To Lamar White, Jr...you were much too kind to Myron in your assessment of his care for the citizens of Alexandria. I don't actually think Myron cares one whit about anyone but himself and his own ilk. He's pretty much made that clear to us already.

Dear OutsideAlsoLooking,

I'm not in the business of making person attacks on anyone, regardless of whether or not I believe in their political philosophy. I think that it should be evident that I am not a fan of the current city council's agenda, and I hope to affect change through sticking to the issues. Also, I don't know Mr. Lawson; the last time I spoke with him was ten years ago.

But I appreciate your response and I will take your comments into suggestion.

I deleted the previous post, because it contained sensitive information. If you happened to read it, well, you have to understand that I'm not quite ready for death threats. But here's the response to anonymous person who thinks I am full of myself:

Hey Anonymous,

This has got to be awkward for you, but I read this blog. And I am, in fact, the same Lamar White, Jr you think is "full of himself." AWKWARD. Shhh... he's standing right behind you!

But thanks for reading. I'll continue to update the blog, regardless of whether or not anonymous current members of the city government and/or their staff write disparaging and personally insulting remarks about me on a public forum. I'm cool with it. And you know why?

Because you haven't given me one reason to think that what I am saying is factually incorrect. Again, you'd rather attack the person rather than the substance of their statements. It's probably worked for you in the past, but it's not going to work against me.

Anonymous said...

Lamar, your letter and your reasoning are impeccable. I just do not know why you would subject yourself to all of the abuse, disrespect, and hostility on this blog. Most of these participants generate far more heat than light. What do you hope to gain from this barrage of impersonal nastiness?

Anonymous said...

Lamar, and the rest of you for that matter: We can all write eloquent crap on this blog or even in the TT, but it does not matter. Only power matters. The power to bring honesty to City government can only be obtained if you step up and get elected. Lamar, step up to the plate or simply return to oblivion and watch your City burn. If you really care, run against the serpent and make a difference.

Anonymous said...

Dear Anonymous,
You appear to have very high standards for the rest of us. What office are you going to run for? Why don't you take Myron on?

Anonymous said...

I don't live in the City, that's why. By the way, have you seen the billboards all over town? "This is Joe Fuller, welcome to MY CITY"

Anonymous said...

The Joe Fuller billboards are advertising for the Louisiana State Police Jury Convention. Now thats got to be a lively bunch. I bet they will have workshops on stuff like diggin ditches, gradin roads, and killin skeeters. Apparently the convention is is being held here and since Joe represents part of the city thay put his mugshot on the signs. Looks to me like he is running for office. Hmmmmmm

Blogger said...

"Lamar, and the rest of you for that matter: We can all write eloquent crap on this blog or even in the TT, but it does not matter."

I beg to differ, but you are more than entitled to feeling that the articulation and explanation of one's beliefs are, somehow, politically impotent. It's a strangely self-defeating belief, and I find that it is contrary to the ways in which political power is attained. Sure, money helps, and it's commonly argued that a candidate with the most money usually wins. However, this argument, believe it or not, does not hold up under scrutiny. Money helps, but first and foremost, one's words speak loudest.

"Only power matters."
Again, in order to make your argument logical, you'd have to believe that words don't matter. And you're telling me I should run... so obviously you feel that my words are somehow powerful. Maybe.

"The power to bring honesty to City government can only be obtained if you step up and get elected."
I'm 23. I walk with a limp. And some people just don't like the idea of me. I think I'll pass. For now.

"Lamar, step up to the plate or simply return to oblivion and watch your City burn."

You mean burn again? We already burned to the ground during the Civil War. And you know what? I am doing what I can do to "step up to the plate." I'm sorry you feel differently, but like I said before, I think I can affect more change elsewhere.

"If you really care, run against the serpent and make a difference."

I appreciate your endorsement, but I hardly see why I have to run for office in order to prove that I really care. That's just a backhanded way of calling me a coward. Although I hate to harp on the same point over and over again, I'm the one who signed his name to his opinion. I appreciate the suggestions, ANONYMOUS.

Blogger said...

PS: I've never been oblivious, so I'm not sure how to locate this "oblivion" to which you believe I should return.

Anonymous said...

Lamar, you certainly appear to have an affinity for random nasty.

Blogger said...

Sorry. I don't see how directly responding on a public forum to what was said to me on a public forum is "nasty" or "random."

Blogger said...

I'm going to respond to one more comment, then I'm going to sit back for a while. Because I shouldn't be in the position in which I feel it necessary to respond to every single comment. If you would like to speak with me, I will respond to any and all e-mails at lamarw@gmail.com:

"Lamar, your letter and your reasoning are impeccable. I just do not know why you would subject yourself to all of the abuse, disrespect, and hostility on this blog. Most of these participants generate far more heat than light. What do you hope to gain from this barrage of impersonal nastiness?"

I understand that Alexandria is a small city, and I recognize that we also possess a unique political climate. Maybe I am taking a risk. Maybe it is true that I am subjecting myself to quite a bit of ill will. And perhaps it is even possible that when I choose to directly respond to this ill will, I am setting myself up for additional hostility. This is probably due to my own ignorance.

But I have read every single entry on this blog and I've been reading the paper every single day. On any given day, I speak with between 30 and 50 people who are looking for affordable homes. In other words, I feel reasonably certain that I know the issues currently facing my hometown, and because of my daily experience, I have formed an opinion of these issues. Instead of being forced into anonymity, I recognize that I am in a position to speak openly. I am saddened that others, particularly those in government, feel pressured into debating these real issues in an anonymous forum.

The truth is that this forum is not for me. I want to work with people on an individual level, and this forum is not made for that type of exchange.

