I am sure a few were even afraid their livliehood would be damaged) and just could not confront the truth. Anyway, after 16 years, some of the folks closest to the big guy saw that sometimes he did not wear clothes and one of the court scoundrels actually had 8x10 glossy photos that made good blackmail material that his cohorts could use to get the big guy to agree to all sorts of things. I don't want to give the ending away, but some folks figured out they did not want business as usual any longer and woke the community up to elect some brand new folks that promised to do better.

Anonymous said...

OK, lets say that Ned was great and the powers that are really in control are trustworthy and people aren't really craving a change. That still does not deal with the gigantic issue of Brewer being a lier and an opportunist. I don't think that issue is going to go away and I don't think that anyone in the Brewer machine intends to deal with it. Brewer's dishonesty and then her dishonesty about her dishonesty is still my greatest barrier to supporting her.

If you believe everything else you Brewerites say (and most of us don't) you still have the issue that you won't touch. You just leave it out there like a big ooozing sore.

Anonymous said...

OK. So keep bashing Mrs. Brewer. If she is not the answer you all-knowing political genius', then who is? Sams? He is laughable at best. Hammond? Please stop. Roosevelt? Nice, but sharp as a spoon. Fuller? The most corrupt individual ever. EVER. Smith? See Roosevelt. Finally, our little trial attorney, Mr. Roy? Puppet for Dems, would be so clueless, the corruption would run rampant, would be the Council's favorite Mayor ever.
Now tell me who I should vote for oh wise people of the blog.

I agree anon. 6 jokes and 1 qualified. Whether you like it or not should be as easy as 1+1. Scary to think people would even consider, for a moment the other "candidates" if you can call them that.

Notice that the Brewer responders and supporters talk about everything except the 2,000 lb. elephant in the room - the figure of speech - the mis-speak, the lies. Every survey in the Town Talk says that the people are looking for someone honest and truthful above all else. Honesty and truthfullness mean nothing in Brewerville. ANSWER THE QUESTION

I agree, Bridget Brown was acting like a fool, however that does not justify an outright lie. And then the adle brain Ned cut her knees off the next day about the meeting with lawyers. I guess DB meets with so many lawyers that she can't keep track. A lie is not a mistake, it is simply dishonest.

Who can possibly beat the Joe Fullerisms?

1) "I was a component of downtown development in the City of Alexandria!"

2) "I helped bring businesses into Alexandria, like Star Trek, and Union Tank Car."

3) "Why can't we have a waterslide?"

4) "We have to reach out and get all the money from somebody else, and quit spending our own money here in Alexandria."

5) "After working for International Paper, I became a small business owner, owning the Buckwheat Grocery Store, and as a consultant for city government."

Anonymous said...

I haven't logged on in a while but i see things are the same. Brewer supporters will not address the mis-speak....Everyone knows that Provosty is running the city and has been for a long time. Any one that doen not know this is not in the loop. Provosty could loose a lot of city $$$ if Brewer doesn't go in. If we don't want the same old thing in city government, make a change.. If you only knew what was going on you'd vote for new faces..

Anonymous said...

If the $75 dollar an hour Ken J and $150 Albin, who have been on the full time payroll at the City for over two years to keep Ned from falling on his face, can't come up with an effective way to handle the lie issue no one can. Of course lying is just a little thing to the Breweristas. It is their stock in trade. Why should that little character flaw be a problem for their Mayor.

Do you really want that type person in charge of this City.

To the person who claims Delores cannot win in a runoff because this is a majority black city. It is only 51% black right now and normally it takes 58% before its a sure thing that a black will be the mayor...unless you have a situation like in Baton Rouge with the Kip Holden factor and his crossover appeal. Blacks traditionally do not vote in as great of numbers as whites, that is why it usually has to hit 58% to assure a black will be elected. So, children, Ms. Brewer can and will win a runoff with a black as long as she gets her vote out and believe me, she'll get her vote out.

OK Brewer suppporters - help me out. Just watched the forum.

#1. She continues to spout the Charter/law, etc. - not being followed. How did she not solve this problem in her reign as Chief of Staff? She didn't get the opportunity to answer "If elected: How long before you can become effective?" Well she couldn't do it in her 16 years...so just how long will it take?

#2. She said none of her contributors expect anything. Well What about baby Roy o. Martin?
She is "toying" with the idea of providing public transportation to job sites outside the city. WHAT?????? Baby Roy has been politicing government support to transport minimum wage workers to his plant located well outside the city for the past two years. He located there to avoid city taxes and take advantage of tax incentivized areas...now he wants the same jurisdiction that he ditched to support his bottom line. She's biting? How much did he contribute? So all you have to do is look good, smile nice and write a big check and you get whatever you want?????

I wonder why News Channel 5 or the Town Talk haven't reported that the Reverand Mr. Errol Dorsey was arrested for embellizing money from the church he leads? Isn't he Fuller's( and JW Slocum) #1 man?

