Dear Passing Thru, I have a small Shi Tzu dog. He stands at the window and barks furiously at the trucks and cars and people that pass the window. The vehicles and the people keep moving until they have vanished from sight and I think my dog is convinced that he ran them off. He is very proud of his accomplishment and even struts arround and occassionally issues a final warning bark to declare his victory and control of his universe.
I think we have the same phenomenon here. These nasty mean people bark at posters with different views and call them names and attack their sexual orientation, intellegence, patriotism, and religious affiliation and the intelligent people say "fuck it" and leave. Then the attackers revel in their victory over the forces of dissent. Woof woof.

This blog started out in good faith to be a forum for the unfettered exchange of ideas on resolving the crises looming in Alexandria City Government.
Lately it has degenerated into a name-calling insult fest where no one's ideas are respected if they differ from ours. We are intolerant, myopic, and, like Perspective says, just plain mean.
The net result is that we stifle ideas and debate and turn off the very people we need to inspire to participate and vote.
Alexandria is turning to crap and we think our job is to flush the toilet. I don't mind adults acting childish but I agree that Rome is burning and I doubt that we will have another chance to put out the flames. Myron Lawson is giving away our money like water and we are fighting about evolution. It just seems hopeless.
Anyway, count me out. I am going to try to find some people who really want to make a difference instead of just hear themselves talk. If this blog grows up, I'll be back becasue there were some good thinkers on here.

I totally agree with your statements and it is unfortunate that this blog has turned to that. I for one have posted in response to some of that name calling about a particular official because I felt the name calling was unwarranted and ridiculous. Unfortunately it was met with more utterly disgusting and hateful statements. I wish that this could get back to the discussing of change which will of course involve people saying their dislikes or problems with particular officials that maybe I happen to respect or believe to be doing a fair job. That is fine and what this blog is for but I wish the hateful and disgusting comments about people could ease up a bit. The opinion of a person on political matters is needed and for the most part respected, but I find it hard to listen, read, or respect anyone who throws terrible accusations/childish-hateful names around. Your opinion and character are put to the lowest level. Don't like or approve all you want but leave the schoolyard insults/name calling hateful disrespect at home.
If you want CIVIL discourse, you created the wrong type of blog. Force people to identify themselves, take responsibility for their asinine comments, and the BS will stop. As soon as you take the accountability out of the posts, they become nothing more than rumor.
Years ago the Town Talk had a column called “Sound Off” where anyone could spout off with anything without signing their name. That feature declined in quality just like this blog has. The weekly newspaper in Tioga is doing the same thing but they call it “Backtalk.” It’s a great formula for selling newspapers, but doesn’t help solve many problems.
newbie: It may be hard to believe, but I guess we are in basic agreement on the Pineville ED issue. Call me disillusioned - I still recall the Union Tank thing and all those that took credit for it, while some of those that really deserved the credit went unmentioned (i.e. Cleco who helped put and hold the deal together while the Alexandria City Council almost screwed it up), maybe I am reluctant to let the Pineville administration take full credit for the developments for that reason. Compared to the reign of Baden and Deslatte, Fields has done a much better job, but then again, look what you are comparing his performance to - nobody has ever accused Baden of being an economic developer and Leo, well, he was hardly in office long enough to make any determination of job performance. I also agree on the future center of economic development in North Rapides, especially considering some of the major projects that are in the works and the population shift. Within the next decade it may not matter much that Rome is burning, we'll just sit on the banks of the Tigris and watch.
Scarlett: I doubt that newbie is Dupree - the latter is hardly capable of breathing and chewing gum concurrently, while the former exhibits a certain sophistication. While I may not agree with him on some/many issues, I would consider newbie a formidable adversary in a battle of the wits - Rich is lacking the equipment for such an endeavor.
On the Randolph issue - I believe that the public would have a right to know if Ned was incapacitated, which he does not seem to be. He may have bad days, where he is not as lucid as he used to be, but at the same time, he hardly appears incapable of making his own decisions. His "keepers" are those that feed him incomplete and/or incorrect information, in the process making him look like a fool at times. Ned is a brilliant man and Alexandria was lucky to have him at the helm for as long as he has been. Now it is time for a change and I think he deserves to be let go with his dignity intact. As we have said before, the problem in Alexandria stems largely from the council (or should I say stems from the council at large?), not the mayor. I like the ABM approach, but think it would backfire as a racial slur, rather than a quip on his non-performance.
Well, we have had more substance and explaination and unity of purpose this morning that in the past weeks. I hope it will continue, I hope it will accomplish something, and I hope that we reject content that is without purpose other than to attack and insult.**

I think we are severly underestimating the problem that is Kelvin Sanders. His loyalty appears to be to those that brung him: the Council. I think that fact puts the mayor at great and constant risk of being totally sold out. Is there a solution?