Many of those who regularly contribute to this forum are individuals who would likely lose their job if I were ever elected. I simply wouldn't have patience for entrenched nepotism. And they probably know this. And although I am not in any position to run for office right now, my presence in this discussion somehow makes me a candidate, and therefore, I am being attacked in e-mails and blogs by those who feel threatened.

The funny thing is: I have a good idea of who is behind this.

Thank you for your advice. I will continue to read this blog, and again, if anyone wants to speak with me, feel free to e-mail me or post on my blog, cenlamar.blogspot.com.

Thrive,

Lamar

Lamar, what I meant by your having an affinity for random nasty was that you are a glutton for pointless abuse. It just appears to me that people agree with your ideas but some resent your good fortune, success, or family connections. How can you intelligently respond to that kind of ugliness? And why would you even try?

No response required or expected - I just didn't want you to mistake my concern for criticism.

Anonymous said...

Lamar,

Being "23 and walking with a limp" are not barriers to running for office. Furthermore, the fact that some people may not like you is not a barrier, that's part of politics. For whatever reason, 30% of people just don't vote for a person no matter how well they perform. Don't let these minor hinderances disuade you.

Anonymous said...

One has to have resided in the city or district, depending on the office, for 2 full years at the time of qualifying. If Lamar has been in Dallas for a couple years that rules him out. Also, if Lamar has deals going with Harry (30 pieces of) Silver and other downtown "interests", there are potentially conflicts of interest which I hope will become a thing of the past on the new and improved council.

In other words, looks like Lamar is already at the trough. Maybe he will get the water park deal - he could call it "FOR WHITES ONLY".

Anonymous said...

Scarlett, if you think that he is going to unload/develope the downtown Weiss & Goldring building for a "gift certificate" then he is not the naive one here. Watch the Silver/Lawson connection. Harry is Myron's man and that's what he is doing there.

Anonymous said...

HOWEVER, Mr Silver should have done a little checking BEFORE he got on the counsil because state law requires a 2 year seperation period before an elected official can do ANY business with the city...therefore.....the City CAN NOT buy it from Silver until 2 years AFTER he has left office....Arguably , Gaadea is an animal of the City of Alexandria and the same would apply...BUT....not as clear.

Anonymous said...

Isnt Harry about 112 years old?

Anonymous said...

I see what you mean about the 2 year rule. That must be why we were unable to buy Regions Bank or the Jakes Bldg.

Anonymous said...

Rick Ranson did recuse himself from all the discussion and negotiations regarding the purchase of the Regions Bank Building. The City did not buy it from Rick either, they bought it from his employer.

The Jakes Building was purchased from a company partially owned by Wayne Vollman who happens to be the brother and law of one Harold Chambers. To my knowledge neither Chambers nor Vollman were ever on the City Council.

Anonymous said...

What if Harry were to sell his building to a group of "investors" (none have surfaced in the past 35 years, even when the Bentley was thriving and Charlie Damico had his establishment) and they were to sell it to the city or GAEDA. Wouldn't that be a stroke of luck and a coincidence??

In two years you won't even remember the screw job.

Anonymous said...

Gee, I don't know. Is anyone actively looking for investors for the W&G building?

Anonymous said...

Last I heard the W & G building had so many structrural problems that the most practicle use was to tear it down for parking.

Anonymous said...

Hey Scarlett, feel free to verify or negate my information, but I think your icon Brewer has decided not to run for mayor. Also, does anyone have access to a mayor's race poll rumored to have been commissioned by Albin Provosty?

Anonymous said...

Spanky the serpent slayer for mayor.

Anonymous said...

Spanky Fuller says "Welcome to my City".

Anonymous said...

If Delores has suddenly taken her name out contention that means that Randolph has other plans and her numbers did not come out too favorably. Maybe Albin is running. I heard that Rod Noles was in the process of divesting himself of his potentially conflicting interests and will go for it. More Sams signs everyday.

Anonymous said...

Rumors abound. Is it possible that Ned and Hillary have put a stop to Delores. Delores's premature announcement (before Ned made his plans public) shows either inside information or very very very bad manners on Delores's part.

The community is screaming for a clean sweep - a purge - out with the old.

Anonymous said...

Damn shame. I really like the "Delores" we have been seeing for the last 45 days. I hope we can find somebody with her spunk and talent.

Anonymous said...

Maybe she has had the chance to see what Alexandria 2007 looks like and wants out. She can rent the moving van after I do and after lots of MY friends do. ....Monroe comes to Cenla.

Anonymous said...

If Hillary had taken a page out of Nancy's Memoirs, Ned wouldn't be in the public pickle he's in. There is really no 'inside' info on Ned's future - he is in latter stages of Alzheimer’s - he CAN NOT run! So why won’t he announce? Because his caretakers can’t keep him on point with the information, because sometimes HE believes he will run, because Hillary is afraid of acknowledging that her kingdom has fallen.

HEY! LOOK -- Your CENLA local governments at work--as usual...

Glenmora residents outraged with mayor, council

By Tom Bonnette
tbonnette@thetowntalk.com
(318) 487-6340

GLENMORA -- Residents here packed Town Hall to voice outrage over increases in natural gas, water, and sewage bills and perceived mismanagement of town funds during a standing-room only hearing Tuesday night.

"Let's just call a spade a spade," resident Pete Strother said as he questioned the Town Council about its delinquent gas bills. He also expressed concern over increased utility rates.

Strother later called for the resignation of Mayor Tyrone Doyle and the entire Glenmora Town Council.

"What has happened to the money?" he asked. "Why are we having trouble in meeting our obligations whether it's water, gas or whatever it is?"
A review of gas bills in recent months revealed that the town is delinquent in paying its bills for October, November and December. The town paid its January bill, but no information was available for the February bill.

