In reading today's issue of the Town Talk, I was rather taken a back to find that this blog has attracted so much attention. Although I appreciate Mr. White's request of posting authors using their real names, he seems to not understand that it defeats the purpose of the blog. Would Mr. White stand and deliver if he had a problem with his neighbor? (use a scenario that fits here folks). I think not ... it would cause undue harm to relationship that needs to work. Hence the anonymity postings on this blog. Mr. White I applaud your interest and your intent; however, I do not think that it will work in all cases.
Now Mr. White to stir the pot a little. IF the Town Talk and KALB actually did a little investigative reporting this blog would be a moot point now would it not? In they're selective reporting, they have sewn the seed that created Cenla Antics. So Mr. White, in finding the answers to the many questions being asked by the public, would not the "real" media use unidentified sources?
In closing, I am aware that I need to spend some time on archiving old postings. I hope to have this done within the next week or two. I would also like to address a statement made on this blog a few postings back. I have never deleted any postings on this blog. In my opinion to do so would again, take away from the purpose that created this blog.

While this is not on the forefront of hot news, it is interesting to note that current plans for the OK Allen bridge would cut off access to the end of Third Street while construction of the new wing at Rapides Regional will disrupt traffic between downtown and the end of Upper Third. Is the livliehood of the affected businesses unimportant or the tax base they represent so unimportant that both at large councilmen and the district councilman have overlooked or aided in the demise of this area? Is there a larger plan or is it gross incomtetence and were consultants consulted ( maybe the affected citizens should have been consulted)? Who's next?

Chances are if you legalize the sale of alcohol in Pineville the deacons at the First Baptist Church will not go to the buffet at the Marksville casino as often.

I agree that it seems Delores played loose with the facts surrounding their "chance" meeting with the CLECO lawyers in Baton Rouge. If this sin is enough for you to oppose her, that is your right and privelege. So who are you going to vote for?
Roosevelt Johnson: He's never met a fact he could understand. Any issue that can be described in more than 3 words is too complicated. There's more to running the city than love, heart and neighborhood. This is a $150,000,000+ business. When it comes to being a CEO, Roe makes a great cameraman.
John "I can be Mayor and Doctor at the same time" Sams: Why would the citizens want to pay the almost $100,000 a year salary for a part time Mayor? Sams would be great entertainment, but, in the long run, he's not the one to lead the City. I think most people believe that in their hearts.
Charles Smith: If you want more of the same (Kelvin Sanders, Bridgette Brown, etc.), he's your man. Whenever Mayor Smith is representing the City in front of potential out of town investors, he will need an interpreter. I'm not sure out of towners know where "Batawn Rudge" is and they have probably never read the "Home Room Charter".
Joe "I'm waiting to see if I can get that other job" Fuller: The richest man in Rapides Parish that has no job. It's amazing how Joe can travel and dress the way he does without drawing a salary. Most people say Joe can be bought. I think it's easier to rent him.

So, there's the lineup. They all have their skeletons and scars. This election may not be about who's the best. It may be about who's the least worse. Sad, isn't it?
If folks like Jay Bolen want to get into the race, now's the time. The campaign money is quickly drying up.
If all you dumb asses wouldn't be so quick to TRY and nail Fields and the Pineville Council with every ounce of mud you can sling, you would KNOW that the Mayor and Council can only vote to allow YOU to vote on what, if any alcohol sales could occur in Pineville. The citizens of Pineville (if you are one) are the only ones who can make such a change.
The better question is do a majority of Pinevillians want an Outback, or Applebees, or Logans, so they won't have to cross the river for a variety of good food.
If you listen to what Mayor Fields said on KALB, IF it happened, it would be based on a percentage of food sales, and not just outright alcohols sales. But it's hard to listen when your head and heart is so FULL of hate!

I'm telling you. i re-read you post. it was a good post and one of the few that actually deals with issues. one problem, at least so far, the candidates have not identified themselves on issues, so there is really nothing to post about them except personalities. and btw, i don't hate delores. she is a good woman. we all make mistakes. i just don't think i will vote for her.
Biff - I won't tell anyone who to vote for - I just want everyone to vote. But, I hope they take the time to truly study each candidate, participate in the upcomong forums and ask the hard questions. Hopefully, everyone will recognize that each candidate brings their own baggage and it is up to the voters to decide which one would be best for the future of our city.