If Delores Brewer is in fact his candidate, he could make her look like a dragon slayer and I think that's what Brewer will need. I differ with many of you on the value of Ned's blessing unless he goes out on a high note.
Ned's blessing is worthless and he has no high notes left. Brewer is a brainless idiot, and Juneau is nothing more than a worthless political hack.
What we need is someone with the balls to do a complete house cleaning, and smack the council around until they fall in line.

I realize that you think we need a complete purge but that is not likely to happen. We still can, however, make some major changes and over time, cure our community.

I see legislators, republican and democrat, and past officials as well as all of our elected officials in Washington and at the Capitol as well as nonelected officials who always say wonderful things about Ned, always ask how he is in public and private. From Shreveport to New Orleans to D.C. he has a ton of respect so that argument for you is gone. Now does that mean he should still be mayor after this term-no, and the voters will decide that.

Obviously, the person who posted the message about Ranson is very close to him. He didn't even know how to spell his name! I know that Ranson was frustrated (but not disgusted) by the direction the council was taking the city. His reason for moving, however, was not out of disgust. He realized that his most important job was being a father - not a councilman. Ranson and his wife found a home where they could raise their young child. His Barrister Street home did not provide the security needed for his child (I think it's a son). Congratulations to him for getting his priorities straight. He would have definitely made a great mayor. He is honest, smart and doesn't take any crap off anyone.
My God! Whoever has been talking about Pineville being run by an assistant was not kidding. I just read the editorial in the Town Talk and according to DUPREE he has a plan for growth in Pineville. This is laughable. But I sure am glad he is going to "teach the rest of the parish how to do it." Mayor Clarence Fields should be embarrassed it makes him look very much like Dupree is the Mayor. I did not realize it until now . Who is this Dupree character anyway?
Has the question of why Harold Chambers and Darrell Williamson lost their jobs ever been answered? Wasn't there another high level employee who lost his/her job around the same time?
Earlier someone said that Alexandria officials were getting cozy with Cleco again. Are they going to get all friendly and decide they don't need the lawsuit to work out their problems? If so, who's going to make sure we find out the truth behind the dropped ball, the high utility bills, the overcharging, the graft? I hope someone (TownTalk? I just read the editorial you were talking about .Some arrogance but they do not say exactly what Dupree or the City of Pineville has actually done. It appears that all the neighborhoods they list have nothing to do with the city or are not even in the city limits. Our Alexandria officials need to take a lesson on how to get credit for stuff they have no clue about.

I am told that the depositions in the CLECO and Three Amigos cases pretty well smoke. I know that one of the attornies in the CLECO case delivered a complete set to the Town Talk and Billie Gunn has referred to them in the past. The ones that generate the most interest and have the most potentially serious legal consequences are the statment about and by Charles F. Smith. I hope this stuff breaks before the elections.

Newbie: Yes, Shaw got the short end of the credit and appreciation stick as much as Cleco did. Wonder why the purchase of tens of thousands of dollars worth of cotton to clear that field was never a big deal to anybody that didn't write the check? Calvary Industries was, I believe, another example where the deal makers ended up with less credit than the bystanders. Again, I will give you the favorable comparison to previous administrations, where ED was mainly development of the economic and social benefits of the individuals close to and in the administration.

Not true. Billy Gunn broke the Fowler/CLECO story several days ago and it's first mention here was a reference to the TT story. I must take issue with the TT critics, at least as it applies to City Government coverage. It's at least 1000% better than pre-Gunn. Give credit where due.