Doyle assured residents that the town's gas supply would not be cut off by its Baton Rouge supplier, the Louisiana Municipal Gas Authority.

In January, the town raised its gas rates from a monthly flat rate of $13.50 to $58.50. Water rates also increased from a flat rate of $13.15 to $22.74.

"A lot of people are concerned. This is hurting the elderly and putting our schools in jeopardy and our homes," said Strother.

Past due charges
Residents also voiced concerns over past due charges for bills that they say were paid in full.
"If the council won't vote to take this off my bill, then tell me where to go. I am talking about my bill. It might not seem like a lot, but it is when you have a high gas bill," said John Baker, who complained about a $50 overdue fee in a heated exchange with the council.

Another resident, Ruthie Fox, also complained of an incorrectly assessed overdue charge. She previously provided the mayor with a copy of her check cashed by the town showing the bill paid in full before the due date.

Questionable expenses
Some residents spoke of alleged government improprieties from a June 2005 audit performed by Louisiana Legislative Auditor Steve J. Theriot. That audit highlights the mayor's undocumented credit-card purchases, hotel rooms and cash advances.
The audit calls into question whether those transactions were for public purposes, as well as a $300 per month unvouchered expense allowance granted in 1991 that has gone unreported to the Internal Revenue Service.

In 2004, the mayor received a $3,600 personal expense allowance that went unreported on his wage and tax statement to the IRS, the audit states. Doyle has reimbursed the town $344 for five hotel stays and $617 for his unpaid utility service bills, the audit states. Doyle accumulated the past due utility bills from July 2004 to February 2005 without ever having his services cut off.

Doyle was not available immediately to comment on the audit's findings and to respond to the residents' allegations. A residential telephone listing for Doyle is disconnected.

"It's criminal what's going on," said resident Jerry Gorum. "All I know is that we are in the worse shape we have been in my 65 years of living here."

1. Is somebody in charge of this blog?

2. Can anything be done to reduce the load time?

3. If you find an interesting newpaper article, perhaps you could just give us a link instead of reproducing the whole goddam uninteresting article here??!!?

Anonymous said...

Cenla politics is about to get interesting. Now I hear that someone is going to announce against the Sheriff within the next few days. Just another rumor? Can we post the results of the mayor's poll on here or are they copyrighted? So many questions, so little competence!

Anonymous said...

Albin may have burned the only copy. He fears Fuller. By the way, welcome to "My City".

Anonymous said...

I am going to run for mayor and fire everyone of you idiots who work in the planning department and the utility department. I am going to vote for Lamar White for whatever and never vote for John Sams because he looks like that big fat Yoda (?) thing off of Star Wars.

Anonymous said...

To that last poster: Man, what are you drinking?

Anonymous said...

OKAY...I will post links from now on. But mu exhusand's mother lives in Glenmora and I'm gald that The Town Talk is finally looking into this stuff.

Anonymous said...

Well you should be interested because if you are from Glenmora, your exhusband's mother is probably your aunt.

Anonymous said...

You mean "Jabba"?

Anonymous said...

Don't know why all these rumors start about Delores, but she IS running. I guess there are just some wishful thinkers out there but I didnt know that most of them could even spell much less operate a computer.

Anonymous said...

I think that is incorrect. I think that Delores's plug has been pulled by the Randolphs. I think that they are pissed at her premature launch during the period that Ned and Hillary are trying to create suspense and get the best "way out" deal possible. But who knows?

Anonymous said...

Nope...she's running. Get used to it. And she wins. Sams loses Swimsuit, talent and question and answer portions of the competition and comes in last in Ms Congeniality portions of the affair.

Anonymous said...

Pray tell, how can she declare as a candidate when her boss, the current mayor, the encumbent, has not let his intentions or plans be known. I'm telling you, she ain't running. Also she had (for better or worse) was the Randolph connection and she dumped on that.

SEE SAMS RUN! RUN RUN RUN! RUN SAMS RUN!

Anonymous said...

If Brewer is out does that mean that Sams is the GOP standard barer or is there somebody else in the wings? I hear Noles noise and Dudley Hixon talk.

Anonymous said...

IF she is out with NEd ...Why is she still working at City Hall?...Lies, rumors and wishes from people who don't know

Anonymous said...

I have a stomach of steel and I can take alot of stuff on this blog, but please, please, please never again mention John Sams in a swimsuit.

Anonymous said...

The mayoral run-off is going to be a Democrat v. Republican slugfest, and yes, its going to get very partisan. I see Sams v. Fuller, and if I'm right, its gonna be one of the best political theatres you have ever seen.

Anonymous said...

If you want something to think about, check out Lamar's blog. He and Myron have a love fest over the future of downtown. It would appear that Lamar is now firmly ensconced in the Lawson Fan Club. Just what we need. I see a consulting contract in his future.

Did anyone see Pinevilles very own.Counselman .Kelvin Dorn on the news preaching to the poor people in Alexandria about how the muslims and black folk oughta get along in Alexandria? Whats wrong, isnt there any black people or muslims in Pineville to lecture? Hes running for something when have you ever seen him interested in anything in Alex before?

Anonymous said...

They all think they know better than us since they all went in UNOPPOSED...wwwwoooooo

Anonymous said...

RICH, MY MAN! Great work. The new hotel and convention complex that you attracted to Pineville is going to change the convention and tourist landscape in a big way. No wonder your constituents love you and the mayor. Keep up the good work.

Anonymous said...

Attracted?

Anonymous said...