I would have to agree that Fields and Dupree were just lucky enough to be at the right place at the right time. Granted Dupree has a history of a flea jumping from one dog to another but the arrogance that these guys show in taking credit for everything is probably the biggest behind the scenes joke on our side of the rive. And as for BIG NAME restraunts coming to Pineville give us specific name and what did they say. I bet it was nothing to it. This was an orchestrated planned trial balloon. He was on KSYL on Friday, unusual day for that and then the TV last nite. I hate when these paid help try to think they are smarter than the people they govern. And whoever said that Clarence does use the double talk was right. I just listened to the KSYL interview again. His double talk is pretty thick.
It seems like everyone is opposed to each candidate mentioned since Ned announced his intention of bowing out of the race. I don't blame you as they are cumulative a disgrace. I don't see one single qualification mentioned that passes muster. Delores is a nice lady but just can't cut it. She obtained her job she has now because she married raghead, a blowhole buddy of Ned since High School. She is probably the best out there but I think a businessperson with a proven record would be ideal. Black, white, christian, jewish, atheist, I don't care. Just let us find a representative of us, those who work, raise kids, pay taxes and make this city what it is. I've heard all the negatives and agree, does anyone have a person who we can elect who exhibits some positives?
Casual, you have hit the nail on the head: everyone is unhappy with the candidates but no one is willing to step out in front and make a go of it. Someone must break this cycle or we will be a satellite office of Monroe.
No one has mentioned Harry Silver. He is a Philiadelphia lawyer who got out of that profession to his credit. Married a local gal and has been a successful businessman in Alexandria for 60 or so years. He was taught business by one of Alexandria's most renowned businessmen in the 20th century, Mr. Sam Weiss. He raised a fine family and has no major skeletons. He would be a man who would not embarass us in public and with his wife at his side would be a great couple to represent Alexandria on any stage, local, state or national. They sure as hell would be the best dressed and well spoken. Both have strong roots here and definitely want to leave a wonderful environment for their kids and grandkids. Moral, intelligent, competant, honest. Hmmmmmmmm! Hard to find fault with Harry. Of course I doubt he would want that albatross hung around his neck, but who knows. Just a thought.

Harry has done his time. He shouldn't be required to endure any more than he desires. We don't need a one term, band-aid Mayor. We need a person that the citizens would be proud to reelect 4 years from now.
God love him, but, Harry IS 83 years old. If he would happen to run and win the Mayor's seat, we'd be scrounging the city looking for another candidate in 4 years.
Harry has paid his dues. If he wants to spend the twilight of his life baby sitting the criminals on the City Council,it's his decision.
In my opinion, he won't be able to get enough votes to make the runoff. Unfortunately, his age will work against him.

I don't know what Planet you are on, but if you were paying ANY attention as to what has been going on you would have noticed that he doesnt know how to pick his nose without checking with the other black counsilman. Don't forget that his only qualification is that he has a building downtown that he has desperately been trying to get someone to buy and the counsilmen saw this as an opportunity to pull his strings which they have. He has been a ZERO as a counsilman as far as representing his constituency. Not only would I not vote for or support him I have quit shopping at his overpriced store.Others have too.

If Tommy did such a great job, then how come we have so many crime ridden areas of town and our stats are so out of whack - and it didn't just get that way with the last chiefs.

My point exactly. Alexandria is a cottonpatch cowtown that wants to be a city and can't figure out how it's done. We are looking for a mayor, not a saviour. All decent candidates know that the old rugged cross awaits them personally and if they have had any measure of financial success, it is not worth the sacrifice to trade their current status for the mayorship. And I have also heard the sentiment that it is too late anyway. I am just foolish enough to disagree but realistic enough to think I am wrong.
Carolyn, weren't those individuals in your husband's book supposed to be fictitious people? Because if Teasha Talty is Brown or if any of the other characters in that book are real people, then the former Chief may be looking at a defamation suit. Just a word of advice.

I do know that while Tommy was chief, some very nice black and white citzens in bad areas of the city would ask the police to come in and clean up. Police would be dispatched heavily in those areas, then the loud mouth citizens would report police harassment. They wanted status quo. This went on and on. Did't you ever read the newspaper. Fire the chief! Cicardo's Angels and the cartoon on the editorial page police stops man in car because he is black.