I noticed in the TT, that Chuck Fowler was fined for doing business with CLECO. This was after he received a letter from then CIty Attorney Nunnally that it was okay to do so. Also, Fowler reeceived the job after competitively bidding with other companies. A few questions come to mind.
Who turned Fowler in and why?
Can Harry Silver sell clothes to employees of companies that do business with the city? e.g. lawyers, engineers, etc.
Can Myron sell insurance to the same group?
How can Marshall work for Patel when the Holiday Inn is trying to get a sweetheart lease from the City?
How can C.F. Smith serve when we pay the Sheriff to collect city property taxes?
Does anyone NOT know the answers to the above questions?
One more question .... How long are we going to put up with this?
It's time to convert words into action. Get involved in a political campaign. Urge people to vote.

Whether you like Fowler or not, give him credit. He tried to get the city to secure a gas contract when the price was right. Instead, he was overruled by Lawson and Smith. They were trying to cut a deal with their buddies William Barron and Jeff Richardson. Do you think any money might have changed hands? Now we, the citizens of Alexandria, are paying for their greed and callous disregard for their constituents.
Of course Harry Silver and Myron Lawson can sell products or services to employees of companies contracting with the city but it has to be an arms length transaction and their can't be any side deals or influence peddling. One of the problems in the printing contract bid business is the customer and the vendor can get together and design bid specifications that only that vendor can fill.
The Marshall and Charles Smith connetion to Patel are certainly a conflict and unlawful. That is why Smith was lying about his connection to Patel via the bar, hotel, and his girlfriend. Marshall obviously is violating the law.
Charlie Nunnally sold copiers and supplies to the city for years so he may have a rather liberal view of governmental ethics.
Agreed - but the problem there is proving anything, i.e. was the bidder really the best suited or was there any side deals. One would expect that Fowler would recognize the problem and not even bid or for Cleco to not accept the bid. Then again, he's not just printing for Cleco, I'm sure there is others that he does work for and they ultimately bid on city contracts. And is the Dumar thing in Pineville a even more severe ethics violation? If that's legit, then I'm surprised that the city council members don't open businesses that cater to various other city needs and give themselves the go ahead - surely something is afoul here ...
And of course there is the Ceasar's Wife thing where one must avoid even the appearance of impropriety and there is the problem. If Harry Silver sells a suit and puts 3 shirts and an aligator belt in the bag, who knows. By the way, the council has been particularly well dressed lately.

You find yourself very bitter and feel like you have no choice but to blame others for keeping you down all the while pushing yourself down by attacking others believing that it somehow settles the score against the fantsized masses of successful people you hold responsible for your status or lack thereof. If your comments were political in nature then I would have a different opinion but its clear that it is more about psychologically stickin it to people who have been successful on some level that you have not and thus validating your otherwise mundane and undistinguishable life. The idea that you can deminish the individual or discredit their achievements makes you feel better about your failures. Its ok if it makes you think it makes you feel better but all studies ive ever seen would conclude that it ulitmtely just makes you feel worse about yourself and thus gives you a greater need to put others down NOT on a political level which would be somewhat objective but on a personal level. All of this is much like the cowardace of someone who throws rocks off the overpass at nice cars or leaves grafitti on someones front porch of a nice house. On the face it makes you feel strong and self rightous but the reality is that you are weak and a coward or you would put your name on it and hold your life up to inspection by others. Of course it is the realization of what that public view of you and your life would be that makes it impossible for you to do that. So, I suspect you will continue to post attacks on the wives and husbands of politicians and slander individuals re their rumored health conditions and talk about things you only hope are true. But after you have slammed me for writing this be honest with yourself. If only for a minute. You know Im right. And you also know that many who read your ramblings know the kind of person you are and although we may not dislike you as a person understand your motive and disregard your speculative attacks much as we would a person of diminished capacity who blurts our obscenities in public. We dont like it but we can excuse it because you just can't help yoursel. So don't put too much stock in your misplaced belief that we put any value into anything you say that is of a message of hate. I can tell you this about Ward 10. The voters in that area past a bond issue a few years dedicated for the building of a football complex. The voters were promised two fields, parking, lights, bathrooms and a concession stand. They got a half a million dollars for the project. Along comes butch Lindsay and the project cets cut to one junior size field and a gravel parking lot. Where did the rest of the money go Butch? Gee, that's a nice new harley Davidson motorcycle you're riding.