Yes.attracted. Like in he took a phone call from someone wanting to put a hotel on the northside of the river, he gave em "statistical information" and announced their locating here FOR them. Thanks so much for attracting them to locate outside of Pineville city Limits but close enough to take credit. Oh I guess we should thank the Police Jury and Butch Lindzy and Bordelon too because they are the police Jurors for the area where the 100 room motel will locate and they heard about the people looking for a place and therefore "worked to attract them here " too. We can hardly wait!

For those of you living in District 22 (Tommy Wright's old seat)check this article out about Tony Owens. Seems he has been naughty in the past!! I don't think I would vote for him considering he is supposed to be a conservative repub. Ha!!

Here ya go!! Nice!!

Potential HD22 Shocker gives Democrats Hope

LPNS-

State Democrat operatives are “buzzing” about new potentially damaging information that has surfaced against Republican frontrunner Tony K. Owens.

Divorce records recently unearthed from 28th District Court in LaSalle Parish have revealed a violent side to Owens. It seems that Owens’ second ex-wife won a restraining order against the Republican candidate during their divorce proceedings after he continuously harassed her and she feared for her safety.

The Democrats have also been quietly planning to make Owen’s marital status an issue in the general election. They are certain that the conservative central Louisiana district will have problems embracing a candidate who has been divorced so many times.

The 22nd House District was once considered by Democrats as a lost cause after watching President Bush and David Vitter carry the district by large margins, but with this new damaging information coming to surface Democratic party leaders are gaining confidence by the day.

House District 22 covers Grant, LaSalle, Winn and a small portion Rapides Parish. Election Day is April 1

Hell...the fact that he was married to and evidently likes WOMAN...makes him better than the last representative and makes him as moral or more than most in hist district

Anonymous said...

well i was thinking there is probably more than one candidate and maybe one who hadn't harasses anyone that you could vote for. I agree that all are better than the last but I don't believe this guy cuts it compared to some other people in the race.

Anonymous said...

harassed-sorry for the typo

Anonymous said...

I agree that anyone is better than Wright, but I don't think I could vote for this guy. This revelation is pretty bad and from what I hear that isn't the only dirt in his closet which is pretty scary. I live in the district and vote republican most of the time, but I know that I will be voting for a pro-business conservative who doesn't have restraining orders against him. But, to each his own.

Anonymous said...

It ain't so until she says it's so. Ned still considers himself a contender. Is she running against Ned. Maybe she can be Sam's Chief of Staff.

Anonymous said...

Got it ass-backwards. Ned is the incumbant, can run again, and is Delores's employer, friend and mentor. Ned has not said that he is not running and therefore the presumption, until otherwise negated, is that he will/shall/might/could run. So you think Delores is going to try to cut him out (not to mention that she needs his and Hillary's blessing) E tu Delores. Scarlett be all wet. Nobody has heard the word from Delores. That's what counts, Scarlett.

Anonymous said...

Got that right. If Delores puts Ned in the shadows there will be a Joe Fuller sign in Hillary's front yard. Delores needs to keep her resume on file with John Sams.

Anonymous said...

The issue is not who Ned HAS NOT told. Ned would not know me from Myron's butler but the fact is that Ned has not made his intentions known publically and that is the benchmark. What Ned has whispered to his priest doesn't matter. We gave him the job, he owes us the courtesy of an announcement and I believe that his handlers know that. And Scarlett, that wet ain't "rain".

Anonymous said...

Lamar and Lawson are in a lovefest? Lamar you just lost whatever thin support you ever had. Selling out little boy? Damn shame. On the Dorn thing, he's running against Dixon for Curtis's seat in the House. I'd put money on it that he's Myron's boy in the race. Myron apparently sees Dixon as a huge threat to his throne.

Anonymous said...

Don't be suprised if the slithering has over $200,000 in his campaign warchest before qualifiying.

Blogger said...

Okay. I'll set it straight. No, Myron and I are not in a "lovefest." We met. We spoke. We disagreed on a few things. We agreed on a few things. I prefer to speak about positive developments, rather than rant about the issues on which we disagree. If this means that we're in a "lovefest," then I'd hate to know your definition of objectivity. The truth is that we all have to work together in order to get something done, and I appreciate Mr. Lawson's willingness to listen to me. And I'm not sure why this is such a crime.

Blogger said...

That said, I will also rant about the issues on which we disagree... just in a different context. See, it's important for me not to be too personal. I genuinely believe that most people want what's best for their community; the central problem is prioritization.

And egos.

Anonymous said...

Hey Lamar...we get it..thanks for participating. Good Govt is government thats GOOD for you . It will be interesting to see what good things come from your new "friend".

Anonymous said...

Now it all makes sense why you felt so strongly about Putting your NAME on your comments. How else to broker such a relationship if the person doesnt know who you are.

Anonymous said...

Anyone who is interested should read Lamars personal webpage entries detailing everything LAMAR. I think a better understanding of the person, his blog and all other editorials , emails and unsolicited opinions from Lamars world will be much clearer. And yes Mr White we now know who you are. You are important , you have value.

Anonymous said...

Lamar, I apologize for our apparent lack of objectivity. If, however, a person is generally if not universally perceived as a self-serving, dishonest opportunist and has a history of injury and insult to our community fisc, progress, and image, you naturally contaminate your position in our eyes by citing this person as your authority and information source. So you are catching an undeserved ration of shit not for who you are, or what you do, or what you believe, but in whom you believe, respect, and promote.

Many of us believe, on a rational AND intuitive basis, that you can stack trendy downtown boutiques and high-priced condos up to heaven and what you will have are failed boutiques and empty condos. The reason for that is a well-deserved lack of confidence in the administration and council.

