1 – 200 of 2571 Newer› Newest»I hope the Democrat party leaders in Cenla will find a better candidate than Glen Beard for state representative. His record as a police chief and past moral decisions have been horrible. And, he's already too old to serve effectively. You talk about the fox in the hen house!
I like this idea. My only hope is that it is taken seriously for what it is, a communial exchange of political and economic information for ALL of us in central Louisiana.
I glad this site was set up. Things are getting worse and worse with Cenla politcs, especially in the City of Alexandria. The recent "water torture" was the last straw. We seem to be headed for a city government that is like the pre-Katrina one in New Orleans: full of incompetents and self-dealing.
smellypelican: Do you actually think that the people outside of Alexandria want to be connected to what is going on in Alexandria, just so the city can increase in population? They would never vote on it! It would be ideal for Alexandria, though.
Wow...........this is great! I am so glad there is finally a venue for people to express their views and concerns about the political shenanigans going on in our city. Hopefully, the comment about the FBI is accurate.
This is great. I hope the blog is used to find out information otherwise not reported in the traditional media.
The next election cycle (not the judges race) should be a very interesting one to say the least. Who are the Mayorial candidates to be? Unless there is a concerted effort by the local electorate to dispense with cronyism, the next Mayor will be identified by the annointment of "The Council". Perhaps a parish wide government would best serve the voters.
I agree with parish wide government comment.
Nobody cares.
Well, some care. But.......obviously, not enough.
Nobody cares ... This is the problem. Apathy runs rampant throughout this state. Politically and otherwise. "If it doesn't effect me, I don't care" ... When will people realize that in all eventualities, it will effect them. One day they'll take a look around and find that they are too far from shore to save themselves. Who will be there to rescue them. Choose wisely my friend, choose wisely.
Does anyone have any insite to the 9th District Judges race?
The judges race? Things have been quiet for a Louisiana race. All of the candidates have kept things on the up and up this time around. It's refreshing and bewildering at the same time. Apparently everyone is sleeping with whom they are supposed to be sleeping with! No one has a south american indian tribe love child or anything! Kudos to the candidates!
Well.........concerning the judge's race. I noticed that one of the candidates' flier showed himself with 3 or 4 children. There was no mention of a wife, divorced.......anything. What is that situation about? Is he married, divorced, had his children out of wedlock or what????
Check out this article on Hurricane Rita's Cajun victims.

Political leadership on the south side of the river basically sucks. Whether it's potholes all over town that aren't being fixed, the lack of any real planning, lawsuits galore, deals with friends, establishing new unneeded ventures (like business incubators and GAEDA) to feed at the public trough and employ even more friends. It's time for a change.
In order for a better political/economic climate to exist in any part of Louisiana, people have to pay attention to WHO they elect as well as develop a bit of common sense. For example, having watched C-SPAN this evening, both Senators Durbin and Landrieu again lambasted W on his tax cut to "the wealthy". Describe wealthy. Perhaps I fit into that catagory. I am a business owner. I employ taxpayers, I pay local, state and national taxes ... corporately. I personally, the wealthy business owner, have not taken any money (salary or otherwise) out of my business in several years. I have put money into it so that I stay in business. The tax cuts help me only in the aspect that it "gives" me more money to put back into circulation via vendors, pay raises, additional employees, etc... As a "wealthy" business owner I apparently exist in fact only to keep the downtrodden in their place! Perhaps all of the "wealthy" should give away all of the wealth and go on the public dole. Should be short lived... no money in ...no money out. What was the old fax from years ago? The new IRS tax form ... Line 1: How much did you make this year?
Line 2: Send it in.
Louisiana Phoenix..........I agree with you. One of the biggest frustrations of being a business owner is all of the taxes you have to pay. The more people who are "on the dole" the more taxes we have to pay. Why do we continue to "dole" out to people who do absolutely nothing for it? We should be helping people to learn to fend for themselves and then require that they do just that. Continuing to pay all the bills for these people teaches them absolutely nothing and puts us further in debt!! Most frustrating!
Who are the Alexandria Mayorial contenders? Will Mayor Randolph run again? Will the recent forced resignations of Harold Chambers, Sonny Craig and Darryl Williamson and the resulting lawsuits cause a Federal investigation into the present administration and the council?
Sonny and Harold did not resign. They were asked to resign but each refused. When asked why their resignations were being asked for, no reason could be given. So they were terminated. I don't think the mayor will run again and will be surprised if he makes it through this term.
I had heard that when the mayor resigns, Charles Frederic, who is mayor pro tem, will step in for the remainder of the term and then run for a full term. Doesn't anyone know of a good candidate who is willing to run?
Rumor had it at one time that Rick Ranson may be inclined to run for Mayor. But with his recent move outside of the city limits, that answers that ...
One possible contender would be Keith Rabalais or Wayne Denley. I would love to have Clarence Fields. Believe it or not, Milton Gordon (The Yard Doctor) has made several good comments on both the political and economic side.