After watching the forum, Alexandria's only option is most obvious: Jacques Roy. He is the only candidate that actually answered every question with a real solution and the only one who offered a vision for our city.

Anonymous said...

All you had to do tonight was to watch the forum to see who was the best candidate. Brewer did really well. Not that I need to answer- but to help you figure out what was actually said-

"#1. She continues to spout the Charter/law, etc. - not being followed. How did she not solve this problem in her reign as Chief of Staff?"

Chief of Staff can only do so much-- as Mayor she will have more authority to actually accomplish her goals.
#2. Providing transportation to work sites generally helps those individuals that can not afford transportation. Get real-- we have to work as a community to progress.

All you want to do is BASH candidates and be negative--if you don't like Alexandria and can not have a positive attitude about progress in our area--move!

BTW--John Sams was really scary--if he is elected- lots of people will move!

Anonymous said...

I have concluded that there is absolutely nothing that will get Ms Speak Brewer to admit she lied on several occasions and then apologize for it. Without the admission and apology she is saying lying is OK and she will do it again and justify it after the fact when caught. She has no problem with conflicts of interest and will continue to justify them when hers are made public. The unsaid promises are obvious with a look at her campaign finance report. Not matter what, Ms Speak's supporters will never address these facts nor will any action she initiates cause them to waiver in their support. They have too much invested in her election. When these facts are mentioned, the messenger is called names or invited to leave the city. Nothing really new here but I agree, the little kid in the Emperor's New Clothes needs to keep pointing out the nudity that is before our eyes.

You want to help me figue out what she really said? Then answer the "Roy O. Martin" question. It's not NEGATIVE...it's real, so answer the question. I thought it was interesting that Delores admitted that Robert Ratcliff was one of her biggest contributors while she was standing in the Performing Arts Building. This building was constructed by Ratcliff. The building has severe leaks during wind driven rains. The leaks are due to improper installation of the brick veneer on the building. Ratcliff was told by the Architects and the City that he would required to fix the problem but he refused. The results of the "expert" are in and further support the fact that Ratcliff is at fault for all the leaks and he still refuses to address the problem. So..will Mayor Brewer cut the Rat some slack as a result of his generous contributions to her campaign? What say yee Breweristas?

Anonymous said...

You have some concrete proof of the utility fund for the bus system? The transit system is funded for the most part by federal funds passed through the DOTD.

As far as Martin goes-- there are federal dollars available through the reverse commute funds that assist businesses in providing transportation to help folks go to work who do not have transportation. ( that means Alexandria citizens!)
And rural transporation ( or lack there of)in Louisiana is a real problem and a deterent to economic development.

Why would you want to bash and or stand it the way of development in this region? Some people just love to to complain but not be a part of the solution.

Anonymous said...

Geeze- you people! Obviously do not know squat about business! The city does not own the Performing Arts Center. However, since the city provided funding for the project, Brewer supported having a team of specialist (when she was the Mayorial Assistant)look at the center to assess the problem and who was at fault.

And those of you who think a mere $2500 is going to "buy" a candidate need to get a grip!

Anonymous said...

The Utilty Fund transfers about 2 million dollars per year to the ATRANS Fund to subsidize bus service. It's common knowledge and is laid out clearly in the City's annual budget. Problem is, if you cut the 2 million you lose all the federal matching funds and those with no vehicles are without transportation. Maybe its a good investment...or maybe not.

Anonymous said...

Actually you are wrong Anon...the City does own the Performing Arts Center as well as the land it sits on. It was built with State money, some City money, and lots of private donations from the Couglin Saunders Foundation. The building is operated by the Arts Council through a Cooperative Endeavor Agreement with the City. Next time get your facts straight before you type.

ROM has been begging someone to transport his workers ever since he opened the plant at Chopin. It seems he has three options: (1) Get some fool at the City to run the bus there; (2) pay his workers more than the $7-9 per hour so they could actually afford a car to drive there; or (3) provide his own transportation. Option 3 would mean he would have to pay his workers for the time he has them in his vehicle transporting them to work.

We know he's not going to choose option 2 or 3.

He'll be looking for the same option when he opens the Allen Parish facility for the same reason. He locates facilities on property they own - or mostly own and can get the most tax advantage out of - can't blame a good business person for that. BUT you can't stick a plant in the middle of nowhere and then whine when you can't get workers to come to work!

Scarlett,

I disagree. I think there are actually a great many people on this blog who haven't yet made up their minds. Tonight's mayoral forum likely shifted a great many votes into Roy's favor.

I've followed this election closely, and until today, I have never heard Mrs. Brewer speak about the notion of a loop (i.e. condensing the population), while Jacques has made this a part of his campaign since Day One. Also, I noticed that Mrs. Brewer slightly adjusted her stance on Operation Fast Track, echoing Jacques' statement that fast track is not a "cure-all." (To be fair, Mrs. Brewer, ten seconds later, said that it wasn't a "catch-all," a subtle variation).