We think we need a radical and complete change in the cast and you are simply trying to tune up the third act.

I fully expect to visit your blog and read about what a complete moron I am and how I miss the whole message, use improper syntax and spell poorly, and you very well may be right. But consider for one moment, the possibility that there is another view that deserves at least your thoughtful evaluation.

Our opportunity for economic and cultural growth and progress is absolutely dependant on a change in not just the identity but the quality of our leadership and government. That will be the world that lets your vision turn to reality.

And yes, I am seeking office, so I'm not just "ranting".

Lamar, you better work on your ability to judge character or you will be just another contractor in the back pocket. Try to decipher those who have the City's best interest at heart vs. those who have only their own financial and power building interest at heart. Your young, I guess its O.K. to be snookered every now and then. Just don't let them drag you into their web where you will surely be ensnarled and lost forever.

Anonymous said...

Lamar obviously has a lot more spare time than I do!!!! Oh to be young again.

Anonymous said...

Well...look what I found on the Council Agenda for this Tuesday:

42) To override the Mayor’s veto of Ordinance No. 87-2006 pertaining to a contract with Trinity Capital Resources relative to consulting and professional services regarding Automated Meter Reading Systems.

This is the multi-million dollar Contract that Hobbs pushed through the utility committee for his "friend" without getting proposals from any other consultants. At least the mayor had the balls to veto it. WE ARE BEING RAPED!!!

Anonymous said...

Is Billy Gunn still with the Town Talk? Somebody posted that he was on vacation but I haven't seen any of his stories lately and this Hobbs thing is just exactly what he is expert as exposing. Lately I have been seeing 13 year old reporters at the meetings.

All the Town Talk seems to care about now is selling their little books and pamphlets and baby pictures and similar bullshit supercommercial nonjournalistic stuff. They are starting to look like the Thrifty Nickel but without the Nickel's credibility or integrity. Go figure.

Anonymous said...

O.K. I am going to jump in here. Let's take the last post and ask this....how do we report this story in the media on the possible link between Hobbs and this contract? Suggestions are welcome.

Anonymous said...

I think the dialogue that best reveals Lamar in his youth and purity is the posting on his site that places great weight on what they decide to call the Weiss & Goldrings store bldg. He and his colleagues begin to focus on a hokey historic Nact. identity, St. Denis. Yeah guys! I think that will do it. You need to order some lobby furniture and hire a doorman.

No support for "Watergate" or "Cabildo".

Anonymous said...

Actually, the information on the Hobbs deal is out there - Chuck Fowler made a record in the committee meeting and the council meeting that this was an improper selection process without any objective criteria for this consultant ant no record or history of this outfit and its performance in this area. It was so outrageous that 30 pieces of Silver joined Chuck's oppostion. The difference is that Chuck was operating on principle and Silver was doing show business with Myron's approval. Myron will let you act responsible as long as he gets his way. At least we know how Hobbs will finance his campaign. We need to make sure he has to run and face up to his records.

That being said the key is Billy Gunn. If he is still arround he will expose it. If he is gone and we have to rely on Shawunda, we need to hope that the Thrifty Nickel picks it up.

Anonymous said...

Wait, I think I understand the previous inquiry a liitle better. Perhaps some stalwart investigative reporter will review the committe meeting record (particularly the Fowler and Brewer comments) and the council meeting transcript. Then they could find someone on the 2nd floor that is running for mayor on a platform of courage and change, get her away from the City Attorney, and get the real story. This sort of cutting-edge journalism may require actually leaving the studio or office. But hell, if Dustin Hoffman and Robert Redford did it, you can too.

Anonymous said...

Lamar, if you are sitting on your veranda and all the dogs in your neighborhood start barking and howling, maybe they smell something that totally escapes you. I suggest you trust your dog before you trust your council.

Anonymous said...

Has anyone seen Sams' for Mayor picture? Jabba. Too much flesh. Why can't he stick to the school board? He didn't do such a great job there. HE WILL NOT GET MY VOTE. I will vote for a flying monkey before I vote for him.

Delores met with a local neighborhood group last week and her lack of information about the city finances in general and the utility crises in particular amazed the attendees. I heard she was stupid but one would think that she could anticipate questions on the city finances and the utility bills. She didn't. She said that it was complicated and she would be the first to admit that she really didn't understand what all that stuff on the utility bill meant.

If you don't want to vote for the fat guy that's your business but I promise we don't need Delores. She is virtually clueless and does not think well on her feet. Fat trumps stupid any day.

Anonymous said...

I have to agree. You can get unfat. You never get unstupid.

Anonymous said...

I disagree completely. If you want to find something to be against Delores or Sams or anyone you can find it. But criticizing her because she did not have detailed information is not a valid basis to be against her..of course unless you were already. A Mayor is about vision and about administration. Thats why they hire people to handle their particular departments. But Im sure you knew that already. I bet Delores would be the kind of Mayor to find out answers to whatever questions or problems there were. At least she didnt give you bullshit answer to act like she knew. I Would give her big points for honesty. Something we have too little of from most politicians. Calling her stupid is nothing more than an opportunity to try to smear someone you arent supporting.

Anonymous said...

Saying Dr. Sams is fat is an unfair meaningless and unkind criticism and simply a cheap shot. Saying Delores lacks a basic understanding of the city finances or the utility bill crises is certainly a valid criticism. To be management level in the administration for 18 years, to become chief of staff, and to have so little command of the most basic information about out city is amazing. Contractors and administrative personnel told me she was not to bright but her display at this neighborhood group is inexcusable. But see what the voters think.

There is a choice other than BS and that is having a clue about what is going on with the city finances. You don't agree? Is she unaware of the police shortage and utility bill stress being placed on everyone? Has she been on Mars?