I’d like to suggest a link to add to the links list: The Dead Pelican (www.thedeadpelican.com).
Further, in answer to Anonymous’s question about one of the candidates for judge, one candidate is in the throes of a divorce. It’s a shame, but true.
Hmmm.....Shouldn't the candidate for judge who is getting a divorce have revealed that to the public? If he tries to hide that, what else will he try to hide? Just food for thought.
Well I guess Gay Coleman is in the clear!
Did I miss something here?
It looks like more than a few people think Gay Coleman is the most qualified and has the best temperament for the judgeship.
Gay Coleman has excellent presence. She comes across as decisive and assured. However, she at times appears to be more of a liberal than a conservative and we have more than enough liberal judges.
The comments about Gay Coleman has to be from her family members or campaign staff. I've been at several meetings where she absolutely ignores everyone in the room and visits only with her little lady friends. Liberal is her middle name: she want use her husband's name and is active in a very liberal church. Her radio ad about being a conservative Christian is misleading. Episcopal and conservative Christian do not go together. She is nice but does not have what it takes to be a judge.
My,my...........what a sexist, biased and judgemental comments we have here today. I'm sure the Episcopalian Republicans we all know and love really appreciated that one. "I know Gay Coleman, Gay Coleman is a friend of mine". She does not ignore people in a room. She is actually somewhat shy. She is not a far right fringe conservative, but nevertheless, a conservative she is. And as for her not taking her husband's name, that does not make her a liberal. It does mean she has worked hard for 23 long years to establish her name in her business and it makes good sense to keep the professional name she had while establishing herself. She is extremely intelligent and is most qualified for this position.
Hey peeps. Just heard about this blog. Anyone have an idea when the Mayor will resign? I suppose he'll spend his retirement testifying in all the lawsuits he's helped get the city into. That assumes he will be competent to do so.
Rumor has it he has alzheimer's disease. I sincerely hope that's not true. My mother has that and it is no cakewalk. Of course, that would explain a lot of things. I heard he was to resign last Friday; however, that never happened. I would just like to see the FBI come in to look at the books and all of the alleged conflicts of interest going on downtown.
Gay Coleman is a breath of fresh air: a reasoned conservative. Reasoned. Hmmm. IMHO, the 9th Judicial District Court needs a double armload of that. Add that to Gay’s obvious intelligence, her knowledge and love of the law and the practical application thereof, along with her deep-seated integrity, and it’s a no-brainer to me. Moreover, Gay is an orthodox Episcopalian, firmly grounded in Scripture and tradition. She is hardly a liberal, but a calm, steadfast example of what it means to be a compassionate conservative. Gay Coleman: A Reasoned, Compassionate Conservative. How’s that for a bumper sticker? BTW, if one looks at her church’s directory, Gay is listed under her husband’s name. Coleman is her PROFESSIONAL name, period.
Well, Hallelujah!!!! Finally a contributor with good old-fashioned common sense! Thank You!
There are a lot of "unmentionables" in Louisiana politics. At what point do the concerned citizens stand up and take charge? "As long as it doesn't affect me ..." can only be used for so long. Every action taken by anybody or anything can and eventually will, affect the individual. Getting back to the Mayor ... who will step forward or do we continue with the shadow cabinet or Ms. Bridgett Brown and Mr. Myron Lawson?
As far as the judges race goes the only people in the race (if you go by media)are Patricia, Gay and Greg. Ed and Paul are yard signs! Opinion: this race will be between the women.
What about the investigation of a high city official for stealing relief supplies?
Wow..........that sounds interesting and plausible. More info, please. I hear a lot. If half of it is true, we had better pray for the FBI.
In the Judge's race I am for Greg Upton because he is the opposite of Bridgett Brown. That's all you need to know to make that decision.
Look for the mayor to resign, CFS to take over and things to really get interesting. The mayor will step down as there's no way his handlers will let him get on the stand in court. Lots of deals being cut and papers shredded downtown.
In the judges race, why Upton over Koch or Coleman?
If there is a trial, and I believe there will be, how can the mayor avoid taking the stand if he is subpoened? I don't think resigning will exempt him from that. And, frankly, I think he should be required to do so, as well as the city attorney and the council members. I still would love to hear more about the highly placed official being involved in theft of hurricane relief supplies.
Why is it that everyone is ignoring the question of who will run for Mayor of Alexandria? And not Charles Frederic, Bridgett Brown or Myron ....We need an outsider, someone with a can-do, don't-mess-with-me personality. We need to FORCE change.
I don't think people are ignoring the ?? I think no one knows. I mentioned it to Wayne Denley at Rotary Tuesday. He just smiled and said his wife made some humorous comment when he told her about the rumors. Who knows? He didn't really seem opposed, however.
I thuink Jay Bolen now lives outside the city limits.