Furthermore, I have noticed that Mrs. Brewer is now speaking about the notion of change-- why we need change, how we have changed, and what changes are in store for us in the future. This has been the cornerstone of Jacques' campaign from the very beginning (see: Jacques Roy announcement speech).

In other words, if you liked what Delores Brewer said tonight about population condensing, the notion of the loop, and the opportunity for change, you should vote for Jacques Roy, as he actually represents a real change from the status quo-- and isn't simply saying when it's politically convenient.

Scarlett, I think what you're reading on this blog and on mine is real frustration over the status quo. Personally, I find Mrs. Brewer to be a professional and an incredibly nice and generous person, but like it or not, she's still part of the establishment that has operated Alexandria for the past twenty years. (By the way, this is what Dr. Sams was talking about when he said "silk stoking crowd." He wasn't talking about the people on this blog; he was talking about the reigning establishment and those with a vested financial interest in maintaining the status quo). And it's isn't "mean" to point this out.

This is OUR city, after all. These are our tax dollars. And so, it's not contradictory to point out that:
1) Most of Mrs. Brewer's donations were received several months ago, and she seems to have tapped out her potential pool of donors. AND
2) Mrs. Brewer may be overly reliant on the opinions of those who donated heavily. (If the story about this transportation program is true, it just doesn't seem fair to the average taxpayer. A business locates outside of city limits to avoid city taxes, thereby decreasing our tax base, and would like our taxpayers to "bus" workers to its plant in order to save said company money on transportation costs. I'd like to know more on this issue).

Anonymous said...

"A business locates outside of city limits to avoid city taxes, thereby decreasing our tax base, and would like our taxpayers to "bus" workers to its plant in order to save said company money on transportation costs. I'd like to know more on this issue). "

Yes, it's a fact of life that business DO want to pay the least amount of taxes possible - just like everyone on this blog. One of the conditions for getting Union Tank Car was that they remain OUTSIDE the city. Maybe we should have told them to get screwed and go to Texas?

Let's assume bus service is initiated to Union Tank, Hunt Plywood, and the Martin Plant. Who do you think it helps most - the "rich" owners or the people who will be able to work and provide for their families?

Getting and keeping large, job producing companies is extremely competitive. This idea may be one that separates us from other competing cities.

Maybe a plan can be worked out where some of the cost will be paid by the bus riders and the remaining expenses can be subsidized by the participating companies.

It's interesting to note that this same discussion is taking place regarding running buses to LSUA. I haven't seen anyone griping about that.

While I am not ready to endorse this idea, I don't think everyone should dismiss it outright just because it was proposed by Ms. Brewer.

I don't think Roy Martin would lose one penny or one minute's sleep if this service is initiated. However, I do think there are some folks who could potentially make a good salary and provide for their families if they could get transportation to good jobs.

Let's keep an open mind. I can't vote in this election, but I commend Ms. Brewer for talking about yhis innovative idea. As Dr. Sams is fond of saying, this "out of the box" thinking is what we need to move Alexandria into the future.

Anonymous said...

I have talked to Mrs. Brewer one on one. I have heard her speak. This woman has a plan and will hit the ground running. Have any of you "honorable" men ever said something that you wish you hadn't said, and it came back to bite you? I know I have. All of you guys on here are perfect, that is why you are not identified. But since you posters are so forthright, none of you use your real names. The only one I have seen so far to use his proper name is Lamar.

Delores has guts and knowledge. She will stand up for what is right, and become an exemplary mayor for Alexandria's citizens. Go ahead and make fun of her. She is pretty, intelligent, confident and ready to work and make this city succeed. But isn't that always the kind of woman (or girl) who intimidated you? Makes you feel insecure, doesn't it? Takes you back to the eighth grade and the popular girl refused to go to the movies with you. Still trying to get over that? Therapy will help. Just get it out, talk about it and accept it.

Anonymous said...

You can like and respect women and dislike, distrust, and disrespect liers. You obviously understand that Brewer made an error when she told that rediculous set of lies at and to the Council meeting and on TV. Everyone has sinned you say and I agree. The problem is that the dishonesty and absolute refusal to take responsibility and acknowledge that dishonesty is a bad thing CONTINUES TO THE PRESENT. She appears to either not learn from her mistakes OR not agree with you and I that honesty and truthfulness are essential to establish public trust and telling the truth is the right thing to do. We need to know that Brewer understands and believes what YOU just said. Right now we have no indication of that.
Your continued rant insisting that honesty and truthfullness are male weaknesses is not helping your candidate. I am sorry that you don't know more honest and truthful women.

Anonymous said...

It does remind me of the eight grade when pretty blonde bimbos ruled. Things have not changed much since then. They had their airhead entourage then and Ms Speak has hers now. Enough to make me seek therapy. Interesting your gang acknowledged this before anyone.

Anonymous said...

Disrespect and distrust of William Jefferson's dishonesty is not racist - it is a product of his conduct. Disrespect and distrust of Delores Brewer is not sexism - it is a product of her conduct.