Anonymous said...

You are right. That was unfair. I am not impressed by Dr. Sams. I have heard that he is a real jerk. Just ask some of the nurses on the floors of the hospitals what they think of him. I personally abhor a politician who just can't stay in the position to which he was elected. He is ugly on the outside as well as on the inside... and while I am at it, the Town Talk is a joke. The reporters can't spell and use proper English. They need a decent copy editor. Let Ned go out in peace. He did a decent job following that crazy guy who put the fish in the swimming pool. I am all for developing downtown. The river could be a shining attraction, and there are so many lovely downtown buildings. Downtown could become a beautiful, clean, and safe area.

Can't argue with that. Peace.

Have any of you filled up your vehicles recently? Utility bills are high because the cost of GAS is high...YES the council missed an opportunity to purchase SOME gas at a lower price last summer BUT we would still have high utility bills due to the prevailing cost of fuel. The REAL problem is that the council and administration are at ODDS! Nothing GOOD is going to happen here until we get back to a strong dedicated capable Mayor (that has a clue) and a council that is more interested in their community than themselves.

There has been much said on this blog that ALL the power is in the council. I disagree! The Mayor has a lot of power and can be very effective if they know how to use it and use it for the good of the community. No question the council as currently composed can make that difficult, but not impossible. We need someone who knows city government, is vested in this community and WANTS to do the RIGHT thing.

Anonymous said...

You, sir or mam, are a moron. The price of "gas" that you put in your car has nothing to do with the price of electricity. Its "natural gas" which generates electicity, not the liquid form. The city's fleecing you with their own cash cow called a government owned utility. Compare your costs with the cost of electricity from CLECO or any other electric company. You getting "hosed" to pay for fishing piers and raises. Also, have you to read the charter. The council has all the power. The mayor is a figure head. For example, look at the Lance Harris thing. If you don't take the puppet master off the council, you lose for another six years. Its as simple as that. A word of caution, don't look into his eyes.

Just talked to a friend who is usually "in the know". He says he heard that Fuller had a huge lead in the Administration mayor's poll, but he can't get his hands on the document. Fuller allegedly getting a big majority of black vote and good chunk of white democrats. Isn't it amazing how such an important piece of work can disappear into thin air when it does't fit the adgenda of the ones who comissioned it?

A poll is a strategy document and the owners have no obligation to release the information to the public, and, infact, seldom do unless the information will create momentum for their objective.

Where is the Brewer Basher this morning. Guess she showed yet again that she is NOT afraid to go against the Counsil. Charles Frederick Smith has one again been exposed as the idiot that he is. Thanks to Delores at least the public will know that she is fighting for them. The vote tomorrow ought to be very interesting. Roosevelt will have to decide whether he wants to run for Mayor or play with the Gang. This might just be the test of Whether he can cross the race line on the next election. Thanks Delores for once again standing up.

Harry has permission to look white as long as it doesn't kill the deal. I hope they tune up the audio on the committee and council meeting. Many will be glued to channel 4.

Anonymous said...

The whole utility meter issue has nothing to do with utility meters. The big prize is the $20 million bond issue that is needed to support such a project. Whenever you have a bond issue, you have lots of FEES. In this case, a portion of the FEES will go to the co-bond counsel Bridgette Brown. (Will somebody remind me who her landlord is?)

There are also FEES that must be paid to the bond broker. In earlier times, this responsibility was given to the lowest bidder. However, anyone who has been following the council knows it will, once again, go to Alan Barksdale. Who, you ask, is Alan Barksdale? He is the bond broker who was suspended for 30 days and fined $5,000 for soliciting "campaign contributions" for certain Alexandria councilmen from potential bonding companies. In other words, "I can get you bond business with the City of Alexandria if you are willing to make contributions for the political campaigns of some of the councilmen." Of course, these "contributions" are never reported.

Sweet, huh?

Anonymous said...

But you could get the same financial advantage if the work went to qualified consultants other than the one favored by Smith. Who gets the contract on the meters has to be important to Smith, et al for some reason other than the bonding generated graft.

Remember that Charles F. Smith has no conflict of interest. His sole interest is the welfare of Charles F. Smith. Nothing could be more blatant or egregious than the Patel lease deal.

Don't bet on Roosevelt going with the crowd tomorrow night. He wants to run for mayor, and he can't get elected being the snake's boy.

Anonymous said...

Roosevelt is not famous for making smart choices. His council colleagues and constituent base constantly remind him that he owes all to the black community and he responds out of fear and/or misguided loyalty. Considering the unneccesary lies and broken promises he made to the District 4 organizations, it would be a mistake to expect him to do the right, or even the smart thing.

Here is the REAL likely situation. They will Pull the veto override from the agenda...watch it. When the sun shines on these clowns the duck and run...watch it.

I don't think Smith would talk veto overide unless he thought he had the votes. The question is can he trust to votes to stick under pressure? I agree that Roosevelt is his weakest link in that regard.

This looks like Smith vs. Randolph. Where does Hobbs come into this? We were led to believe that this was his golden egg.

I have been trying to figure out the protocol on Lamar's blog. I think that only Lamar speaks. He can transplant worthy comments from the other blogs, the Town Talk, and the Koran but others may not publish original posts except as comments and assides (usually "way to go Lamar" ) appended to a Lamar post.

I would appear that in his Wisdom Hierarchy he has a clear lead. I read his Arna Bontemps piece and I think he may have some justification for his high opinion of himself. I personally liked that one alot. When he is not menstruating his stuff is full of insight, wit, humour, and some irony.