There are several people who would make a very good Mayor. Too bad most of them don't want to deal with the council and the baggage Ned & company are leaving. What about the Public Works director? Who's going to "fix" that problem? How about the sweetheart deals for the lawyers and the Revs? What about CFS and his masters? It's going to take someone who is strong, able, and impartial. Can such a person be elected in Alexandria?
Given the demographics of the city (and being the cynic that i am), i doubt that we can elect an impartial intelligent individual as mayor.
I have heard that one of the candidates for the judge's race refuses to try divorce cases because he doesn't believe in divorce. None of us want to see anyone get a divorce, but how can you be a "fair and balanced" judge if you refuse to deal with them.
Is the rumor true about the divorced judge losing his wife because of gambling and womanizing? Wow, if it is, he does not need to be a judge.
Re: the judge's wife. It is sad but true. everyone is surprised it took her so long.
May I ask who this judge is?
All I can say is, Gay Coleman will not refuse to hear divorce cases. Nor does she cheat and gamble. Moreover, we need someone, like Gay, who has spent years in the trenches, as it were, not someone who’s been “warming the bench.”
Well...here, here....you've got my vote!
Hi Everyone - Too bad about the election! Looks as if we need to get our stuff together. Could it be we just had too many candidates? I think Patricia bled a little from us. We need to stop the "bleeding". Any ideas????
I do know that a few Republicans voted for Patricia. Some say this is not a Dem or Rep position. I disagree. Seems maybe the one who got her people out to vote won this race. Apparently, we need to do what it takes to get our people to the polls. APATHY wins again.
Michael Barker is a nut. A bona fide nut.
Who the h__l is Michael Barker???
What about Carroll Lanier or Butch Crenshaw for mayor? Both said their interested in the job.
Top 10 Reasons we Need a New Mayor:
10. Firing Chambers when he did.
9. Not firing Chambers a long time ago.
8. Highest sales tax in the U.S.
7. Roads and infrastructure falling apart. Metro planning organization doesn't meet or doesn't do anything.
6. Hiring Bridgett Brown for legal work (what a joke).
5. Business incubator (another joke).
4. CLECO fiasco.
3. Contingent fee fiasco.
2. City council apparently views N.O council as its "ideal".
1. South Traffic circle still exists!
What has Barker done now?
Someone mentioned Betty Cox! Well if you would sit back and take a look at what we have had since. Maybe we should have saved the million and let her stay and straighten this board out. I am not rich, but I have since started pulling my three children out of public schools and putting them in private. At public schools my kids get reduced lunches and at private I have to pay for everything. BUT the old saying "You get what you pay for" and the public school system is not worth the time or money. As for as Mayor --- Maybe someone should call Betty Cox!!! There are no honest decent candidates in this town!
Whoooooaaaaa!!!!! Now come on....I'm sure there's someone. We just have to be diligent in finding them. Then.......trying to convince them to run is another matter.
Barker is State Rep T. Wright's little buddy and an arrogant little ass.
"Barker is State Rep T. Wright's little buddy and an arrogant little ass."
Well, that's just plain earth-shattering. Good grief...
Harry Silver?????????? Neds machine has the fix in!
Whats wrong with Harry Silver?
Looks ot be an interesting day in Alexandria. Lets hope that we actually have some progress.
Supposedly the council wants someone who will not run for Rick's seat in the next election ... gives them the time to pick their guy!
Last week an organization called Gopac(?) had an event with Moon Griffon where he, Moon, spoke of a contract with Louisiana (ala Newt Gingrich), in which elected officials have a covenant with their constituents. Isn't this what they should have anyway? I agree that there should be reinforcement, so perhaps this needs to happen. It's absurd that we even have to agree with this concept, somebody needs to slap the populace in the back of their heads and get them to pay attention.
Frankly, I think this contract is geared more toward keeping the elected officials in step with their constituents than anything else. God knows they tend to lose their way after they've been elected.
On this contract with Lousiana, any ideas as to what the elected officials should include in that. Other than a speedy and efficient evacuation plan for hurricanes? :o)
I was there for the meeting with Moon and it was very well done and productive. Hopefully this "Contract With Louisiana" will gain some traction.
By the way, what about noise ordinances in this city? I've got dudes slowly cruising by day and night just blaring their bass. Why doesn't APD crack down on this atrocious behavior?
I would say file a complaint. Get a group in your neighborhood together and go to City Hall for the meetings. The more pressure you put on the council, the more action you might get on this.
Are there any good conservative candidates in cenla that are going to run for any of the open seats in the legislature in 07?
Rumor has it a conservative is considering running against Rick Farrar. What has a lot of people buzzed is the possibility of John Sams, M.D., running for Mayor of Alexandria. Any thoughts on that?
I just finished a conversation with Dr. Sams and he is definitely running for mayor.
What are the details on Dr. Sams? I've read a lot about him in the paper, but I don't know much about him.
It looks as if Sonny Craig has landed on his feet. It appears he already has a new job and a very good one at that. Apparently, this was a blessing in disguise.
Tony Owens will run for the house in district 22 in 2007. He came very close last time.