Please explain to us Carolyn how Delores is such an asset to our city. Where has she been and what has she done over the last 20 years that has ever benefitted Alexandria. Other than her family, in-laws, business partners etc. Please list her qualifications for the job she now has. I think the answer to these questions may convince some to support her if they have validity.
I knew Sam Weiss. He was a friend of mine. And Harry Silver is no Sam Weiss.
The truth about Harry, from those of us old enough to remember, is that Harry was a NY lawyer, not a Philadelphia lawyer. He came here to work for paw in law, mentor, and brilliant retailer, Louis Levy. Harry took to the business, was a quick study, and shortly after Levy's passing, Harry undertook to squeeze poor old Sam Weiss out of the business and treated him like a leper. The Silver estrangement of Sam Weiss continued until they realized that Sam was old, rich, and childless and thar wuz gold in them thar Silver hills. Eventually there was a well oiled reconcilliation which paid off handsomely for Kathy, Bill and Ted.
That all being said, I just wanted to set the record straight for my old friend Sam. I've known Harry since he came to Alexandria. He's a smart guy and shrewd businessman. He just ain't the saint that somebody portrayed.
One of Delores's main accomplishments is that she was singlehandedly responsible for Ned naming Cicardo chief of police. Always give her full credit for that.
What ever I say regarding Mrs. Brewer will be shredded by mean spirited people.
We will need to wait for the debate KALB is arranging at the Coughlin Center.

I understand that she may have been responsible for getting Cicardo his job and I agree he did a great job, but surely Carolyn, you can come up with some accomplishments of hers. If you cannot give us reasons to support her, how do you expect anyone else to. You can't just say everybody will be mean if you tell us her qualifications. Come on, you said she is your candidate, stand up for her.
I can give you a reason to support Brewer. She is the lesser of the evils that are running. I'm sorry to say that this election is not about picking the most qualified person. It's about picking the person who is the least least qualified!

I've also watched and rewatched the meeting and DB LIES to the camera. She implies that the meeting with the lawyers in Baton Rouge was just by happenstance. Paraphrasing here... "We'd like to schedule an appointment with you."-- DB

Ned's public statement CLEARLY stated that he had a PREVIOUSLY scheduled meeting with this lawyer.
Why? Because DB said otherwise to the Council... which is exactly why BB called her a liar. Now, Bridgett's probably a bigger liar and a crook than any of them, which is probably why she recognizes her type when she sees it... DB LIED. END OF STORY.

I'm amazed. Try as hard as I might I can get no one to list any qualifications DB has. OK, she's the best looking, has an IQ over 70, is a WASP, and has hung around the mayor's office for years. All the others look like the biggest line-up of losers imaginable admittedly, but I don't think I have ever seen such an admission of " best of a sorry lot" as this. Alexandria is finished.
Being that Alexandria had a full utility operation that included production, distribution, and billing, what would a review of the city records reveal and why did the finance department not catch the discrepancies long ago. It is not like the city was inexperienced with electrical distribution. Just wondering.
It seems like we are trying to swallow too many issues here. We have a lawyer (and assistants) that is repeatedly and consistently double-crossing his client. How good can that be for the city. The administration has taken steps like hiring its own expensive "special counsel" whose job is keeping an eye on Sanders. Does this make sense to anybody? How does the mayor, a trained lawyer and CEO of the city, let this continue. Couldn't we spend half the money and get GOOD LOYAL effective lawyers?
I say it is obvious to me that the more smoke and confusion created distracts from the obvious that the mayor and his administration were complicit with cleco in defrauding the citizens and if our own city investigators pursued this, there would be a criminal investigation and not a civil proceeding. Please note that discussion revolves about the spectacle of the dog and pony show and not the core issue of missappropriation of utility funds. Time to focus people.

I'm shocked at your lack of understanding on the CLECO pricing issue. I think the best comparison is the current price of gasoline. You know it costs you 2.76 at the pump but you have no way of knowing what the wholesale cost was. The City knows what CLECO charged but has no way to know if the charges were in line with the contract hence the AUDIT.
KALB NEWS!!!! Why isn't another news agency attempting to jump on the news in CENLA... I watch the local 10:00PM news on Sunday evening and there isn't one local news story... if the city isn't located in the Cenla area the news casters can't even pronounce the name of the city... Plus many times the news is two or three days old...