I have a small Shi Tzu dog. He stands at the window and barks furiously at the trucks and cars and people that pass the window. The vehicles and the people keep moving until they have vanished from sight and I think my dog is convinced that he ran them off. He is very proud of his accomplishment and even struts arround and occassionally issues a final warning bark to declare his victory and control of his universe.
I think we have the same phenomenon here. These nasty mean people bark at posters with different views and call them names and attack their sexual orientation, intellegence, patriotism, and religious affiliation and the intelligent people say "fuck it" and leave. Then the attackers revel in their victory over the forces of dissent. Woof woof.

Perspective and Passing Thru are right. I deserve part of the blame and I accept it.
This blog started out in good faith to be a forum for the unfettered exchange of ideas on resolving the crises looming in Alexandria City Government.
Lately it has degenerated into a name-calling insult fest where no one's ideas are respected if they differ from ours. We are intolerant, myopic, and, like Perspective says, just plain mean.
The net result is that we stifle ideas and debate and turn off the very people we need to inspire to participate and vote.
Alexandria is turning to crap and we think our job is to flush the toilet. I don't mind adults acting childish but I agree that Rome is burning and I doubt that we will have another chance to put out the flames. Myron Lawson is giving away our money like water and we are fighting about evolution. It just seems hopeless.
Anyway, count me out. I am going to try to find some people who really want to make a difference instead of just hear themselves talk. If this blog grows up, I'll be back becasue there were some good thinkers on here.
My thanks to Perspective and Passing Thru for trying to inject some sanity and kindness in this place. I hope they will eventually return also and I hope they like what they see.
I totally agree with your statements and it is unfortunate that this blog has turned to that. I for one have posted in response to some of that name calling about a particular official because I felt the name calling was unwarranted and ridiculous. Unfortunately it was met with more utterly disgusting and hateful statements. I wish that this could get back to the discussing of change which will of course involve people saying their dislikes or problems with particular officials that maybe I happen to respect or believe to be doing a fair job. That is fine and what this blog is for but I wish the hateful and disgusting comments about people could ease up a bit.
The opinion of a person on political matters is needed and for the most part respected, but I find it hard to listen, read, or respect anyone who throws terrible accusations/childish-hateful names around. Your opinion and character are put to the lowest level. Don't like or approve all you want but leave the schoolyard insults/name calling hateful disrespect at home.

If you want CIVIL discourse, you created the wrong type of blog. Force people to identify themselves, take responsibility for their asinine comments, and the BS will stop. As soon as you take the accountability out of the posts, they become nothing more than rumor.
Years ago the Town Talk had a column called “Sound Off” where anyone could spout off with anything without signing their name. That feature declined in quality just like this blog has. The weekly newspaper in Tioga is doing the same thing but they call it “Backtalk.” It’s a great formula for selling newspapers, but doesn’t help solve many problems.
newbie: It may be hard to believe, but I guess we are in basic agreement on the Pineville ED issue. Call me disillusioned - I still recall the Union Tank thing and all those that took credit for it, while some of those that really deserved the credit went unmentioned (i.e. Cleco who helped put and hold the deal together while the Alexandria City Council almost screwed it up), maybe I am reluctant to let the Pineville administration take full credit for the developments for that reason. Compared to the reign of Baden and Deslatte, Fields has done a much better job, but then again, look what you are comparing his performance to - nobody has ever accused Baden of being an economic developer and Leo, well, he was hardly in office long enough to make any determination of job performance.
I also agree on the future center of economic development in North Rapides, especially considering some of the major projects that are in the works and the population shift. Within the next decade it may not matter much that Rome is burning, we'll just sit on the banks of the Tigris and watch.
Scarlett: I doubt that newbie is Dupree - the latter is hardly capable of breathing and chewing gum concurrently, while the former exhibits a certain sophistication. While I may not agree with him on some/many issues, I would consider newbie a formidable adversary in a battle of the wits - Rich is lacking the equipment for such an endeavor.
On the Randolph issue - I believe that the public would have a right to know if Ned was incapacitated, which he does not seem to be. He may have bad days, where he is not as lucid as he used to be, but at the same time, he hardly appears incapable of making his own decisions. His "keepers" are those that feed him incomplete and/or incorrect information, in the process making him look like a fool at times. Ned is a brilliant man and Alexandria was lucky to have him at the helm for as long as he has been. Now it is time for a change and I think he deserves to be let go with his dignity intact. As we have said before, the problem in Alexandria stems largely from the council (or should I say stems from the council at large?), not the mayor.
I like the ABM approach, but think it would backfire as a racial slur, rather than a quip on his non-performance.