Chris Hazel, an assistant d.a., and a well respected Republican, will run against Rick Farrar. He is a former U.S. Marine and his father made a career in the National Guard. He lives in Pineville.
Beau Meynard will run for Charlie Dewitt's state representative seat. He is just what that district needs.
Charles F. Smith is doing everything to kick Ned while he is down, and force him into early retirement. Yes, John Sams will run for mayor. I do not see him as a pretty boy, ribbon cutting sort of guy. He will clean up the corruption caused by the present administration and council. He needs to be encouraged to step up to this mess because, if given the power, no one could stop him from implementing the needed changes.
Dr. Sams was miffed by the coucil's treatment of the people of Dist. 4 in choosing Rick Ranson's replacement and he thinks this city is ready for a clean sweep. Hope he's right!
Freeloading Fowler needs to be the next to go. How so many smart educated middleclass people can let the Chuckster misrepresent their interests is a puzzlement. Maybe if Dr. Sams runs for Mayor, somebody with character in District 5 will step up. Hope so.
If Ned will retire early, Alexandria will see the real Charles Fredrick. Might actually open some eyes or dig some heads out of the sand. I doubt it though. The "power" brokers in Alex don't have what it takes to really fix the problems caused by the current council and Ned tha past 5 years. Maybe not what it takes.just won't do the hard thing.
This thing with the evacuees really has me scratching my head. I fully understand Fred Rosenfeld's feelings about them coming in next to his business. I certainly don't think the Bentley is the appropriate place for them. Isn't there some military housing out at England Air Park? Why in the world wouldn't they just spruce those up and use those rather than putting so much $$ in temporary housing in places noone is happy with?
Received this email yesterday:
As almost everyone knows, Bob Dean, the owner of The Hotel Bentley, has been moving all the valuables from the hotel and is working with FEMA, among other organizations, to use the historic treasure as a home for 600 folks displaced by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
We all want to help disaster victims, whether they are in our midst, or not. In that light, The Hotel Bentley, one of our most treasured monuments to history, is not a suitable place to house disaster victims. Due to the nature of the building, the lack of security and inevitable violations of fire and plumbing codes, among other problems, The Hotel Bentley would become an extremely unhealthy and unsafe environment for the victims. Don't they deserve better? Yes, they absolutely do.
To that end, it is imperative we flood our at-large city councilmen with telephone calls explaining our displeasure at such a terrible idea. Moreover, we all must attend a critical meeting of the Alexandria City Council, Tuesday, November 8, 2005 (tomorrow), at 5 pm, at City Hall. If we want to do the responsible thing by hurricane victims, we all must step up to the plate. PLEASE call and show up. Public pressure is key.
The names and contact information of our at-large councilmen follow. Access the city's web site to retrieve the contact information for your own city councilman: http://www.cityofalexandriala.com/citygov/city_council/councildir.asp . Also, if you send an e-mail you might want to copy the very able Billy Gunn at The Town Talk: bgunn@thetowntalk.com .

Asbestos in the apartments at England Air Park is the cause for not having the evacuees move in those buildings.
Voters need to call Harry Silver about the evacuees moving across the street from his downtown Weiss and Goldring building. Of course, he doesn't really care, as long as the council fulfills their end of the bargain and have GAEDA purchase his old building. Isn't that why he was appointed to the council by Myron? Myron controls GAEDA, too. Someone needs to stop him before it is too late.
This is much bigger than us. It is not about the person or the political affliation, it is about the NAACP and Jesse Jackson taking control of our town. Did anyone hear of the private meeting with Jackson and Myron Lawson and Bridgett Brown at his State Farm office? I do not think they were discussing the fate of the evacuees.
My Gosh...... would anyone not consider the fact that GAEDA is interested in buying a building from Harry Silver and then Myron puts him on the City Council a conflict of interest???? I think everyone was hoping that Harry would give us some support!
Why hasn't anything been done about the missing funds in several of the Chamber of Commerces' accounts? Or is the chamber just playing musical chairs with their money. Isn't Eldon Poty getting ready to retire?
Harry was put in to keep Lampert out. Myron and the boys knew what to do.
Oh what a decent reporter who would actually dig out ALL of a story could do in this town.
What???????? What's this about monies missing in Chamber of Commerce accounts? Who has access to the money? Where did you hear this? There is so much c__p going on in this town.
As I wrote, Eldon Poty is getting ready to retire and some accounts have come up short. It appears that money was taken out of one account and some of it replace from another. It does not add up. I am sure that the president, Mike Johnson, is aware of the problem, although HE is not the problem.
The powers that be do not want a decent reporter here. They do not want good government either. They do not want the public to know the truth. Their philosophy is "Keep them stupid, then you can control them," and it has been that way in Alexandria for the past 100 years.
John Sams refers to them as the shadow government. Harry has been part of that group as long as I can remember. At the same time he desperately needs to unload that piece of property downtown. Desparate enough to cut a deal with the devil.