It is not my ignorance that is showing. The city has the same access to pricing info as any other producer putting electricity on the grid. It is the hourly shuffle where the pricing differential comes into play. Ask California how Enron did it. Take the city records and compare usage & purchase time history to get a thumbnail view. My contention is that the city should not have been absolutely clueless that the practice was occurring and if they were you can now see the caliber of leadership that all of you are so proud of.
Everybody understands the Kevin Sanders situation and why Charlie was fired. The three amigos are gone. Why are not ned and DB held accountable for this fiasco. Who is really running the show. If it's not Ned then it is DB. Or are the blacks on the city council forcing the Administration to do their bidding. In any event I can't see how everyone puts up with this selling of the city.How can DB supporters sanction this and what will change if she is elected Mayor. Will the same people behind the scenes really be mayor as they apparantly are now. Ask yourself why there was not a criminal investigation instituted when the cleco deal came to light as Pugh and Sansing stated intent to defraud. Why is that a civil matter in the first place? Because the administration did not want the mess anywhere near them as they are complicit in the scheme. They are doing their best to plead ignorant as attested by KALB 's incomplete timeline where they fail to mention nthat Pugh & Sansing initially alleged billing fraud and made a deal to help the city recoup by showing where the money went. That is kind of like robbing the bank and making a deal for forgiveness if you give4 back half. What do I know?

Pineville City councilman and long-time reserve police officer Joe Bishop has been suspended for 60 days, reduced in rank and removed as head of the reserve force.
Pineville Chief Jay Barber says Bishop violated policy when he detained in Alexandria three teens accused of breaking into his brother's vehicle in Pineville and returned them to the police station there.
Barber says Bishop violated policy by making the arrests without a regular officer in tow.
Bishop had been head of the reserve force, was removed from that post and was busted from captain to lieutenant.
Bishop told News Channel Five he was angry and felt it was time for citizens to step up to the plate and help solve crimes by juveniles, who, he says, are rarely punished.
Barber says the teens were arrested for the break-in.

I agree Delores is the only candidate that will not make you cringe everytime she appears on TV representing our city. But surely you can't believe she will be leading our city anymore than Ned has the last few years. They both do what they have to do to win and then remain a puppet for the next four years. And incidentally, the attempt to get the 32 G's a month is important as it gives an idea to priorities. If Sams can't practice and be a full time mayor, then neither can DB have a full time job paid for by city funds and still be working for 32 grand a month somewhere else. The whole deal stinks anyway you look at it and just telling us to look the other way is wrong. If you and her supporters OK these kind of activities she will wind up no better than the rest. She needs to address this and give assurances these questionable conflict of interests activities will not continue or she simply will be crucified in the next few months, rightfully so I might add. I believe Delores will continue the GOOD works of the Randolph administration. She has already stated that Sanders would be the first to go. She at least attempted to stand up (even if it was rather sloppily) to Bridgette Brown. She is the only person in city government )Administration and Council) who has not allowed Bridgette to steamroll her.
As for Dr. Sams (aka Gen. Patton, Jesse Ventura or whoever he decides he is today), why would we want to pay the $90,000 plus fringe benefits salary to someone who admits he will only work part time?
You want to know what a person is really like? Talk to the people closest to them.
Would you really want Sams to represent the City in discussions with CEO's interested in locating to our area? Would it really be Sams, Patton or Ventura talking?
When you look at the overall picture, it appears that Delores is the best hope for the City's future.
By the way, everyone seems to be concentrating on the Mayor. The real key to changing the City is to change the City Council. Perhaps, a little more effort could be spent on that endeavor.
You are right there are a lot of subdivisions being built,,,,mostly out of the city where people are trying to get the hell out of this town. It sure is funny that now that she is running for mayor DB is trying to stand up for the city,,where was she for the last 8 or 12 years?????
Let's see, The Lakes, St. Andrews, Bocage are all in the city. West Pointe has grown tremendously. Tennyson Oaks continues to build and sell houses. Yes, there are people moving outside the city. But, guess where there jobs are?
As far as where Delores has been? She's been working for Ned Randolph. Now that she has left her job, she can be more independent.
We know where Sams, Fuller, Johnson, Smith and Hammond have been. Are you proud of their "accomplishments"?