They have a new newspaper in the Pineville/Tioga area. I think they cover some of Grant too. It’s a weekly and they have been publishing for about a year.

I think we are severly underestimating the problem that is Kelvin Sanders. His loyalty appears to be to those that brung him: the Council. I think that fact puts the mayor at great and constant risk of being totally sold out. Is there a solution?

If Delores Brewer is in fact his candidate, he could make her look like a dragon slayer and I think that's what Brewer will need. Really, we have asked you to confine your ruthless attacks toward or about Scarlett. I don't think that I agree with you about Ned. If Ned/Brewer could really strike some sparks I think the community would rally.
I realize that you think we need a complete purge but that is not likely to happen. We still can, however, make some major changes and over time, cure our community.
Well at least the name calling and false accusations ceased for a little while. But I knew the previous posters that want to crucify people would come back. Ned is not an embarrasment to the state. I see legislators, republican and democrat, and past officials as well as all of our elected officials in Washington and at the Capitol as well as nonelected officials who always say wonderful things about Ned, always ask how he is in public and private. From Shreveport to New Orleans to D.C. he has a ton of respect so that argument for you is gone. Now does that mean he should still be mayor after this term-no, and the voters will decide that.
Hating Ned is really not a productive approach. It is your right to dislike anyone that you want but what we are looking for here is solutions to a widely perceived problem. If you don't want Ned to be the mayor then who do you want and how can we get him or her elected. We really don't care who you hate. We want your help to fix our city.

Obviously, the person who posted the message about Ranson is very close to him. He didn't even know how to spell his name! I know that Ranson was frustrated (but not disgusted) by the direction the council was taking the city. His reason for moving, however, was not out of disgust. He realized that his most important job was being a father - not a councilman. Ranson and his wife found a home where they could raise their young child. His Barrister Street home did not provide the security needed for his child (I think it's a son). Congratulations to him for getting his priorities straight. He would have definitely made a great mayor. He is honest, smart and doesn't take any crap off anyone.
My God! Whoever has been talking about Pineville being run by an assistant was not kidding. I just read the editorial in the Town Talk and according to DUPREE he has a plan for growth in Pineville. This is laughable. But I sure am glad he is going to "teach the rest of the parish how to do it." Mayor Clarence Fields should be embarrassed it makes him look very much like Dupree is the Mayor. I did not realize it until now . Who is this Dupree character anyway?
Has the question of why Harold Chambers and Darrell Williamson lost their jobs ever been answered? Wasn't there another high level employee who lost his/her job around the same time?
Earlier someone said that Alexandria officials were getting cozy with Cleco again. Are they going to get all friendly and decide they don't need the lawsuit to work out their problems? I just read the editorial you were talking about .Some arrogance but they do not say exactly what Dupree or the City of Pineville has actually done. It appears that all the neighborhoods they list have nothing to do with the city or are not even in the city limits. Our Alexandria officials need to take a lesson on how to get credit for stuff they have no clue about.

I am told that the depositions in the CLECO and Three Amigos cases pretty well smoke. I know that one of the attornies in the CLECO case delivered a complete set to the Town Talk and Billie Gunn has referred to them in the past. The ones that generate the most interest and have the most potentially serious legal consequences are the statment about and by Charles F. Smith. I hope this stuff breaks before the elections.

Misinformation and deception on part of his "trusted" advisors may be closer to the truth. Now let's keep in mind that these are people that he has trusted for many years - looks like they took the first chance to exploit him, feed him BS and let him look like a fool at times. Since micro-managment is not an option in a city the size of Alexandria, he has to rely on department heads and advisors to run the show, that seems to be where most of the problem started. If any of you anonymi have a problem with that, call city hall and get an appointment - if you have the guts, talk to him and let him know what you think is going on. Newbie: Yes, Shaw got the short end of the credit and appreciation stick as much as Cleco did. Wonder why the purchase of tens of thousands of dollars worth of cotton to clear that field was never a big deal to anybody that didn't write the check?
Calvary Industries was, I believe, another example where the deal makers ended up with less credit than the bystanders. Again, I will give you the favorable comparison to previous administrations, where ED was mainly development of the economic and social benefits of the individuals close to and in the administration.