This is awful! By the way, it's Elton Pody, not Eldon Poty. Couldn't someone send an anonymous email to the paper on these things?
I flirted with masochism, last night, and watched the City Council meeting. The television picture wasn’t all that clear, but I did manage to glimpse the glistening marionette strings attached to Harry Silver. Since Billy Gunn reported on the – uh – meeting, I’m quite sure he saw the strings, too.
yeah, but you gotta admire the way the Mayor Randolph stood up to the council - fearless, dedicated, aware, and eager. Lord hep us. And they treated poor Nerine Day with total contempt and disregard. whew!
Freeloading Fowler was his classic ineffective self. He is unable to even get a 2nd for his motions. He should stay home and watch on Channel 4 like the rest of his victims.
Someone needs to step up to the plate and run against freeloading Fowler. That district represents mostly above average income families with children. They spend lots of money in Alexandria, which translates into tax dollars used to run the city government. They deserve a voice in how it is run and where the money is spent! Fowler is an embarrassment!
Wow! It only took Harry a week to turn on Chuck and start unloading his building to GAIDA. At last some real leadership at City Hall.
I am surprised that nobody has said anything about the FBI being here about 6 to 8 months ago. They camped out at the Holiday Inn Downtown, but it was almost impossible to find out why they were snooping around city hall. They were investigating Councilman Myron Lawson. It seems that he was somehow involved in the Wm. Jefferson investigation, something to do with contracts. As I find out more, I will pass it on.
Could it have anything to do with the Southern Board, his most coveted position?
Can Southern University take another scandal? Myron visits shame on all that he touches.
Does the Lawson Estates (or whatever the name is for the new low income housing community in southern Alexandria) have any connection to Myron?
Bet it won't be "low income" for Lawson . . .
Lawson Heights is a lease to own subdivision. I would imagine that it is a HUD project, and I bet Mary Landrieu got it for him.
Dean to sue Alex. Seems like with all them lawyers (Brigit Brown, Kelvin Sanders, Ned Randolph, Harry Silver, Al Provosky, Trey Gist) they could do something right. Council Pres. Smith says let 'em sue. The legal costs and judgment amounts should come directly from the proceeds of his new bar room.
Last count, I understand the city of Alexandria has 22 lawyers working for them.
Chas. F. will use this as a campaign drive for money because he knows that all it is going to cost is the taxpayers money to sue. No assets can be taken from a municipality. Remember, he is going to run for mayor next fall and he thinks he can win. Watch all contracts, especially constrution work, these next few months, then compare them with his campaign finance report.
Can someone fill me in on Dr. Sams? Is he a conservative, liberal, independent or what? Sorry, I haven't been here long enough to know the ins and outs of these people.
Dr. Sams is a well trained and caring physican. He is fearless, intelligent, and at least 25% nuts. He is a school board member and has made a huge difference in the way the education business is done in Rapides Parish now. Would I want somebody like him to marry my sister? No. Is he the perfect mayor for Alexandria now? Most definately.
On a personal note, his children have been his pride and joy. He has their pictures up all over his medical office. And don't ask about them. He loves to talk about their successes. And he was always very involved in their activities.
Sams is a mainstream Republican, but he is his own person, not a party person.
Hmmmmm.....sounds like Dr. Sams would be a good candidate! Wish I could vote.
Tony Owens would make a great state representative.
Who is Tony Owens? Which state representative district would he run in?
If rumors of Ned Randolph's failing health are true, I hope he can hang on until we can pick a successor instead of turning the Charles Smith. Although, I understand that Myron Lawson is the absolute ruler and decision maker and Smith just bows and scrapes to Myron's will.
You have the picture.
The obvious solution is to have Mayor Randolph appoint John Sams as his Chief of Staff, let him get his feet wet and learn the lay of the land, protect the office, keep Smith out of that office, and put Sams in the posture of incumbant. Ned gets to finish his term, he and the city are safe, we have an experienced chief executive coming out of the blocks after the next election. Somebody do something!
Tony Owens resides in House District # 22 and almost beat Mr. Tommy Wright last time.
That is a good idea for Ned to put Sams in as his chief of staff. I don't think Ned has the guts to do it, though. The black councilmen pretty well control him right now. Sams wouldn't have any power to do anything about it and that would really frustrate him. It might be better to be on the outside looking in.
Is Mr. Owens a Republican? He should be a shoe in if he has the name recognition from last time and he almost won. Is he going to run? What is his profession?
Somebody needs to do something. With Randolph's obvious limitations and the council's total disregard for the public will or good, I am starting to miss the halcyon days & dignified administration of Tillie Snyder. And what's the deal on Charles Smith's acquiring ownership of a local saloon? It is starting to look like the sheriff works for Smith.
Mr. Owens is a republican and a shoe in for next time.
Is Dist. 22 in Cenla or do they just stop here to use the restroom?