The message there is that it is "unfair and unreasonable" to expect honesty and truth from any black or female official.

Anonymous said...

I don't mind that Ms Speak shit in her mess kit, but it does irk me that she has invited me to lunch and not informed me of said fact. Little sexism just to tickle you girls' fancy, which obviously hasn't been tickled enough, maybe since the eight grade.

I hereby extend my apologies to anyone that may feel affected by anything I have said in regard to the "C" word. You know, (corruption). I was nearly floored by the way the question was posed to Dr. Sams on the issue of corruption as if it was a matter of high comedy and anyone proposing the idea ahould be a subject of ridicule. After the follow-on questions from the rest of the candidates is when I had my epiphany. The light shone and the guilt lifted when I realized, I too can help myself to whatever I am cunning and brave enough to grasp. No more will I let the shackles of morality bind my hands from reaching for what is not mine nor my feet from carrying me to opportunities beyond what I could have imagined within the bounds of decency. It is OK to participate because I will be surrounded by those that will forget with no need to forgive. What a city I live in and did not appreciate until I saw the light. Hallelujah, the treasury is mine!!!

To the anon who wrote this:
" I have talked to Mrs. Brewer one on one. I have heard her speak. This woman has a plan and will hit the ground running."

Really?

Then tell us the plan. See you cannot because the plan, a plan, ANY plan, does not exist.

" Delores has guts and knowledge. She will stand up for what is right, and become an exemplary mayor for Alexandria's citizens."

Ahhhh another myth. See, this gaggle of supporters can never give any details because like Brewer, they are clueless.

Here's the truth. I know Delores personally and have a genuine affection for her. She is truly a nice, warm person. She is also a self admitted airhead. When the campaign workers leave, and Delores is alone with her thoughts, she is scared to death. She will tell you her husband talked her into accepting the Chief of Staff position. She will tell you she doesn't have a clue as to run the city. She will aslo tell you that the is strapped to this roller coaster and cannot get off if she wants to keep her husband. She puts on a brave face each day and marches off to do what her husband wants, out of fear. And, if she is elected she will do the same with the mayor's chair, out of fear.

Delores is no more qualified to be Mayor than Blanco is to be Governor.

Did I hear DB correctly last night?

Moderator: Is there corruption at City hall?

DB: I'm not going to answer that right now.

It's not just Mr. Martin seeking bus service. Other places, such as where I work have also contacted the city to inquire about bus service or a partnership to provide service. I am a nurse at St. Mary's Residential Training School. Some employees at our faciltiy, that employes 300 people, lack transportation to get to work. I think this issue should be examined and maybe it's possible and maybe not. But as another post said, we've got to think outside the box. When people can work, they are not on the public trough and they contribute to the economy and tax base.

Anonymous said...

Everyone knows the corrupt folks who worked at city hall have been dismissed. Now, it's time to get the council in line.

Anonymous said...

Ms. Brewer didn't want to comment because there are ongoing investigations of certain city council members. But she discussed what she as mayor can do, and that is to reign in the city council and insist they read and understand and FOLLOW the city charter.

Once again: "airheadedness" or lack of skill, training, or judgment are separate issues from the simple question posed here. She has left little room for doubt about her veracity. She obviously lies without hesitation and does not feel that this moral and ethical lapse is any of our business. She dealt with direct questions about these lies with absurd excuses and justification. Obviously the thinks that: it is not important, that people don't value or expect honesty in city government, that we will forget this transgression, or that it is more important to be well connected and well financed that honest. I don't know the answer but this question will remain as a cloud over her candidacy, and if she wins, her administration, until it is finally laid to rest.

Delores is not and will never be corrupt. I agree that some folks who needed to go, are gone from the administration. The real reason Chambers, Williamson and Craig were let go:
Chambers ordered and got Williamson and Craig to go along with the city providing 100% of the cost of putting in infrastructure in Chamber's brother in law's subdivision development. This was quite a problem because the council had passed an ordinance to provide only 50% of the cost. This was discovered while Chambers was on administrative leave re: the CLECO stuff b/c he was not there to cover his tracks. When Ned, and his attorneys and Delores found out, they asked Williamson about it and he readily admitted that Chambers ordered he and Craig to sign off on this. (He later recanted that statement after Harold got a hold of him.) The Council was informed and Ned and the staff put an immediate stop to the city paying the 100% of this infrastructure. The mayor and his attorneys also went to see the Legislative Auditor and the Attorney General to report what had happened. That is the real reason those 3 had to go. Because the potential illegal activity was stopped, though, the lawyers thought it best to settle the lawsuit for peanuts. They advised Ned not to release the info since the trio was gone and the activity had been stopped. But the 3 guys just can't leave it alone and spew venom toward the Mayor and Mrs. Brewer. The trio still refuses to take any responsibility for their own behavior. But some of us who know the real story cannot allow you guys to pin the debacle on Delores. I for one, think Ned should have had a press conference and told all--even though they were able to stop it...because the public wanted to know. But the lawyers strongly advised him not to. Looking back, since those guys are so bitter and continue to slam their former boss and colleagues, he should have let it rip...