While the power of ascent lies with the council, the mayor has the power of outlining budgetary matters and veto power as well as hiring key positions. By management function and using veto power to curb council enthusiasm as well as structuring budget guidelines, the mayor can wield enormous influence, if he has the backbone and tenacity to do so. It is far from a figurehead job. The mayor also sets the tone for all city functions since he is chief administrator. Above all, he is the face of the city that everyone sees, therefore important that he be well rounded and adaptable to deal with many personalities from union labor to corporate representatives. While the council may work its will by ordinance, there has to be at least 4 in agreement to pass a measure. The council is powerful now because of the collusion of the make up. This election can upset that composition and the council be reverted to a less rubber stamp body. I am most concerned over the election of the next mayor since that direction is set for at least 4 years while the council makeup can change every 2 years. ( by the way, my pronoun use of the masculine tense is proper english and not meant to be sexist.)
Well said, Spanky. As far as subdivisions being built outside the city, there is NO land left INSIDE the city to build subdivisions.
It is illegal to annex property into the city without the consent of the owners.
Developers are buying land outside the city, developing the land and petitioning to be annexed.
If you look at a map you will notice that there was little infrastructure planning for those subdivisions and you enjoy that lack of planning every time you navigate Jackson Street. Hmmm, what happens when maintenance construction is needed to repair a water or sewer main anywhere on Jackson Street Extension? It is only a matter of time that you will be praising the foresight and accomplishments of the past administrations while you are burning 5.00/ gallon gasoline while you are stuck in traffic.
I'm not willing to pay $100,000 for a part time Mayor to run a $150,000,000 city.
One of the reasons we're in terrible shape is because Ned was asleep at the wheel and relied too heavily on his subordinates.
A part time Mayor would open the door to abuse by associates. We don't need a repeat of history.
I agree with you, Spanky. Jackson Street is a state highway. The city is not even allowed to replace a burned out traffic light. Perhaps, you should address your comments to DeWitt, MacPherson or King Curtis.
Everyone is quick to jump on the annexation bandwagon when it comes to outlying subdivisions, but the major drawback is that if they have any age, they do not meet code. Also, the (only) sewer treatment plant for the city is on Hudson Road and every foot of new system is costly to add and maintain from a city system point of view. Throw streets, electrical, water, sanitation, law enforcement, and anything else the city is responsible for and you can see that it can quickly become unmanageable especially if you guage any growth agaist recent past performance of city abilities. We truly have some daunting challenges ahead as a city that can not be taken lightly. I could go on for every aspect of city function but I do not intend to tire or bore. I just think that it is ultimately important that someone is elected mayor that has a comprehensive view of what this place will be in 50 years, and do their part to set the course for the future by weighing all alternatives and consequences.

Dollar Bill Jefferson is going to spend his next term in a Federal Pen. He was an intelligent Harvard graduate and savvy in the ways of black intimidation and government money readily available. Even he could not resist the temptation and when greed overcame the common sense he possessed he got nailed. Now do you think the bozos in city hall could carry his jock strap? They will be in the Fed. Pen within four years. Who are we going to let run the council. Harry or a wife beater. You garden district guys better get your heads out of your ass and find a viable candidate or you will wind up paying more than anyone. And don't give us any shit about Marc not being guilty as hell. The dollars are gross dollars and if the cleco overcharge charges are to be believed, new subdivisions could actually be costing the city money. Future repairs will be the area that is going to dost the city dearly. Look at the older parts of town and tell me about how efficient the maintenence program is. Yeah, we got a problem Houston.
Civil, as I drive the streets I see precisely the problem as I have had construction experience. People need to be aware that we could actually become like East St. Louis where infrastructure repair has caused a mass abandonment of a whole town. Carolyn, you only need to look at the past business dealings of her husband and the current questionable business dealings with the Alexandria Housing Authority to find the answer to your questions.
As to her ability, next time you see her ask her a any question about the administration of this city which requires a DETAILED answer. If you are honest, and not a starry eyed endorser like Scarlett, you will see she has a rather limited grasp of the functions of government. Also, look at her education. She ain't a Harvard Educated administrator like Ned is.
Actually Ned, with his experience and education, was a damed fine mayor until his health began to slip. Ned anointed Brewer because his gold digging wife told him to. Now, in his condition, he doesn't have the strength to impose his will on anyone.
Like the rest of the candidates, she has an agenda of personal gain instead of civil service. Before you jump on the Brewer bandwagon, just because she's "one of the girls," do an honest assessment of her ability without letting any personal feelings creep in. I believe you will find that she is a sub-par candidate.
As to the upcoming election, we do not have an acceptable candidate yet. Hopefully one will appear before qualifying.
Everyone here is moaning over the lack of a candidate. May I suggest the name of a man who has spotless credentials? His Honesty is above reproach, he is qualified, a more than able administrator, and will be retiring from his law practice next year. He has more money than he needs will not be tempted by greed like the rest of the City Hall crowd is.

Jay Bolen is the best name I've heard mentioned so far. The only one without an agenda. Probably does not have a chance but anyone who was worth a shit will have an uphill battle. If he would run it would be for the right reasons and there is not as much to gain for all the politico hanger on's. Wouldn't it be great if someone was drafted by the taxpayers who want an honest man in the mayors seat. Pipedream I'm sure but who knows.
Scarlett, I would feel safer if you would go put on your make-up and let someone else drive the bus. This is not a popularity contest and your sense of danger or lack thereof affects many other people beyond your little circle.