22 is all of Grant and LaSalle. Along with portions of Winn & Rapides.
tell us something about Mr. Owens: his age,his education, his occupation, his family, his record of accomplishment and civic contribution . . .
Good question. I too have noticed a paucity of meaningful information about Tony Owens. We have come to know a fair amount about Mr. Wright, the candidate that the district preferred to Owens. But so far, the only qualification we have heard is that "anonymous" really really really likes him. Give us facts.
He is a self made man from a good family. A working man who attended Jena High School. He is very civic minded and an advocate for those who work hard in the logging industry. He is close friends with many elected offcials in the district.
Forgive me for saying so but you have answered NONE of the questions about your candidate. You know the feeling you get when they tell you your blind date has a "good personality". If Tony Owens is a serious candidate, He (you) need to be prepared to answer basic questions like the ones posed. I assure you that this will not be the last time that his education, his employment, his family, his history, and his accomplishments will come up. He knows important people??? so does the elevator operator at the Pentagon.
Come on...........I think we can be civil about all of this. I'm sure "anonymous" understands that sooner or later all of this info has to come out before anyone can be a serious candidate.
I gotta go with "forgive me but" on this. Why won't he/she/they respond to the most basic inquiries? Must be hiding something. I agree that we should remain civil. I guess it was just frustration.
I agree. It's great to have somebody like Sams to vote for. I'm tired of professional politicians. I hope every councilman draws strong opposition.
"Now is the time for good, common sense community leaders to step up and run for office"
#1 Are there any who are willing to run?
#2 Are there any who are not in on the sharing of the spoils?
#3 Are there any in the media willing to actually expose the mendacity of city hall?
yes
Yes??????....Yes what????
I agree with the needing of new blood at city hall. With all that has happened to Louisiana this past year, an ABSOLUTE change is needed. The voters, across the board, in every election need to show a concern for the future of Louisiana. Perhaps I was born in the wrong decade, but I believe that it is my responsibility to leave this place in better shape than was given to me. Every day i hear of more people leaving the state. They are leaving for better jobs, better education, and "a place with less corruption". Most cities have viable media. What do we have? The Town Talk. I can read just about everything that the town talk publishes (obviously not on the local level) three days prior in The Times Picayune or The Advocate. Television? Please. Channel Five is the big bull in town ... how much do they do for the community? When did you see and investigative reporter overturning rocks at city hall? Or better yet, weeks of publicity on an upcoming event or festival. The Town Talk is simple, "no newsy, no subscibie" ... Channel Five, when does their licensing come due? Let the FCC know your thoughts.
Yes to:
#1 Are there any who are willing to run?
#2 Are there any who are not in on the sharing of the spoils?
#3 Are there any in the media willing to actually expose the mendacity of city hall?
What rocks are there to turn over. It's all out in front of a public that doesn't care: the Jakes bldg., Regions Bank, Weiss & Goldrings; the real council meetings at Smith's saloon; Ned's infirmity; the Enland authority paying thousands for Southern U. football game; Brigit Brown; Kelvin Sander's wife; Charlie Nunally,s retirement; Harold Chamber's deals; Darrel Williamson's stuff - turn over what rocks? It is more like raising a toilet lid, and nobody seems to care.
I guess I missed something somewhere. What kind of deals did Harold Chambers make and with whom? Also, what did Darrel Williamson do to get fired????? I would really like to know.

Did anyone else catch Ned the Lionhearted at the council meeting last night. He gave them the cussing that they so richly deserved. Fowler was all alone in trying to do the right thing. Thanks Harry! You are exactly what we expected.
Tony Owens is just wasting his time running in house district 22. State Senator Mike Smith plans to run for that seat. Since he term limits out of the senate this term. So stay home and save your money Mr. Owens.
What in the world is the use for term limits if someone can turn around and run for another seat in a different facet of the legislature? Isn't that defeating the purpose of the term limits?????
Plenty plan on doing just that. Noble Ellington plans on running for his old house seat. Mike Smith plans to run for the house in 22 and Leland Kenney will run for the Senate seat being vacated by Ellington.
Only the electorate can effectively impose term limits (except in the middle east where they blow you up or cut off your head).
Word is that Glen Beard has raised much $$$$ and is ready to rumble. Any credible challengers?
Money isn't everything. He is pretty arrogant and I do not think the district will warm up to him. Beau Meynard is a much better candidate. He will also have some large contributors, and he has the personality and appearance it will take to get elected. I understand that Lance Maxwell, Sen. Vitter's Alexandria assistant, is planning on running, too. He is much too young and inexperienced to appeal to the people of this district.
"He gave them the cussing that they so richly deserved"
Why is Ned whining now? He created this monster, let him live with it. Ned lost his honor years ago and deserves everything he gets. Poor lil Ned wants everybody to feel sorry for him. I wouldn't pee on him if he was on fire.
Ned won't suffer from Alexandria's decline. He feathered his nest pretty well. But if you live or work in Alexandria you need to consider something more than who(m) you will pee on and give some thought to who(m) you will vote for. The City Council ain't Ned's problem - it's ours.