Trying to get the truth out of Brewer is a frustrating and futile exercise. I hope Alexandria finally at least demands honesty if not brilliance in it's mayoral selection.

Also, the question about what donors might expect for their $$$ - some of the donations are retrospective awards for previous "kindness and consideration". It would be crass for somebody like the Ratcliffs to forget the millions in Alexandria Taxpayer Dollars that they have banked during Delores's tenure. That would explain Junior paying Delores and openly supporting Roy.

Scarlett:

Well, at least you think I am right about something!

Seriously, I understand your alligiance to Mrs. Brewer, and she should be proud to count you as a loyal friend.

But I've also been following this from the beginning, and though I haven't trailed Mrs. Brewer, as you have, I've noticed that her campaign theme has undergone some changes, and yes, it does seem curious to me that the most notable thematic changes have been issues that Jacques Roy has been speaking about on a daily basis.

Two nights ago, at the Young Professionals Forum, Jacques used a map of the City of Alexandria to illustrate traffic flow, population condensing, and the notion of the loop. During the forum, Mrs. Brewer did not mention the word "loop;" however, yesterday, she made sure to. It's just curious; that's all. Personally, I'm glad she's talking about a loop, because smart growth is critical. But I wonder whether or not this is one of her main issues (it's nowhere in any of her campaign material)-- or if it's just something she's now seriously adopted because of Jacques. (And it's not "bashing" her to point this point).

Mrs. Brewer may not always follow in-step with the Randolph administration, but she's running based on her experience with this administration--- and that's why it seems curious to be talking about governmental change.

Anyway, I wish you all the best.

Regarding this busing issue, no, I don't think this is "thinking outside of the box."

Programs like this have been implemented in other cities across the United States. Union Tank Car may be technically outside of the city limits, but it's not exactly MILES away. (And that's when these programs are used).

Do I think it will benefit the large company or the workers?

The truth is, there's no way for me to know unless you showed me said company's financial statements.

I've read that these busing programs typically attract an inordinate number of single mothers and fathers, which, on the one hand, is good (because a regular paycheck is coming in) but on another it's terrible (because these parents are being further removed from their children, and instead of seeking employment near their homes, they're working several miles away from their families, stranded until the bus picks them back up. This creates a strain on families and leaves already children even more vulnerable).

Still, I want to know more on this proposal.

Anonymous said...

Lamar,

I respect your opinion and your loyalty as well, but to claim Delores is changing or taking ideas from your candidate is rediculous. Who was in this first?
Delores and others in the city have been talking about a loop for a long time as well as the traffic problems. She has also campaigned on this issue the whole time.

Blogger said...

Anonymous,

I understand that Mrs. Brewer has been in this race longer than Jacques has, but it's still fair to point out that her recent statements about change (in the sense of governmental change) and population condensing (including the notion of the loop) is nowhere to be found in any of her campaign material available to the public. I received her mail-out. I've read her website. And I've listened to hear speak on numerous occasions. Until two days ago, I hadn't heard these issues mentioned, and that's why I find it curious. No, it's not ridiculous. This happens all the time in elections. One candidate gains traction because of an issue and another one absorbs some of that material into their own campaign.

Many people have spoken about a loop; it's not exactly an original idea. But it's still curious to me that two weeks out, we're now hearing Mrs. Brewer adopt some of the same language and ideas as Mr. Roy. Again, I'm not "bashing her," because, obviously, I think they're excellent ideas.

I wonder though whether or not it's truly a priority of hers, as it isn't in any campaign material.

Anonymous said...

Delores' crime spot is now running. It's excellent. In my opinion, she has put together a professional campaign with great TV and mail pieces. This is going to make her very hard to beat. Lamar,

I have to agree with Scarlett, Delores has been discussing the possibility about a loop around the city from the very beginning of her campaign.

Anonymous said...

Delores has no way of keeping people from writing stuff on here. Too many people know about what went on at the city to keep it under wraps in a place this small. But Delores nor anyone in the administration would not write anything that would breach the settlement. That would be so stupid. An anonymous post is not an official statement from anyone involved in the case...plus it was chicken shit anyway. Shame on whoever would post that stuff. I say Bridgett and Myron are behind this with the goal of helping one of the blacks...they'd love to stir the pot again and get the three former employees to go back to attacking the administration and Delores. They want the white people to feed on themselves so they can assume ALL of the power.

I wish her the best in her race. It is a shame that some of her supporters are not so honorable.

Blogger said...

Been Around the Block,

I still can't seem to find any discussion of population condensing in any of her material. I also noticed that she's now using the word "transparency," which, again, has been a hallmark of Jacques' campaign.

I don't expect to convince you guys, but I promise you that I'm not the only one who has noticed this. It's not necessarily a bad thing, because these are important issues.