First I must say there are way too many "anonymous" posters to reply to. How hard is it to make up a name? There was a sensible letter to the editor this morning about the guy who made a resolution not to vote for anyone presently in office. In our case, it will be difficult since there is not presently anyone NEW to vote FOR. Well, good saturday morning everyone in cenlatown! I noticed in the TT, that Chuck Fowler was fined for doing business with CLECO. This was after he received a letter from then CIty Attorney Nunnally that it was okay to do so. Also, Fowler reeceived the job after competitively bidding with other companies. A few questions come to mind.
Who turned Fowler in and why?
Can Harry Silver sell clothes to employees of companies that do business with the city? e.g. lawyers, engineers, etc.
Can Myron sell insurance to the same group?
How can Marshall work for Patel when the Holiday Inn is trying to get a sweetheart lease from the City?
How can C.F. Smith serve when we pay the Sheriff to collect city property taxes?
Does anyone NOT know the answers to the above questions?
One more question .... How long are we going to put up with this?

Whether you like Fowler or not, give him credit. He tried to get the city to secure a gas contract when the price was right. Instead, he was overruled by Lawson and Smith. They were trying to cut a deal with their buddies William Barron and Jeff Richardson. Do you think any money might have changed hands? Now we, the citizens of Alexandria, are paying for their greed and callous disregard for their constituents.
Of course Harry Silver and Myron Lawson can sell products or services to employees of companies contracting with the city but it has to be an arms length transaction and their can't be any side deals or influence peddling. One of the problems in the printing contract bid business is the customer and the vendor can get together and design bid specifications that only that vendor can fill.
The Marshall and Charles Smith connetion to Patel are certainly a conflict and unlawful. That is why Smith was lying about his connection to Patel via the bar, hotel, and his girlfriend. Marshall obviously is violating the law.
Charlie Nunnally sold copiers and supplies to the city for years so he may have a rather liberal view of governmental ethics.

Agreed - but the problem there is proving anything, i.e. was the bidder really the best suited or was there any side deals. One would expect that Fowler would recognize the problem and not even bid or for Cleco to not accept the bid. Then again, he's not just printing for Cleco, I'm sure there is others that he does work for and they ultimately bid on city contracts.
And is the Dumar thing in Pineville a even more severe ethics violation? If that's legit, then I'm surprised that the city council members don't open businesses that cater to various other city needs and give themselves the go ahead - surely something is afoul here ...
And of course there is the Ceasar's Wife thing where one must avoid even the appearance of impropriety and there is the problem. If Harry Silver sells a suit and puts 3 shirts and an aligator belt in the bag, who knows. By the way, the council has been particularly well dressed lately.

The personal attacks against Randolph and his wife are not really of any probative value to anyone on here but does fully show the cowardace of someone who would not sign their true name to such nonpolitical assaults. I have a PHD degree in psychology and that doesnt make me anyone of importance other than someone who has studied people and the cause and effect of their actions. You fit the classic profile of someone who has been an underachiever who had bigger dreams for yourself but is disappointed in decisons they made or for actions they didnt have the courage to make that they now belive would have made them "somebody". You find yourself very bitter and feel like you have no choice but to blame others for keeping you down all the while pushing yourself down by attacking others believing that it somehow settles the score against the fantsized masses of successful people you hold responsible for your status or lack thereof. If your comments were political in nature then I would have a different opinion but its clear that it is more about psychologically stickin it to people who have been successful on some level that you have not and thus validating your otherwise mundane and undistinguishable life. The idea that you can deminish the individual or discredit their achievements makes you feel better about your failures. Its ok if it makes you think it makes you feel better but all studies ive ever seen would conclude that it ulitmtely just makes you feel worse about yourself and thus gives you a greater need to put others down NOT on a political level which would be somewhat objective but on a personal level. It is the pinnacle of arrogance to assume that the mayer's total and permanent disablilty is not the someone that we didn't elect and don't know and have no recourse against is doing our mayoring. My recommendation would not be for the council to remove Ned, but rather for his family to do so, thereby possibly salvaging any dignity he may have left.

1. Being the incumbent will not win him the position in the fall. My thought is that it will cinch his demise.
2. Maybe it would encourage a few of the far too many complaisant voters to get involved.