If he chooses to grace one's post with a transplant to his site, he reproduces it in sections, taking a moment to critique every assertion or opinion of the original poster.

He is not mean or cruel. He makes every attempt to be objective and invites others to challenge his statements. My guess is that he is a nice guy in real unpublished life.

He seems to deeply care about this community when others his age are contemplating having their nipples pierced.

He is worth watching.

Poll numbers as per reported by City Hall in the know...
Positives ...per peope..
Brewer 3.25 -4.1 POSITIVE
Sams....1-4.25 positive
Smith...2-5.2
Fuller..3-6.75
Curtis..3.1-6.3
Hixon..2-4.1
Johnson.3-5.3

As I understand this means that 3.25 of 4.1 persons who knew Brewer had a positive opinion of her. This is very good as opposed to a 1 out of 4.25 people that have a positive of Sams or 3 of 6.75 of Fuller. In other words if a campaign were launched and new people came to know them that did not this is the likely path of positives that would vote for the various candidates. Those with high positives but not high name recognition need only get their name recognition up. For those who had high negatives more name recognition wont help them much.

According to the poll if the election were held today it would be like this

17% Brewer
10% Johnson
9% Fuller
7.5% Curtis
8% Smith
5.4 Hixon
4.65 Sams
The rest is undecided.

They had lots of questions re issues and the main one was utilities and crime.

Im not an expert but it looks to me that its DELORES to win ..if she will get out..looks like the more people Sams meets the more his numbers will go down....I know..all of this is speculative but interesting....

Anonymous said...

I bet that Brewer's numbers have vastly improved over the last week based on her high profile defiance of the Council. Go Brewer.

Anonymous said...

Whoever gave the poll results - where are the rest of the names they polled. I was polled and there were others on the poll! Are these the only ones Delores beat out? Is that why they didn't release the #'s on the other potential candidates?

Anonymous said...

I don't think anything has been.."released" but I heard the same numbers from someone who is friends with someone at Provosty firm. I heard that Myrons numbers were included but that he has indicated he isnt running for Mayor but for reelection. The only other person I heard mentioned but that wasnt in the number mentioned by the other pollster was the Fire Chief but his numbers were very low on name recognition and on positives. All of this is purely a snapshot and doesnt mean much except to give the candidates an idea of what the people that DO know them think of them. Whoever hopes to get elected will have to spend lots of money and time . But the numbers listed by previous blogger are the same as the ones I saw. Maybe there is another poll out there. This one makes me think that Brewer has a very good chance. I understand the poll was done several weeks ago so her numbers may very well be better right now.

FYI

IP address Last modified: Thursday, August 12, 2004

An identifier for a computer or device on a TCP/IP network. Networks using the TCP/IP protocol route messages based on the IP address of the destination. The format of an IP address is a 32-bit numeric address written as four numbers separated by periods. Each number can be zero to 255. For example, 1.160.10.240 could be an IP address.
Within an isolated network, you can assign IP addresses at random as long as each one is unique. However, connecting a private network to the Internet requires using registered IP addresses (called Internet addresses) to avoid duplicates.

The four numbers in an IP address are used in different ways to identify a particular network and a host on that network. Four regional Internet registries -- ARIN, RIPE NCC, LACNIC and APNIC -- assign Internet addresses from the following three classes.

Class A - supports 16 million hosts on each of 126 networks
Class B - supports 65,000 hosts on each of 16,000 networks
Class C - supports 254 hosts on each of 2 million networks
The number of unassigned Internet addresses is running out, so a new classless scheme called CIDR is gradually replacing the system based on classes A, B, and C and is tied to adoption of IPv6.

I'm sure the federal government can eventually isolate a computer in a number of ways but I don't think it can be done by these morons. If I am wrong, send me an email.

Anonymous said...

A little bit about your IP address (Internet Protocol address). When you connect to the internet, either via your internet service provider (AOL, Prodigy, etc.), or your office LAN connection, you are assigned an IP address. This address identifies your computer from the other computers on the internet. Your IP address can be either static, meaning it never changes, or dynamic, meaning each time you dial-in or login you are assigned a new address for that session. Check with your internet service provider or network administrator to find out if your computer uses static or dynamic IP addressing.

Drivin' around, it's easy to see,
This town's goin' down real fast.

Somebody should do somethin' about it:
How hard could it be?
Somebody should do somethin' about it:
Maybe that someone is me.

Followed a couple into Ferguson's Grille;
The doors swung back in my face.
Closed my eyes but I felt the stares,
When I bowed my head to say grace.
Watched the table of suits stiff the waitress a tip,
Like they didn't have a nickel to spare.
Walked out in the heat risin' on Main Street,
But I felt the chill in the air.

Somebody should do somethin' about it:

Hey Ned! Any truth to the talk that you and Delores are going to let certain council members get rid of another employee? I heard from a supervisor that your going to roll over and let the councilmen have their way. Seems this employee refused to do illegal work demanded by Dorsey, and then went after CFS and proved him wrong when CFS was spreading rumors about said employee. Seems that there are a couple of department heads playing along also. Too bad all they can do is spread lies and try to save their own skin. One of them likes to borrow money from his workers, then "let" them work overtime to pay them back.

What do you say about all this second floor?

Wake up Alexandria, this City Government started down hill when Charles Smith and Myron Lawson took charge. Their meddling with the gas contracts and abuse of Cleco, killing a very attractive electricity contract, have increased your utility bill by 30%. Most of the crazy things they do is to steer contracts to their handlers Jeff Richardson and William Barron. This is where the FBI should look, if they are in fact in town.Ned is helpless and can't or will not stop them.

Anonymous said...

It's a fact jack.

Anonymous said...