If you really must pee in something, may I suggest the Charles F. Smith Memorial Water Park where the motto is "Everything Goes Down the Drain".
Being that I live AND work in Alex,I agree. The council is the main problem. However a strong mayor that actually cared about something besides leaving his place in history could do a great deal of good. It's going to take both to drag this city from the pit we're now in.
It's going to take exposure of the "deals" and the outright theft that occurs on a daily basis to wake up the complacent population.
With the media refusing to report ALL the news, the local law community not wanting to make waves, and the average person scared to tell the truth, how can things change?
Consider the possiblity that there have always been capable and dedicated people to fill the positions - what we lack is an informed population that will inconvenience themselves enough to care and actually vote. We can save this city but it will take more than bitching on some blog. It will take interest and participation.
Here.......here!
Where,.......where???
THE SMITH-LAWSON WATER PARK where "We All Go Down the Drain Together" - now there is a theme we can embrace. I like it.
How 'bout: "Lawson Aquapark - We Make Trying to Keep Your Head Above Water Fun"
"what we lack is an informed population that will inconvenience themselves enough to care and actually vote"
How true. Does anyone have a workable idea for changing this?
Okay, so we discuss change and possible candidacies. WHO will run? WHO is serious on running? AND most importantly WHO is the most COMPETANT and VIABLE candidate? For which election ... why all of them of course!
If the antics of the present government meet a threshold level of arrogance and/or dumbass, the people will react. I think the very presence of the blog shows that Alexandria is approaching that threshold. You can see a whole new generation of community leaders being stimulated to involvement. You have doctors and lawyers and community-based organizations showing a new level of involvment and interest. The times produce the leaders. Look at Rosemary Macklin: a comfortable physician's wife who comes here via Jamaica, London, New York, and now Florence Avenue. That is the kind of spirit, intellect, courage, and drive that can produce real meaningful change. STAY TUNED.
True. Kinda preachy but true.
That appears to be the most important factor in the upcoming election for mayor and council, a viable and competent candidate. Some candidates may be very smart and successful as doctors or business people, but sometimes they can be too smart. So smart that they think they know it all and do not listen. They want their way because they think that is the best way. They expect everyone else to follow along with their way of thinking without any input. This is not productive, very selfish, and not at all smart. It also makes them very unpredictable and untrustworthy. These types are not electable.
We already tried electing people who are uneducated, unintellegent, and unsuccessful - that's what we have got now and it is obviously the formula for disaster. Professional people are called upon to make important judgments every day. Their survival, and frequently our survival, depends on it. Please don't be affraid of doctors and lawyers because they are smart. Stupid people are far more likely to be opinionated and inflexible. It is part of their defense mechanism. If you aren't sure about this, tune in to channel 4.
Amen. Please don't be affraid on non-politician people that obviously have little to gain except satisfying thier desire for public service. I trust people who are willing to sacrificc. We aren't going to have a lot of chances to turn Alexandria arround. If we blow this chance and leave the city to the current crop of vultures, we are asking for the disaster and image we get. Please think about our city. It doesn't have to be this way. Good people will do good things.
Okay, people. If we're going to talk about educated and uneducated people, please edit your comments for errors. This is one of my pet peeves about the Town Talk. No one ever seems to edit and correct their errors....such as spelling. It looks really bad.
Sorry but jest bekawse we ain't too smart don't mean we kant vote for smart people. Itz jest good to know that in the midst of all this konfusion and kurruption, sumbody is keeping our noze to the spelling grindstone.
:o) Your Welcome!
I did not say or mean that smart people won't be good elected officials. I said that people that think they are so smart that they don't listen to anyone elses ideas because they believe that their ideas are the only ones that will work. They are not open or objective. We do not need another nut case. We have enough of those floating around in Rapides Parish governmental bodies right now. We need new, clean, educated, entergetic people that are willing to offer their expertise and time for the common good of all people. We need someone willing to clean up this mess. A lady has a real good handle on a broom and may be the answer for a clean sweep. Any ideas, guys?
I don't think the office of mayor is the key - under our charter the mayor is pretty insignificant. The council positions are the key to a turn-arround. I am told that Charles Smith is led arround by Myron Lawson. Myron lets him play boss and take blame. I think that Myron's seat is where the big pressure needs to be. His ambition and greed are the real moving forces in city decisions and Charles Smith gets to play boss and take all the heat. Kelvin Sanders & wife, Brigit Brown, Diedre Fuller, the Jackson Miss., the conflict at consulting firm, the England Authority - all Myron's stuff. Take a look at who pays Myron rent now and for the past several years. Like deep throat said: "follow the money">
Hmmmm.....very good points by the last contibutor. This place is sounding more and more like a bed of thieves!
Oops!!!!!!!!! contributor :o)
Where's Brigit lately? She's no where to be seen.
Brigit be under the weather - no details available.