Let me give you an example of how this is being perceived: I just received a phone call from someone, a professional person known throughout our community, who gave money to Delores early on, but is now supporting Jacques.

This is what they said: "I haven't heard any original ideas from her. They may be good ideas, but it seems like everything she's talking about has either been lifted from Jacques' campaign (down to the words she uses) or the result of her consultants telling her what to say." I know that sounds harsh, but guys, that's really the perception. That said, this person also said that Delores still "exceeded" expectations last night. So it's not all negative.

Anonymous said...

Lamar,

Again I respect your opinion and you as a person, but I have to disagree with you. Your last post sounds a little shaky to me. All the candidates have repeated each others ideas at some time in this campaign. Delores has always stated her own ideas especially dealing with traffic, a loop, Versailles, etc. Also, how convenient was it that Jacque had a map just for that particular question at the YP forum? C'mon my friend, don't tell me he didn't know that was coming. How convenient, "Well, now that you mention annexation and traffic, let me show you something on my trusty map." I say BS, and it looked really bad.
I hope to run into you soon, which I am sure we will and we can chat about it. Whadya say?

I would also vote for Condoleeza Rice for President of the United States due to her poise, intellect, and ability to remain calm in the face of world calamity. So what is the point? Anonymous,

I was at the YP forum too, as you know (we probably sat near one another). It's not too surprising that the Young Professionals would ask a question about 28-West expansion, considering this has been one of the biggest issues in this election. Jacques came prepared, and I thought he explained his ideas succinctly and clearly.

Yeah, sure, let's meet up. Send me an e-mail.

whats the controversy with fast track? we're for fast track its the sports complex that should be pulled in favor of the down town red river pier.

Anonymous said...

We Saw That,
The problem with fast track is that pet projects have been pulled to the front of the line in the capital outlay budget using the $37 million that has taken 10 years to accrue with no state or federal match, hence, no leverage. It is a one shot deal that will not cover the remaining $63 million currently on the capital outlay budget and at the present rate of accrual will take 17 more years to collect and during that time span there are bound to be more demands and cost increases. There can be no talk of sport complexes, marinas or anything else that the city may want to build because they would have to enter the capital outlay process and be budgeted. There is not enough money now to finish what was started in 1996.

Anonymous said...

ah thanks spanky - we were under the impression that fast track was the versailles extension and sugar house road update.

Anonymous said...

We Saw That,
It is, they pulled those projects to the front over projects like the Samtown-Woodside drainage project that has been on the books for at least 15 years. That is why I said in a previous post that the next time they flood, it should slow Charles Frederick down enough so they can catch up to him and flail him.

Anonymous said...

maybe "they" are hoping for a ninth ward replay with samtown-woodside. sad.

Anonymous said...

Look, being prepared is fine Lamar. No doubt he was, just seemed to me as well as some others that he was a little "too prepared".
Anyway, no use arguing about it. It's done and so are the other "big forums". All there is to do now is campaign, let the tv ads and direct mail circulate, and then gotv.

Anonymous said...

Another big issue is whether to get $37 millions worth of improvement for $37 million or $300 million for $37 million in city dollars. It's what Fuller calls leverage, Sams calls boondoggle, and CFS calls progress. Get re-elected at any cost. Then let the poor bastards eat cake.

Anonymous said...

well the thing is is that no one (candidate wise) seems to actually know what the citys budget actually is. we've heard 150 million then 166 million and finally 200 million.

Anonymous said...

The concept of FastTrack and leveraging money is a good one, but as always the facts have been ignored:

1) Yes, there is $37 million available. You complain that it is being spent. Why was no one complaining when it was in a vault collecting dust? After all its really your money.

2) The Federal matching funds are unimaginably slow to trickle in. Yes, mathmatically our $37 million if used as the 20% match of an 80/20 program could potentially build projects totalling $185 million. The problem is that only about $3 million is available for our entire parish in a year. Assume that the City gets all $3 million every year forever. It would take 62 years for the enough money to be available from the feds to complete $185 million in work. Can we wait that long to build projects which will spur our growth and development as a city?

3) Each year you wait adds more to construction costs. The last time I checked wages, and material and fuel prices were not falling.

FastTrack may not be perfect but its a good start in the right direction.

There you have it. Can we wait? Not unless you want to take the loop road on the way to your final resting place. Not taking the lead has cost us enough; the future is before us. We must control our own destiny.

And no I am not Mary Poppins!!

Anonymous said...

wesawthat,
The actual budget really depends on what you are talking about. If you look at the actual $ amount in each fund you come up with a number much larger than the actual income/expense of the City due to all the transfers of funds between funds. It's an accounting thing. No duplication of funds and the total City budget is ~$150million including the capital funds.