Does anyone remember the "Research Park"? $30,000 of Rapides Parish and City of Alexndria taxpayer money to Mr Richardson for what? Guess who proposed it and steered it thru the City Council and the Police Jury?

Anonymous said...

Correction -- it was $60,000 from the Police Jury and $60,000 from the City. Mr. Joe Fuller steered it through the Police Jury and the Honorables Myron Lawson and Charles Smith handled hit on the city side. By the way Fowler and Ranson voted against it - one of the many 5 - 2 votes.

Anonymous said...

Well it is twice as bad as I thought. Thanks for the correction. Maybe you can explain the gas contract Mr Barron and two convicted fellons tried to broker to the City in 2004. Smith and Lawson tried to push it thru the Council the same way they tried to slip the wireless meter reading deal past everyone. Any campaign money involved? I understand that Harold Chambers stopped that deal. Maybe we now know why he was fired.

Anonymous said...

Please observe that Mr. Smith & Co. is trying to put the gas cost failure on the administration with that Atmos public display at the last council meeting. Let's see how Delores handles that.

Anonymous said...

There is a Department Head doing his best to run down the way the Public Works division is being handled now. He wants to move up in the world and is trying to do it the old fashoned way. We will see if it works.

Anonymous said...

I'll be glad to explain how Smith and Lawson tried to force the gas contract down our throats. It seems that our esteemed City Attorney Kelvin "I'm partners with Myron and Bridgette" Sanders arranged a meeting with certain councilmen and the gas experts. Those gas experts were former state agriculture commissioner Gil Dozier, former superintendent of education Kelly Nix, and oil barons Jeff Richardson and William Barron.

My understanding is that they had the greatest deal in history for gas and, out of the goodness of their hearts, were offering it to the city of Alexandria.

Harold Chambers decided to do a credit check on this company. The rest was history - the oil experts disappeared and were never heard from again.

Was any under the table money involved here? Of course not - and if you believe that I have some natural gas I'd like to sell YOU!

The City of Alexandria has a dual fuel power plant that currently has enough capacity to produce the city 's needs and with the addition of two gas turbine units routing exhaust for a boiler preheat, the efficiency can be raised to be economical with additional power for sale. With a little foresight, I don't know why the city cannnot contract for supply with any of the many natural gas producers in our state. Why buy on the spot market? Also, the additional power sales could stabilize our rates. The dirty little secret that not many of you know is that the city of Alexandria has a power on demand contract with Cleco and the plant has 30 minutes to be online from the demand call. Any one that knows anything about power generation knows that rapid start up of a power station wreaks havoc on the equipment. Timing for the demand also comes when it is cheaper for the city to produce than it is to buy on the grid. So people, you are subsidizing Cleco's profits as well as contributing by the city's count, five million dollars to the general fund without the ability to vote on a tax increase. They deny the use of the word profit, but the revenue excess that will be transferrred to the general fund is exactly that from the overcharge and mismanagement of our utility department. There are also forces that would sell our generating capability and keep us at the mercy of other energy suppliers by removing our bargaining power. The city of Alexandria has a gold mine in its backyard and the ability to use it as a draw card for industry and we allow the selfish interest of a few to rob us with a pencil. As a side note, since we have a city administered utility, there is no oversight from the public service commission since that is our job as citizens. The next time you are crying about your exorbitant utility bill, pat yourself on the back for being an involved citizen. Spanky for Mayor

Spanky, here is another dirty little secret, you can’t read and interpret a contract. Know what you are talking about before you post it.

Ok I plead ignorant - so now enlighten all of us how it works. You seem to have a working knowledge. And Scarlet - guess publicly.

OK, Ned said it. That should open the door to an old fashion land rush. Who is running?

Just an fyi about Alex's power plants, they're very inefficient and thus produce extremely expensive power. It's much cheaper to buy power from elsewhere. I guess they could spend money on upgrades but I'd bet that's many millions of dollars.

Also, for a company as big as Cleco, if they had distributed the executive's bonuses to all of their customers instead, everyone probably would have seen a $1 reduction in their bills. That's not intended to be an excuse, but just adds a little perspective.

The power plant needs some modifications in the chill water area to produce greater vacuum at the condenser for one. Secondly, the addition of a gas turbine unit that is very efficient could be ducted, scavenged and used to boost the main boiler temps prior to fuel charging thereby reducing overall fuel consumption. It is not the dinosaur many would have the public believe. And it is a bargaining tool. Lose the plant and see where your rates go.
Another solution is to let a private company such as cleco or entergy take the distribution and therefore be regulated by the PSC, but retain the plant and modify it to be more efficient and sell power on the grid.
What about all of the other stuff we should expect as citizens, like some semblance of planning. What idiot or group thereof had the foresight to allow development to the point where Jackson Street is the only thoroughfare from the river to the outlying newer subdivisions. What a brilliant strategy that was. It was allowed to slide because no one wanted to make demands of developers that they must also have sufficient access to handle the increased traffic. What foresight. (wasn't RAPC or CRAP whatever it is, instituted to provide a development overview for the parish after witnessing the rapid growth of many metropolitan areas and the problems urban sprawl caused? What happened.)
Do we have a solution to our solid waste situation? Oh yeah, truck it.
We are # 4 in per capita homocides nationwide for a city of any size. what is that all about?
What of that is interesting to draw others to our community or retain our young people. I know these are negative observations, but our population has dwindled to 46,000. from a high of 58,000. That sounds like backing up to me. There are answers, but they don't lie in the next study commisioned to line the pockets of some councilman's friend. Spanky for mayor

When the time is right Scarlett my dear. I am trying to keep my dementia in check after my last wife used mercury to try to do me in, so pardon the rant.