Seems the rats are squeeling. Look for more scandle to mar Ned's administration soon. Payroll fraud, misplaced equipment, 1000's of gallons of fuel, slander and employees being threatened with doom if they don't toe the line. Why even payoff's from contractors! Oh No! Woe has befallen the mighty! Their cries fill the night! Let me sing now! I'll tell all if you'll just keep it quiet!
What a shame! All this corruption is costing you and me money. We pay more taxes than most cities, all to line their pockets. It is very sickening. Almost as sickening is the apathy that prevails in Alexandria. Nobody even cares that they are stealing from each of us. As it was written in one of the above comments, it is OUR fault. Until we decide to demand accountability, we will live in this filth.
Be encouraged. The mood of the community seems to be changing and I think your city government will continue to generate news that angers, confounds and upsets us. We shall soon see if Alexandrians have had enough.
Ah, the passion, the hope, the insight, the indignation, the determination, the desire: and still only about 15% of you white people will show up and vote.
Well folks........the last anonymous contributor just hit it on the head! If we would show up and vote, we could change a lot of things in this town. By the way....I heard that Delores Brewer is mulling running for the big seat.
I like Ms. Brewer OK but ain't that the bunch that go us into this spectacular shape?
I don't know that Delores has any influence with the City Council or any input as to their nonsensical decisions they have made. I don't think anyone could have any affect on Ned of late.
She is jointed at the hips with Ned and always has been. She controls him.
Dr. John Sams timing has never been one of his strong points. It would have been better for him to formally announce his candidacy for mayor AFTER Ned announces his intentions not to run. Ned will do this in Jan.
Also, he used the same wording in his advertisement in the Town Talk today as Mayor Fields did yesterday. It looked like he committed literary theft, plagiarizing Mr. Fields words. He needs to present himself as having new and original ideas if he expects us to believe him and to be a serious candidate with a plan for our future.
My questions have always been:
1. Has Sams learned from his former wars; &
2. Will he consider the thoughts and feelings of others?
I got my answer.
Very good questions. Let's observe very closely and see.
Perhaps I can give you some insight. Dr. Willam Frist introduces himself as Bill Frist. Dr. Howard Dean introduces himself as Howard Dean. John Sams introduces himself as Dr. Sams. Being a physician doesn't make him unqualified to lead politically but it also obviously doesn't prevent it. The first thing he has to shed is his obvious feeling and attitude of self-importance and superiority. But we shall see.
Tony Owens would mkae a great state rep for the area.
How do you know? His education, background, accomplishments, and occupation remain shrowded in secrecy.(see above) I do not believe Tony Owens is a serious contender - just a guy looking for an easy job.
Well a State Senator thought highly enough of Mr. Owens to back him in his last race. Thats good enough for me.
Did he win his last race?
Having the backing of a state senator can be a bad thing. What sets Mr. Owens above the great unwashed? Why should we vote for him? Simple questions that need simple answers.
My guess is that the answers on Owens might be simple but they ain't good. Can you imagine supporting a candidate that you are embarassed to discuss. He is insulting us.
Let's start slow. Did Tony Owens graduate from high school?
No he did not. He did however run ads claiming to be a graduate of Jena High School.
Nuff said! Thank you. Those unconditional endorsements must be from Mr. Owens or his mama. Give him the benefit of the doubt - maybe he had trouble reading the questions. He sounds like exactly what we need in Baton Rouge. You can count on my support Mr. Owens.
What about the Alexandria City Council races? Has anybody worthwhile expressed an interest in running. The mayor, whoever it is, is helpless without a decent council.
Excellent question. Did we get tired of kicking Mr. Stewart arround?
Ooops, sorry, I meant Mr. Owens - just watched "It's A Wonderful Life" with Jimmy Stewart, about another individual who, not unlike Mr. Owens, devoted his life to the community. Please forgive my error.
Well he almost beat an incumbent.
It occurs to me that this Owens "proponent" may very well be the opponent. Nobody could be as dense as this person portrays. And he/she has managed to piss of off by his/her lack of candor. Look out for dirty tricks.
Lack of education trumps lack of principle. Let's see who the opponent is. I agree. (However, there is nothing pleasant about having to choose between a moron and a creep)
Personally, I hope they re-elect the pervert. At least you know just how he stands: in front and bent over.
He comes from a good working class family, earned a GED, has worked hard and owns his own business. Plus he has never been caught with another man in a public restroom. He is not as bad as some make him sound.
"Never been caught in a public restroom with another man" - how can you pass up a creditial like that? You can count me in (if you can count)_.
My goodness. This blog could stand some lessons in civility. Why do we have to be so "nasty" to one another? Everyone is entitled to say what they believe and to promote those they support. But....I know we can get this done without such slurs and unkind remarks. We have no idea who we are referring to in most cases. Please....get a grip!
Your goodness??? Is that an issue we should be concerned with?? Or is it possible that should realize that political discourse can be passionate and heated. Perhaps you should "get a grip".