Anonymous said...

sorry wesawthat,
budget is $150 without capital
~$200 with capital

Well, which is it? Did Sonny & crew provide 100% for Harold's brother-in-law's subdivision or not? See that's what I don't like. There's something going on here involving taxpayer's money & it's being kept secret. Boy! Ole Scarlet turned into Prissy..."I don't know nuthin' 'bout birthin' no subdivisions, Mas Sonny!" It took less than 30 minutes from the anon poster to impugn Sonny & he answers! It seemed like all the air rushed out of the room. What's these people hiding? Delores calls him & we all agree to play nice with taxpayers money! Geez!

Anonymous said...

If you are so sure that the City paid for Harold's brother-in-laws developments, file suit against the City for unjust enrichment. Otherwise be quiet and let's talk about the issue at hand: electing a capable and competent Mayor. Mary Poppins is already scratched from my list!! What about you?

Anonymous said...

Roughly $50 million is the annual operating budget. One thing that has been done with the budget is that each department has been set up as a cost center and can be analyzed from previous years performance as to their actual needs. Therefore, as a department becomes more efficient or has a lesser or greater need for funds, the change can be viewed and contrasted against prior years. That is one thing that is a bit deceptive about stating that the city has a $150 million budget, approximately $50 milllion recurs annually and $100 million was established in 1996 as a capital outlay figure which we have saved $37 million toward. The $10-12-15 million fund balance which is the overage of what is collected in taxes and what is budgeted for operating expense is what the council likes to play with like monopoly money when they buy Jakes & Regions & stuff like that. It is also the money that funds emergencies like the katrina & rita demands that were placed on the city until reimbursed by other agencies.

Anonymous said...

From Lamar's site; I wanted to add it here. It seemed pertinent since it is about a candidate:
Since someone asked and since John Sams is running on HONESTY and INTEGRITY, just how did he in first campaign for school board member run when, in fact, he did not even live in the district and had to rent an apartment within it, and two, when he campaigned for his second term, just how did he bargain his way to getting the police jury to magically remove Albert Street from Bolton's voting district, thus removing a Bolton alum and respected businessman (Wayne Denley) as his competitor.

Furthermore, what alumni list (many 1000s of names and addresses) did he demand as a board member and have the superintendent deliver to him, even though the administrator stood by the copyright rule which stated that:
This directory is for official school and alumni association use and also for individual communication of a personal nature between members listed herein. Use of this directory for any other purpose, including, but not limited to, reproducing and storing in a retrieval system by any means, elecronic or otherwise, photocopying or using the addresses or any other information in this directory for any private, commercial, or POLITICAL mailing is strictly prohibited and is direct violation of copyright and constitutes misappropriation of corporate property.

John has a pattern of questionable ethics in his dealings with others. I was surprised to hear him say last night that he got the truth from people who talked to him. Certainly, this rang true. He only talks (on a regular basis) to the people who are as angry and destructive as he is. Surely the citizens of Alexandria do not see this man possessing either honesty or integrity.
These are all facts. Yes. True.

Anonymous said...

Has any candidate stated he or she would no longer hire the same old people for studies along with the same old landscape architects, architects and engineers. Doesn't the city have people already on the payroll who could do a lot of the work these contracts are for. Why have a city attorney and then pay hundreds of thousands of dollars for a law firm across the street. Candidates! Specifically comment on your policy and whether you will change these professional contracts and use different outside lawyers if we need any at all. Address the things we have been griping about on this site, as I believe this is a mirror of the citizens concerns.

Some deal, I am sure, with the police jury. I don't know how it happened, but that it did. Check the records.

Jaques is foaming at the mouth as he speaks about the immediate need of the great loop road ... a map of the great loop road presently hangs in the office of Gilchrist Constuction Company ... Randy contributed $7,500 beacuse he is solely interested in good, honest government ... Jaques really doesn't know his largest contributor ... etc., etc., etc

I guess that's what they call the fresh approach to government? Heck, Chris Roy's close and personal friend, Edwin Edwards was using this approach years ago! Yep, the acorn didn't fall far from the tree.

Black organizations giving to any black candidate that runs anywhere is not racist, it just good guvment.

When Delores was asked is there coruption in city hall She clearly said I am not going to answer that now....We are waiting for her answer, I guess we will know after the election

I am concerned that Gilchrist paid 2,500, his wife did and the company did. Isn't that the max that someone can do? Sounds like political favors to me. That, my friends is $7,500. Wake up, Alexandria, realize what is happening here. Jacques said he doesn't know him. PULEEEEEZE.

It is called having enough money to contribute heavily to a worthy candidate there is nothing illegal or immoral about it. If something is expected in return, then there is a problem, but not until.

Anonymous said...

Yeah, right. Nothing is expected. Yes, whatever you say.

It always helps to have facts before you whenever you want to make an accusation. One reason there is a campign report is to have everything documented. If something comes up later, then you have ammunition. Until then, your remarks are wild supposition.

Re: campaign contributions. It seems that DB has way more people hedging their bets with contributions $500 to $2500, many families giving multiple times under different names. Architects, landscape guys, bankers, construction companies, lawyers, developers, real estate folks auto dealers and basically people who stand to get taxpayers dollars. Some just want to be invited to the right social events and I think I saw one that really thinks that good gov't actually exists. Poor lost soul! Considering her report, I would say her supporters have No room to criticize any other candidate"s contributers. Note how many contribute to all. CYA in action.

Has anyone noticed that Roy has more hair than Brewer.

hey, lamar is out of town for a couple of days. let's trash talk him. :)

Blogger said...

Hey hey, I haven't left yet! You'll need to wait a couple of hours.

Anonymous said...

LOL. oops. sorry lamar. that was my evil twin sparky. :(

Anonymous said...

Candidates like Brewer and Roy who collect a lot of campaign contributions are obviously corrupt. That's why we need to elect Alice Hammond. She can't raise a dime.

Anonymous said...

Alice for Home Room Charter monitor.

Anonymous said...

Bet you'd see the same contributers lining up the night after the election if Alice was elected.

Congratulations to Lamar, Jr. for being chosen one of Cenla's most eligible bachelors! Some of the other choices are interesting though.

"Legal or not? said...
Are the blacks not reporting their campaign contributions and just violating the law or not really getting any? Money that is."

Is drug money traceable? Reportable? lol

where is this bachelor list located at? is there a url?

Jacques Roy, aka the karaoke king, for Mayor!! Now really, do you want your next mayor on stage pleading for votes at the Frosty Factory??!!?? Even worse, every one ignored him!

Anonymous said...

how pathetic. he is getting elvisitis.

Anonymous said...

the frosty factory is skank central. drug addicts to the max. good job roy.

Just wanted to address something-- because I'll be tied up for the next few days.

Obviously you guys weren't at the Frosty last night, because if you were, you'd understand that there's a real grassroots music scene burgeoning in Alexandria, and it's not often Alexandria gets an Oscar-nominated, nationally-famous indie rock and roll musician.

Second, Jacques spoke for about five minutes, around 8:30, at the request of the event promoter, Matt Ranson. And despite what the naysayer wants you to think, people were paying attention (and he got an excellent reaction from a crowd of mainly twenty and thirtysomethings).

While some candidates prefer to rest on their laurels at the Diamond Grill (where I suppose it's more appropriate to be seen "pleading for votes"), Jacques is out working, answering questions, and encouraging Alexandrians to participate in the democratic process.

On a side note, I agree that the Frosty is typically not the best venue, but last night (ask anyone who was there), the place was crowded with young professionals.

And if you don't think it's important to work for the young professional vote, then you're really missing the point.

Anonymous said...

I think Jacques is wise to court the 20 - 30 something gen X crowd. Think about it this way, today's young professionals are tomorrow's good ole boys...and girls

If you need an example of corruption, you need look no farther that Tommy David, Jr. of Pan American Engineers. He gave gifts, hunting trips and food (while he is not present)to public servants and elected officials that he gets business from. All of that, of course, is unethical and a violation of law. Tommy believes that all is fair in business with public bodies, and practices that notion in a multi-parish area. I guess that those gifts are pretty good too, as he didn't catch much flack for the hooking the sewer lines up to the water in Pineville.

Anonymous said...

whos list of contributors is mr david on?

Anonymous said...

Mr. David would be on Delores Brewer's list.

Anonymous said...

ah, thanks.

I have talked to several individuals who have big money to give to mayoral candidates but havn't given any yet. (No it isn't me...I have no money) When I asked why they explained that it is wiser to contribute to someone in the runoff as your odds of betting on the right horse are much higher. Also, by the time the disclosure forms are filed and posted, the election is over. This makes your contibution a little less public. If a lot of folks follow this pattern I suspect there will be some major bucks spent on round two. But, will it be enough to beat Roosevelt Johnson and his million dollar walking shoes.

Anonymous said...

We.....

I stand corrected. Tom David aka Pan American Engineers has given equal amounts of money to Roy, Brewer, and Johnson. Looks like he has all his bases covered.

Anonymous said...

thanks anon thats even more...interesting.

Heard that Ms. Speak is running a push poll with negative comments about trial lawyers. Anyone gotten a call yet?

Anonymous said...

When a contributer gives an equal amount to the three top runners what does that tell you? He's stupid, An equal amt could be 0, $1.00 or one million but the effect would be the same. No candidate will be happy as she or he did not get an edge. 2. He is contributing for one reason and that is to get preferential treatment. 3. He doesn't care who gets elected, he assumes his contribution will be enough to get in the door and issue larger bribes. Not interested in an honest career in the free market, but wants a little help in obtaining tax payers' dollars(stolen money from those who produce), without having to compete other than on the bribery market. Just be patient and get in on the third primary and I promise all who are elected will take your money. The big winners are the ones who bet heavy on only one horse and he comes in #1. Incidentally have you heard of any candidate who has turned down a contribution on principle or how bout any who refuse to accept contributions?

Anonymous said...

How 'bout someone not as lazy as I submitting a list of those who have contributed to all. I know David and the Whites hit several bases, but I bet other architects, engineers and contractors has covered all their bases too.
